My father and I spent 2 weeks in village royal and had a great time the rooms are clean and the staff are very friendly.
Although the hotel is a short taxi ride from town this gives a good feeling of space and tranquility. The pool area and restaurant are brilliant. My only advice to anybody going is take your own pillow.
Village royal is a great place and we plan to go back ASAP
Happy travels

I went to Goa for the first time in January, bearing in mind that I had never flown and never been abroad it was extremely scary.
I had no expectations about what I would get so I suppose that was my luck. When I arrived at the Village Royale after the flight from hell I was pleased.
My room was clean and tidy, the people were very friendly and would get you anything you wanted. Yes I gave them a tip but considering their wages, what is it to give them the equivalent of 50p.
The extra's of a tailor, jewels and massage and luggage stalls made it all the more appealing. The Stall holders would do anything that you ask and yes it may have cost a few rupees more but hey still a quarter of the price we would pay at home.
The food was good and cooked well, and the taxis were cheap. I actually got a taxi driver for the whole two weeks and he looked after us well.
So will I be going again? Yes I will. I have already been again in March and am going back again in Jan 2007. You not only get what you pay for but you also get what you give.
Remember it is a third world country and don't take anything for granted.

We stayed for only one night; this was because we arrived at 10pm.
The village royal is bad, small and dirty rooms. Out of all the places in north Goa this is the worst I have seen, stay away, for £10 a night its worth moving in to a nice hotel and use the package just for the flight out there!
The hotel is miles from the town and you have to use a taxi all the time.

Having travelled all over the world my wife and I have come to expect lower standards than we take for granted at home, but nothing could have prepared us for this appaling hotel, we moved out after the first day and found an excellent small B&B which cost less than one third that of this hotel which was/is more like a prison camp.
I must agree with all the comments about the staff who where freindly but badly led.
We will be back to Goa many times but will never entertain the thought of this hotel again.

I am a frequent visitor to Goa, and have stayed in various hotels including the Nizmar, park Avenue, Osborne, and various guest houses.
What you get at the Village Royal, is what you pay for. It is a cheap two star hotel, in price and accommodation standards only.
I have stayed at the hotel twice, and whilst it is a short distance from the main resort, it can at times be peaceful.
The rooms are basic but clean, if you are not happy with the ground floor rooms ask to be relocated to an upper floor, it can make the difference.
The food is good, and as others have said, breakfast is basic, but that is the standard in all two star hotels.
The staff are friendly and good at their job, need anything done, just ask, and you will get it done, at a price off course.
The main issue with this hotel, is that you should be fit to get the most enjoyment from this venue, it is NOT for those with mobility issues, unless you are happy to take a taxi everywhere.
Speaking about taxis, the men who ply by the stand outside the hotel, are on the whole ok, but one or two are aggressive and rude. I get round this by getting my driver from Calangute, to pick me up from the shop 50 metres from the hotel entrance. Also remember that prices for petrol in India, are just as affected by price as they are in the UK.
I will be back this year staying for three months, whilst I sort residency issues out with the local authorities.
If you want a cheap friendly hotel, good food, and where you can get good exercise walking into town, then this is the hotel for you, if you want five star star treatment, then maybe you should try somewhere else.

After reading the three hotel reviews that were available before we traveled to this hotel we were sure that we were in for a bad experience! However when we arrived at the village royal we were pleasantly surprised to find that it was nothing like the reviews had stated! The rooms were clean the pool was clean and the staff were really friendly!
I had one of the best holidays of my life whilst staying here and if you go prepared for what India is like to holiday in then it will be exactly as you expect for the price you pay to stay here. If you want a luxurious room with a sauna and Jacuzzi then stay in the Hilton and pay the Hilton prices! If not and you are just using your room as a base and a place to sleep then this hotel is perfect.
My overall comment is that this hotel was perfect for the type of holiday we wanted the only criticism was that it was a little out of the way of everything in the resort but that could be seen as a positive if you are looking for a place away from the hustle and bustle of the resort centre!

Loved it.
Best value for money package holiday I have ever had.
You must remember it is 2 star accommodation in India. Basic but clean.
The staff are excellent, fun and a great help. Just don't use the tailor on the grounds of the hotel. He is poor. We will be back next year. Other reviews I have read were by people who obviously don't travel much. They should stick to Benidorm.
Remember the staff earn less than £1 a day so treat them well. They are stars.
Just get into the sprit of the place, don't expect 5 star rooms .Enjoy the people, especially the taxis and go explore the place.
I did prefer Candolim to Calangute (a bit calmer) and it's still only 70 rupees to either one or you can walk in 20 minutes.
Floyd's in Candolim is great for Lobster/Crab. You must order 24 hours in advance and it sells imported wine (buy one get one free).
The highlights were the people, washing the Elephants, traveling through the country in a taxis (£12 for a whole day) and Turtle beach.
You will see poverty and illness but also a beautiful country and different culture.

