Before i went 2 Goa for my first time, i read a few comments and was quite terrified about the Village Royal Hotel .
But when i got there, i could have laughed at the pathetic comments .
It was VERY basic , i do agree. But nothing that you cant live with. I thought the room was clean, looked after, and the staff change your beds and towels when YOU give them your key at reception, even if you gave it in every day, they would change ur linen for you. I took my own pillow and towel after reading the comments, found i didnt NEED a pillow, yes a towel.
The shower did go cold a few times, but the majority of the time it was warm. If there were any problems, we would just let reception know and it would be sorted ASAP.
Altogether, seven of us went, three rooms, and only one room had the most problems, but they couldnt have tried any harder to help us.
There was no dodgey smell, because put it this way, you have to buy those inscent stick things to keep the mozzies away anyway.
The balcony was fine, a nice place to relax.
We didnt spend much of our time round the pool because we found the best place to go to, nice and cheap was Bobby's Shack on Calangute Beach . Which is only 100Rupees in a taxi .
Yes the breakfast is only toast and tea or coffee, but there is no struggle to look through the menu and spend a coupple of pennies on a full-english. Some people are being to picky with such a hard working country.
I have never met such friendly, healpful people in my life .
And i will definately visit again . Even to Village Royal .

This Hotel was awful! Where do I start? It stunk of damp as soon as we got in there. We had an old fridge dumped outside our door with dirty clothes in it! No balcony didn’t have a warm shower the whole time we were there! No fridge, but my boyfriends mum and dad had one as standard, the manager said we would have to pay 100rs a day if we wanted one. The bathroom and general room was dirty. The bed was made out of ply wood and the pillows were yellow.
I’ve been to Goa a few times and have never had anything like this before. In the hotels defence my boyfriend’s family did have better rooms than mine, I must have got a bad one!
But also there was no atmosphere there! Overall very basic and doesn’t get you in the holiday spirit!
I you have already booked this hotel, refuse room F1 EW!

I’m going to try and be as fair as possible whilst writing this report. On arriving at our apartments after a long uncomfortable flight with MyTravel, I could not believe what I was seeing - it looks nothing like the pictures, please believe me went I say the place was awful, it needs a total refurbishment.
We had to climb 54 steps up a stairwell which stank like an NCP car park. Our room was for three of us. It had a ceiling fan, three hard single beds, no room to put clothes, the room was grubby and dirty. I could have cried. I consider myself well travelled, I have stayed in many basic accommodation resorts and always found them to be well maintained and clean.
This resort needs a good shake up. We asked the rep to move us, she said this was not possible, we were staying for three weeks, I could not stand to stay in this resort. We found a guesthouse in Candolim called Horizonview which was clean and friendly. We had to part with £500 of our spending money to pay for it, but it was worth it just to get out of there. I could go on and on but I hope you get the message.

This was our first time in Goa and we loved every minute of it! We are a couple in our 20s and went to get married there so our family met us out there. It is a fab place, can't wait to go back!
It really bugs me reading all the bad reviews about this hotel. Those people obviously forgot where they were... in a third world country!!!
If you want a posh hotel and luxuries don't come to Goa.
The hotel was exactly how it was described to us when booking. It is very basic but when going to a place like Goa why would you need a posh room to just sleep in? If you want a holiday to just stay in the hotel, again don't go to Goa, there is so much to see and do, you'd be daft just staying in your hotel (unless you get Delhi belly!)!
The staff at the hotel are very friendly and will do anything to help. We had our breakfast there every morning we were there, you get a little glass of juice and some toast with butter and jam included in the bed and breakfast package, if you want extra you have to pay but it's so cheap it doesn’t matter.
For example a cheese omelette was something like 60p so why people moan about that is beyond me! We only ate there twice, on the first and last night, the food was fantastic and very cheap for a hotel. On our last night we were trying to spend the last of our rupees, on our bill there was 2 omelettes, 4 soft drinks, 2 waters, 9 beers, 2 Bacardi breezers, 2 curries, 2 rice and 1 naan bread and it came to just over £10 (810 rupees), the only bad thing about that was it didn't get rid of our rupees!!
The only down side (and it's only a little one) is the location of the hotel but taxis are available everywhere and they are so so cheap it didn't really matter to us! Plus how they drive is an experience!!!
We didn't stay in very much, we went to Palolem, South Goa to get married, stayed there 3 nights 4 days came back up North then once our family went home we went back down South to a place called Cola Beach for one night, both of which I would definitely recommend visiting. It took just over 2 hours to get to Palolem by taxi and it cost £20 return in a taxi!!!
I am definitely going back to Goa and if this hotel is available again for such a good offer I will definitely go back.
So stop moaning and just remember where you are and appreciate the life you have!!!

This was the third time this year that I have stayed here! If you want a cheap holiday this is ideal -the rooms are very basic, but on every occasion mine was always clean and kept so throughout my stay.
I spent a total of 6 weeks here (3 visits) and the staff were brilliant, they couldn't do enough for us. The amenities are ok-the pool was cleaned every morning-I know because I was up early every day.
The food was great-no delhi belly! The tailor's was a little more expensive than outside tailors but what do you expect? Everything I had made was good quality and sal-lui will pass the time of day with you without obligation (if he has time).
I will return in Jan 08 for sure! Just don't expect the Ritz for the "peanuts" paid.

