A La Villa Des Artistes Hotel

My daughter and I stayed here for 8 nights over the Thanksgiving holiday. Our room was very small by American standards, as was the bathroom. We had to do some manuevering to figure out how to hop in and out of the bathtub without banging into anything. That is all of the negatives, however. My wife & I vstayed at the Villa Des Artistes in early October, 2005 - room 409. This was our first trip to Paris, celebrating our 25th anniversary. We booked the room directly via the Best Western web site after reading favorable reviews on TripAdvisor. My wife is particularly sensitive to cigarette smoke, and was encouraged by the "non-smoking rooms available" banner at the B.W. web site description of the hotel. Ah...Paris city of light and rose coloured light at that. I found this hotel on the internet and frankly, after hearing all the horror stories about Paris hotels (including a completely off base review of this hotel), I have to admit to be being a bit uneasy about what I would really find when I checked into the Villa Des Artistes for my dream weekend of solo bistro dining. My third trip to Paris and so far the best value hotel I have found. True it is a little out of the way but this is a plus. It is a quiet street within walking distance of most of the left bank attractions (esp. the peaceful Luxembourg gardens) as well as some interesting bonuses such as Mouffetard market (being close to the Sorbonne - this area had a cool "studenty" feel). I booked this hotel through expedia, actually I booked the whole 'vacation' through expedia, air and hotel together. I was wondering what I would find...a Best Western...some can be great, others not so much. But I really liked my stay there. It's relatively easy to get to from Charles de Gaulle. I read with concern the comments from the person who got overbooked. I booked through Best Western and had zero problems. I confirmed ahead of time through email with the hotel. My take on this hotel is that it is a jewel - and I actually stayed there as opposed to the person complaining about having got bumped. The staff was first rate and very helpful. On a quiet street between the Tour Montparnasse and the Luxembourg Gardens, we had a reasonably pleasant stay. With the exception of the receptionist who greeted us on arrival, the staff was pleasant and most helpful--the fashionable young lady we encountered first was not. We were early and our room wasn't ready so we had to store our luggage in an unlocked closet behind the front desk. I first found this hotel when I was in Paris on business several years ago. I traveled ahead of my wife and she was going to join me a few days after I arrived. I did not like the hotel that my company selected for me, so i set out to find a suitable alternative hotel for when my wife was to join me. I stayed in this hotel in Sep 2002. The hotel was very clean, nice size room and bathroom. The frontdesk was very helpful and english-speaking. Our rate didn't include breakfast, but we were able to get coffee from their breakfast room. Our only complaint would be its location. Even though it's next to luxumberg garden, we find it far from most main attractions. It took us about 45 min to walk to the seine river once, so we mostly traveled by metro to everywhere we went.
