The Butlins of the Canaries
The Dunas Mirador Hotel is the Butllins of the Canaries. It is an extremely busy hotel. The pool area is so packed that you can not get off your sun bed because they are so close together.Breakfast is a form of torture as you can not find anything the cereal is about a mile away from the milk etc. If you get to reception and you are put in block F be afraid very afraid some of the rooms are almost on a dual carriage way. Check this out carefully. Some rooms have nice pool views. There is noisy entertainment on the poolside. The staff are very rude. Do not expect to walk anywhere the hotel is at the top of a very busy road. On the plus side the food is very good especially in the evenings. The rooms are clean with regular maid service. The pools are spotless though the big one is freezing. Maspalomas is great very up market. Lots of lovely places to eat and drink and live music everywhere. Taxis are very cheap and easy to find in Maspalomas or outside the hotel.
Decent 3* Hotel
Got back the other day, and to be honest, it was a decent hotel, overall. Yes, ok, it mainly caters for the Germans, but the main aspects were spot on. It was clean, above all and the maid service was first rate. If you like to stay active, theres plenty to do throughout the day- from shooting, tennis and various pool side activities. The food was a mixed bag. One night they served excellent steaks, not too well done but another night it was rather bland fish. Typical 3* fare really. Although the staff gave it 100% effort in the evenings, the entertainment was, well, basic at best. Dont bother going half board either. We got drinks free anyway, the staff didnt always ask to see the wrist band. Besides, there were restrictions as to when and where you could have your drinks- too much hassle to be honest. DOnt bother with the buses either, a taxi is only 3.5 euros. If you want to party, then Playa De Ingles is a pretty cheap night out (2 for 1 and usually a free cocktail of some type.) Just dont go there expecting a 5* service hotel- it isn't. However it IS one of the best 3* hotels I've stayed at.
Does exactly what it says on the tin!
We've had a fab week! Travelodge style rooms that were very clean and the maids were brill! We asked to move from rear of F block to a room with a pool view. No problem.....moved the day after. We couldn't fault the staff, we smiled and they smiled back, when we needed help with something they always provided helpful information. Saw other guests be very abrupt with staff though and the response was more chilly! Pools are fantastic, sunbeds plentiful, scrubbed regularly and all in excellent condition. (not like those on beaches!) Food typical for hotel buffet style- was fine but hopeless for veggies. We were happy to eat fish every night (cooked freshly on griddle in front of us on three night out of seven) but if you need true veggie food there were some nights where green leaves and tomatoes would have been the limit. Breakfast had wide choice of breads and pastries (along with meats and cheeses etc) and everyone helped themselves to fruit to last the day. All inclusive didn't seem worth the extra. We were half board and there is a supermarket just round the corner where G&T and wine supplies can be bought cheaply. Big bags of ice cubes were a euro! We sat on balcony making our own or took down supplies in plastic bottles if we sat by the pool. Hotel is a few km's inland from the coast - which increasingly we felt was an advantage. If you want the high life of Playa des Ingles then this hotel isn't for you. The free hotel bus is fine.....but you need sharp elbows to protect your ribs. There is absolutely no order to who gets on and I'm afraid the pensioners were very experienced shovers! Yes, we got injured but we did then work out a walking route to the beach which was really good. (about 40 min stroll) Local buses and taxis are so cheap the free bus is not worth the effort or pain to save 2 or 3 euros! Same with journeys further afield. Local buses are really cheap and easy to use to go to Las Palmas or Mogan. Would we go back - yes for the type of chilling out week we wanted.....and for the really corny hotel entertainment provided by the animation team! What a laugh!