We loved our stay at this hotel. We had visited Goa for the first time and we all cried when it was time to leave.
The hotel is very basic but then we are used to far too much luxury back in the UK. The staff were very friendly and always polite.
The room’s clean but very basic (if you want the Ritz then Goa is not for you). Our rooms were cleaned daily and to perfection!
The food at this hotel was out of this world I tried some amazing dishes.
Also a lovely big swimming pool and great entertainment a few times a week. In particular we enjoyed karaoke night.
The only negative things I can say is that we had a couple of power cuts in the hotel but then that is beyond anyone’s control and on a couple of occasions we were given someone else’s food bill. We managed to sort this out and the staff were very sorry!
I would recommend this hotel to anyone and I will be back with my family again very soon!

The hotel is exactly as described, very basic We had a good room boy, Sachin, who prided himself in doing his job properly, food great and really cheap.
The two problems we encountered were the location of the hotel, a good 45 min walk to the beach. Calengute awfully busy, much prefer Baga, but the other problem was the majority of the english people staying in the hotel, all rough as old boots, very cheap end of the market. I am amazed anybody books a cheap holiday to Goa, and expects luxury, it's rough and ready.

We were supposed to stay in this...

Dec 2007, Miss L Hogg

We were supposed to stay in this hotel for 2 weeks at the beginning of Dec, but when we got there the rooms were so bad we ended up checking out 1 week early and finding alternative accommodation for £10 a night which was 100 times better then the Village Royale.

Firstly we were told our rooms would have a T.V, fridge and safety deposit box, however this was not true. The rooms literally have a bed, shower, toilet and a dirty wardrobe in them. For the week we stayed there we had no choice but to live out of our suitcases. The towels didn't get changed often but when they did, they still looked dirty with stains on them and it was like getting dried with sand paper as they were so rough. Also the cleaners only made the beds they never changed the sheets while we were there.
There were loads of dead flies and ants in the bathroom and around the sink, it was disgusting! The fan that was on the ceiling was so noisy it sounded like it was going to fall off.
When we went down for breakfast all we ever got was a small glass of orange juice, the food we got we always got charged for.
The hotel is quite far out of the way of the main part as well, you have to get taxis everywhere. When we checked out and complained to reception, they were not bothered one bit, the service was unbelievably crap! I would love to know why this hotel is rated as a 2* because to what I saw it shouldn't have a star rating at all, it’s so bad. Also the reviews that I saw before I went away are so misleading as well. I could go on for ages about how dirty this place is.
I would definitely not recommend this place to anybody even if you were getting a great deal....if you come here I swear you will definitely regret it !

Rooms are very basic! No loo roll when we arrived-go prepared. We had to ask continuously for 4 days before getting our rooms cleaned, even that was done as we waited in reception-as it still had not been cleaned when we arrived in the evening!
When the room was eventually cleaned we were left with dirty towels!! Rooms only have ceiling fan and you are advised not to open windows-because of mosquitoes! So can get hot!!
We had a view of a shanty house and I saw a man openly urinate behind a room! Also heard of money going missing from peoples rooms. Saw police called there twice in our stay.
Security guards often leave keys unattended-don’t leave them with reception unless you have to.
'Continental breakfast' consists of toast and tea or coffee!
I certainly would not recommend this place unless you just want a hot room and a hard bed and poor hotel management.
I’ve travelled all over the world and never been so disappointed with a 'hotel' more like guest house!

Nov 2007, Miss R Jezikova

We read a few reviews about this hotel before we booked the holiday, so we knew not to expect too much.
Although the staff were really polite, there is just no standard to the services. If you leave a key at the reception in the morning, they are happy to clean the room. Although they just sweep up the floor and rearrange the towels. The sheets were changed once a week, the towels every other day, the shower floor will be washed, but don’t expect to have the sink cleaned or the tables dusted.
The kitchen has a sink but there are no taps, so in fact it’s just a waste of space. There was no fridge in the room. Every time we had a shower the electrics went off in the room, so we had to go to the reception to ask them to sort out the switches.
The fan in the room is very old, rusty and loud. It sounds like a helicopter is landing in your room. Earplugs are a ‘must have’.
The breakfast was a small glass (almost like a shot glass) of concentrated juice and two pieces of toast, which tasted like cardboard.
The food was ok as long as you’ve ordered something from the Indian cuisine. We had a few bad meals there, but we didn’t mind paying for it as it is very cheap, and we felt sorry for the staff.
Overall, I have noticed that people say ‘ you get what you’ve paid for’ but I think that in this case it more like ‘you’ve paid far too much for what you’ve got’ considering the fact that for the same money you’d get something much better down the road.

Basic 2 star hotel but what this hotel lacks in stars the staff make up, they are a great set of lads who cannot do enough for you.
We were at this hotel for xmas and new year and it was the best entertainment we’ve had in all the years we’ve been going, at the end of the night 4 am one or two people got thrown in the pool, then all of a sudden everyone was in even waiters room boys and one of the duty managers it was brill.
And we went back in April just for a week and were going back xmas again 92 days to go Goa.

Me and my partner visited Goa for the first time in March.
We was very worried about the comments and reviews we had read, but we can assure you on our first visit to Goa, our first visit to India, we could of not have asked to be in a better hotel than the Village Royale.
The location was a little bit out but about 50 rup in a taxi to Calangute centre which was not a problem.
The rooms were basic but clean with the bedding changed regularly. The staff could not do enough for you and the food was excellent.
We now will never go anywhere in Europe for our holidays, we fell in love with India and next year will be returning to India and staying at the Village Royale.
