the esmeralda appts are disgusting . wouldnt advise anyone to there for a holiday. 11 days me and my husband stopped and in that time had one sheet change, only because i went down to reception and said i would change them myself, same with the towels. but also had no air... more

Lovely hotel! Great bar and entertainment! from tinkerbellprincess69
I first visited the Esmerald apartments in summer 2002 and had a lovely stay. So when we decided to go back to Solou in 2006, we chose the same hotel again. The rooms are very large with kitchen, dining room, balcony and 2 bedrooms in our case. The cleanliness was good and the staff were all very nice and helpful and also mostly english. I found the entertainment and atmosphere in the hotel bar very good, which meant we could stay at the hotel most nights. One bad thing though, the pool was tiny! And there are very few sun loungers so you really do have to be quick. Sometimes when there was no room around the pool, we went to another hotel a little further along the road which had a huge pool and plenty of sunloungers. I'm not sure if we were allowed to just use their pool facilities but we did anyway! The Irish bar next door to the Esmeralda served great food, but unfortunatly not so good service. There is a little sports bar down a side street right next door to the Esmeralda that was fantastic and the English family that owned it were lovely. They also served nice food. It only took 2minutes to walk to the beach from the hotel which was great and also the bus stop to all other locations, inlcuding the Port Aventura park was directly opposite the hotel which was very convenient. The Port Aventura park by the way is fantastic too! Overall, a great holiday.

I booked this week long break as a cheap late deal self-catering holiday for my sister and I. It was advertised as a 3* property, close to the fishing village of Cambrils in the Salou region. After a short bus transfer from the local airport we arrived and found the apartments were in the middle of nowhere, with Salou being around a 15 minute bus journey away. The village of Cambrils, which was meant to be the nearest village was around a 1/2 hour bus journey away. The apartments themselves were very cramped and not the cleanest you would ever see. There was water dripping from the ceiling just outside our room, into a bucket! There was a really musty smell everywhere. The staff in the apartments were very unhelpful concerning local knowledge and as the holiday rep never appeared at our apartments, we had to find out our own information about the area in the few bars that were in the immediate area. The pool area was small and filthy with large wheelie bins all around it, which seemed to draw every mosquito in Spain to it, and the bar area. I ended up getting covered in bites. The only saving grace about this holiday was the beach, which was 5 minutes walk away. 2 sunbeds cost €7 per day, but they were worth it. I have went on loads of last-minute deals but this was definitely the worst one I have been unfortunate to go to and will NOT be going back again!

  • I would invest in a T10 bus card available from your local tabacconist. This provides 10 bus journeys and can be used by anyone in your party. Although you can walk to Salou/ Cambrils, in the heat it is much nicer to take an air conditioned bus! - by Susan