It is what it is
After reading reviews on this hotel i was little aprehensive before our trip. However we decided to go with an open mind and make our own mind up. Our flight was delayed for 4 hours so we didn't arive at the hotel untill about 8:00am, the flight delay was not the hotels fault but on arrival our room wasn't ready and the receptionist was very rude and told us to go away untill 11:00. Tired, emotional, and hungrey we did! After reading a trip adviser review we knew we wanted to stay in block A with a pool view. We mentioned this to another receptionist who was slightly more helpfull. We were pointed in the direction of the restaurant. This was not appealing at first as there was a smell of sewage in parts and we decided that we couldn't stay in there! We went for a walk along the rd and found a nice cafe/bar, which was clean! We were pointed in the direction of our room, it was large, spacious and immaculate, with sea and pool views. The balcony was huge. After a few hours sleep everything seemed better! Overall the staff were rude, they found it difficult to break a smile! The all inclusive deal that we were on was probably the worst all inclusive ever! The food was not good. You can only eat at certain times and the drinks are of poor quality! We managed to have a great time time still, we just didn't take advantage of the all inclusive. We went to Maspolomas at night and found nice restaurants/bars. The pool is clean with plenty of sun beds, the water is a bit chilly though, but it was January!! True the hotel is mainly German and other foreigners stay here but you are in a foreign country this didn't bother us at all. The one thing that let the hotel down on the whole was the Staff. (Apart from the chamber maids they are top class) We used the hotel as a base. The bus service they provide is efficient. I wouldn't stay here again but overall we did have an enjoyable stay! You get over the grumpy staff, the smelly restaurant (just the right side!!) and you even learn to enjoy Bacardi called "Trinidad", by the end of the week you look forward to your gyn and lemonade (as there is no Tonic!!!!!!!)
Brilliant seriously could'nt fault it!!
When I read the reviews below, I was lets say alittle concerned, however it was booked and we went for new year from 30th Dec 2006 - 7th Jan 2007 (1 week), Now having read some of the other reviews maybe, just maybe, the hotel has cleaned up its act? however I found it so much better that a three star hotel and would have no problen rating it at least a 4*, I have a 3 1/2 year old son and we all loved it. The food was absolutley fantastic different every single night they even had a chef prepering fillet steak, or carving meat off the bone (every meat you could think of!) or fish, there was so much choice even if you are the fussiest of eaters you would not go hungry, vegiterian delights was also abundant, along with what we all like - the traditional meals! The rooms were cleaned every day and towels changed when you read the sign in the bathroom it clearly states that if you require clean towels put you dirty ones in the bath and they will exchange them. I see NO cockroaches at all (I have only one phobia cockroaches!! and its serious but I honestly see none!) one of the reviews below a negative one stated a fly problem??? I did see flies but definalty NOT on the food! and their certainly wasnt a problem. the staff were friendly and happy, entertainment good (the kiddies disco was fun) Their were mainly Dutchland, Belgians and French people there although this wasn't a problem (no towels are allowed to be put on the loungers until after 9:00am there are so many that this wasn't a problem (although the sun only hit one side so you can tell this as everyone was on one side). If I had to state somthing negative truly there was only one, which was, the biggest pool was fresh water - therefore very very cold, having said that dont forget we were there during the colder season (although still hit 24c) but there is another pool with a slide going into it which is big enough that was heated. My husband and I have decided that we definalty will be returning the same time next year!! - definatley go to the Maspalomas Sand Dunes (via the free bus outside the hotel) - great fun for all the family running and jumping off them - people see me and my family jumping off them and we started a trend - no matter how old they were!! I felt I had to write this review in defence of this hotel as it does seem all abit unfair - human nature always writes the negative.
Full details Great pleace to stay!!