I was in the Village Royal for two weeks at the beginning of March. I loved the people there, the waiters and cleaners could not do enough for you.
It was my first visit to Goa and I would definitely go back and stay at that hotel as well.
Yes it was basic and 20 min walk out of town but the rooms were cleaned on a daily basis, towels and beds changed every day and taxis are cheap to get about in.
It is what people make of the situation. Me and my family had a brilliant holiday and would have no doubts about going back.
As for the Rep's (Jewel in the Crown) had very professional reps in this hotel and a round resort. Karen had the hotel running perfectly.

We arrived at the Village Royal to be greeted with people saying welcome to Alcatraz and it realy was Alcatraz.
We checked in & was taken to our rooms in block I ON THE SECOND FLOOR, we reqested a ground floor. So we waited for the rep to come at 5p.m. She had only been in Goa 3weeks but only started repping the Monday 5 feb 06. She told us not to go out at nigth as it was'nt safe that is untrue becouse we have been to Goa before.
The rooms were dirty bedding was damp. Sink in room ad no running water or taps. Bathroom had a shower with a socket about 30cm away. Flies & mozzies all over the walls. Swimming pool with muck at the bottom & around the sides.
Over all it was a discrace. Would not ever go back to the Village Royal. Moved out the same day we got there.

We have had 3 weeks at this hotel I was not told it was not for people with walking difficulties. Our room was on 1st floor no hand rail and 3 sets of stairs.
The bed was hard, the shower room was unsafe, the water went all over the floor, no hand rails and do not touch the switches with wet hands.
The room was not to clean the beds put clean every other day green soap was left for us to use, I did so and soap was left in sink for 3 weeks. While we were there 1 lady tried to use the tap in the kitchen area and got electric shock so she went in the shower with flip flops on.
The food was quite good we went b+b toast(2) rounds tea or coffee any thing else you had to pay for we had to pay£25 for a fridge for 3 weeks we never did any trips out because of too much walking.
2 days be for we left I went online and found this is not for people with walking difficulties.

The first thing that you have to remember is that you are in India and once you get over the culture shock then you are on your way.
The Village Royal is basic to say the least but you are in India, the beds are a wooden board which on top lays a 2 inch mattress, so watch out for that bad back but they do offer a massage on site and the business was good.
Breakfast is included in the price of the stay providing you are prepared to have either 2 slices of toast or a bread roll with bread and jam "this counts as continental" however there is ample tea and cheap powdered coffee available, you can if you wish order from the menu for a full breakfast or what ever you fancy but you will be charged for this.
Rooms are basic bed, 2 chairs, wardrobe, fridge, bedside locker, and table with a mirror, mine was in block D which meant that I was subject to all the noise from the entertainments area which also includes the bar, which is open till midnight. The bathroom consisted of a shower, toilet and sink. DO NOT TOUCH THE SWITCHES WITH WET HANDS, as the wiring is not up to standard.
Be prepared if you go to the toilet in the night as there may not be any water as it gets turned off. Power cuts are another factor of the Village Royal we had at least 1 every night and 1 night had 4. Taxi drivers wait outside to take you to the beach, which is about 2k away, but they will charge you anything from 70 to 100 rupees but if they were to stick to the tariff on their cabs this should be no more the 40 rupees.
Don't go on day trips with them as they are in cahoots with the traders wherever they take you and charge you tourist prices for everything of which they get a cut. The staff at the village royal are friendly and I am sure that they will get it right but not for a while, the rooms get tidied by the male cleaners but not cleaned, I left a cashew nut on the floor and it took 8 days before it was swept up. You can walk to the beach but it is a chore and you do have to go over a dirt track to get there.
Would I go back to the Village Royal? No. Would I go back to Goa? yes every other year as I go to Cuba when I don't go to Goa. Goa, great place, great people, great sunshine, great value for money and well worth a visit.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at village royal. I have previously been been to India 4 times and I have to say this was my best time.
The hotel was clean and the staff were extremely friendly. I was very sad to leave and I will be traveling back there very shortly.