DUNAS MIRADOR MASPALOMAS Stay 4th – 11th December 2006 I was a little unsure after reading the other reviews on the Internet as to what we should expect, and on my return decided to give you a clear and honest opinion. People commented negatively on staff attitudes – I found the staff accommodating and helpful, almost everyone spoke a little English. You have to remember these people work hard and they are busy, and as with everywhere, you may come across some one who’s having a problematic or bad day, give them some grace. Give a smile and be generous with your “hellos” and you’ll reap the rewards of enjoying your stay all the more. Food - I was astounded at the choice, of course their never going to please everyone, but the quality of the meat and fresh ingredients was fantastic. Breakfast ranged from 10 types of bread (including donuts and custard filled croissants to warm rolls and French sticks). There were 4 types of cold meats, cheeses, yoghurts, and fresh fruit. Lots of types of fruit juice, coffee and tea, milk (incl choc milk) 4 types of cereal, jams and honey. On the Hot side – they have egg (fried or scrambled,) Bacon and sausage, and boiled eggs. This is the only element that’s not too nice. The bacon is part cooked, and fatty with bone in and the sausages strictly continental (hot dog style). But this is the only fault Lunch was a fantastic spread of salads and meats hot and cold – hot dishes, pasta, rice and chicken bites. Loads of stuff … The evening meal was even better with juicy beef stakes (twice a week) roast beef, chicken – fresh fish, pasta, salads, different potatoes and veg galore, and then if you have any room, pudding!! Accommodation – the rooms were cleaned 5 times a week (and they did a fantastic job!), fresh towels, sheets changed weekly (more if you want). The rooms were big and spacious and recommend a room with the pool view (A block was good). The adjoining bathroom again clean and spacious with bath / show (showers were lovely and warm and quite powerful). Watch out for slippy floors! There were 2 chairs and a table inside and the same outside on the balcony. There is a TV, which had BBC World News and CNN on in English. Bedside draws – large wardrobe complete with coat hangers. Plenty of plugs should you take an adapter. Pool – so clean! The poolside was scrubbed every other day, and a team of cleaners when into all general areas cleaning as they went. The cleaning staff was enormous! It was warm and large! There were lots of poolside spaces and lounges with shade if you required any. I do realise we went during a quiet period before the kids knocked off for school holidays. Highly recommend the beginning of December. The bar was good fun – but not to busy – lots to choose from re the all-inclusive. Do go to Palamos Park (Zoo) it was fantastic! Get a car if you fancy. We did – well worth the £77 for 7 days.. Don’t expect 5 star… expect 3 and be pleasantly surprised!! You’ll have a good time here I’m sure – we did, but then we went with few expectations and a bag full of smiles.
good hotel not so good food
Have just returned from the dunas mirador on monday and had a vey nice holiday in a very nice clean hotel , the pool area was very well maintained as were the rooms, the pool bar was clean , thats where you have to drink your fully inclusive drinks, and only to 10.30 pm . Then there is the option of going down to the disco where the animation team takes over and i must say they do a good job. They do need to try and bring in some good decent entertainment , i mean apart from themselves , some good singers or comedy shows more often as the place is dead after the inclusive stops, and mabie let the fully inclusive go on untill 12 instead of 10.30. The animation team got hold of a singer that was on holiday at the time and he was fantastic , he came in and did some songs and managed to keep some more people in the place , that was the best night . NOW to the restaraunt and the food. The food was cold and not very nice , they never had a good selection and found we had to eat out a lot as it was the same old rubbish nearly every night , which defeats the purpose of going fully inclusive . The restaraunt was smelly and always full of fly's , they were even trying to swim in the beans and on all the food which was really horrible. The hotel caters for all nationalities , especially the germans , but that is no problem as it is very funny watching them trying to get to the sun beds before you , and also like to push there way into the bar in front of you , they do stare at you a bit when they here your accent , but i find it very funny. The hotel is very nice and clean apart from the smell in the restaraunt and the fly problem they have. It was also a bit out the way from the sea front , approx 3 miles . There are no other pubs around apart from a german one . There is a fantastic chinese restaraunt next door , try it.. We had a good holiday at the mirador, but they need to do something with the food . f&c from uk
Worth a stay!
We have just returned from a week staying in this hotel. I must say after reading some of the reviews we were a bit nervous about going. The hotel was nice and clean, rooms pretty much standard, if possible book a room with a pool view as they are definitely the best choice. The food was generally good this was one of our concerns, there was a toaster at breakfast which we weren’t expecting, the bacon was cold but we just didn't eat it, as you could always find something else to eat which would fill you up until lunch, the lunches were nice with steak on the menu one afternoon, at lunchtime there is the option of eating outdoors at the pool bar, sit at one of the tables and a member of staff will come round and take your order its that easy, evening meals were good to and there were always plenty on offer, due to flight times we missed the first evening meal but thoughtful staff had a cold meal and dessert made up in the dining hall for us on arrival. It was mostly Germans and Spanish staying at the hotel so staff do favour these languages and as a result it is harder to communicate and try and work out where to go at meal times etc., staff was another cause for concern for us before going because of some of the reviews, but I must say that the staff did do their best to understand and help, well most did! There were the odd sour members that you can get anywhere but they were out numbered honestly. Entertainment carries on throughout the day and night, they do try hard, Mr Kalid on animation is very nice indeed and really pleasant and thoughtful with the youngsters, we only went to one evening entertainment show but it was good. The All Inclusive was good the food, ice creams, water, and drinks were all fine but you could only get two alcoholic drinks at one time, so if your party is larger than two prepare to queue more, or send more than one person to the bar at a time, this does cause quite long bar queues but they do go down reasonably quickly and remember the All Inclusive stops at 10.30pm which I think is a bit to early! 12 o'clock would have been a much more reasonable time to stop, this was probably one of the most annoying things about this hotel along with the sunbed situation, (well I did say there were a lot of Germans at the hotel) the pool area was very nice and cleaned every morning, you were not permitted to enter the pool area until 9.00am, there were queues every morning at all five entrances to the pool area with mostly Germans heading the queues loaded with their towels, when the pool area opened it was a run to the sunbeds and the Germans would be flinging their towels down like a deck of cards so be quick, there were at least two arguments in the week we were there regarding this, on the upside there are always the turnaround days when this problem eases slightly. The hotel is slightly out of the way but near enough to move around by taxi and of course there is a courtesy bus which runs from the hotel to Playa Del Ingles beach, there is also a shopping centre in the town of Playa Del Ingles if you like to shop, so location is not a problem. We were very lucky that we met two very nice couples, this was the key to our holiday being so good, we got on well and had a lovely time together, laughing the nights away at the bar round the corner from the hotel (well as the All Inclusive stopped at 10.30pm it just didn’t seem right to pay at the hotel for what you got as part of your deal during the day, so we went out when the All Inclusive stopped), it would have been slightly lonely at the hotel for us as a couple and for our daughter had we not had such good company, so if possible take your own company or try and make friends early on in your stay.
never again
i stayed at the mirador 4years ago and returned with a friend last week the hotel and food was very good as it was 4years ago but staff were very unfriendly nothing catered for british people even resturant times were not printed in english we were made to feel very much unwanted not one member of staff were friendly and no we are not noisey louts just two 50 year olds looking for a fun holliday to relax and unwind wont be going back again pity as hotel itself is top class
Great Hotel
Me my boyfriend and 6 friends stayed at the Mirador as a cheap 2 weeks group holiday, we all had a great time. The Hotel room are standard but always cleaned 5 out of 7 days. The food was great at lunch time you can eat around the pool bar or inside, all the food was great for any age group. The staff are very nice and most of them willing to help you all the time. The Pool Bar stuff are very nice and always joking about with all the customs all inclusive customs can only drink at the pool bar. Which may be a problem in the rain or colder weather, but for the summer and any hot night its very nice to sit there. The swimming pool was always clean and is heated most of the time, the only problem was the sun beds are all taken up by 9.00 so if you are having a pool day make sure you get up early as by the time breakfast has ended there will be nothing left. The area is abit poor as you are up the top of a big hill, there are afew shops around the corner from the hotel but to get anywhere i.e. clubs, pubs shopping centres/markets and the beach you will need to get a taxi now its was so cheap the taxi prices start at €1.90 and all of those places wont cost a large amount to get there to get to the maspalomas beach it was €2.10 each way. there is a english bar and fun fair (holiday world) down the road which was about €2.00. At night it starts at €2.40. This was a very cheap holiday and enjoyed being in this hotel.
