I'm going back to this hotel in xmas 2008, yes the rooms were basic but they were clean. The hotel staff were very friendly and polite and the food was excellent. People going to goa have to respect the fact that it is a third world country and not to expect the luxuries that we have in England.
I have been to 3 hotels in this area and they are all of the same standards.
The comments that I have heard about this hotel are over exaggerated, and I think people should give it a chance as I have been very pleased with the value for money.

Warning....
This is simply the worst hotel we have ever seen. We stayed for 30 minutes before seeking another hotel that was actually in Calangute. This one is about 9 miles from the beach!
What's wrong with it:
1) Filthy
2) Dangerous electrics
3) Poor security
4) Naked guests rampaging around the grounds.
Fair enough, these were mindless english idiots, but security were doning nothing about it.
This hotel is truly horrendous. We are seasoned travellers and this wasn't our first time in basic Goan accomodation. There is no excuse for poor standards of cleanliness. The walls were covered in mould and the stentch was unbearable.
We paid to move to another hotel (The Mira) which was basic, but brilliant and 5 star compared to this dump.
Direct Holidays are also culpable, they didn't care about our complaint and in my view no self respecting holiday company should have this place on their books. Never mind quoting 2 stars for heavens sake!
Go to the Mira, a brilliant little hotel and it's cheaper!
I'd recommend Goa to anyone but choose your hotel very carefully.

The Village Royal . ? . . . Well Appart From It Being Really Far Out It was a OK Hotel. I Stayed In The Hotel For 3 Weeks And On The First Day We Arrived At 6am And Checked Straight Into Our Rooms. They Were Clean And We Had Hot Water A Tap In The Kitchen Are And A Rather Large Wardrobe. We Then Upgraded Our Room To A Better One Which Actually Turned Out Worse Appart From Haveing A Bigger Wardrobe And A Fridge (Which We Diddnt Use). Although We Never Really Stayed In The Room Because We Spent All Our Day At The Beach The Room Was JUst Depressing. It Had No Tap In The Kitchen Just A Pipe Off The Wall, No Hot water (3 Weeks Washing In The COLD) and The Sheets Were Hardly ever Cleaned We Always Had To Ask When We Were On Our was Out For The Night. The Atmosphere Always Was Nice Arround The Pool Are And The Seating Are And The Staff Are Welcoming. I Just Hated Being So Far Out And Away From Everything.

Went to Goa for the very first time, we were all looking forward to crashing out and having a bit of a sleep until I walked into this hell hole. It stunk of damp, no taps on the wall the shower was - god knows what it was!! Absolutely dreadful, smelly bedlinen, smelly dirty towels, rock hard beds, cold in the rooms and I checked out just as quick as I checked in. I was with a wedding party of around 36 people and they were just as disgusted, but there was no way this place was suitable for my husband, myself and my 3 daughters. Even though we were about 5 minutes away by cab, we spent more time at the VILE ROYALE resort because family and friends were there, we ate there one day and my 4 year old daughter asked for a ham sandwich and got a big black dirty fly in half of it, I pointed this out to the waiter who smiled, shrugged his shoulders with no offer of a replacement or refund. What a joke! DONT EVEN GO THERE!!!!!!

Village Royale is fab!
Yeah its basic, yeah its not even clean! But remember this is budget accommodation in a developing country. The atmosphere is FUN!! The staff are lovely! If you want your hotel to be like home then why not stay at home? The food is excellent, the hospitality second to none! Take along a couple of jay cloths and a bottle of toilet duck. Buy a bedspread off a market stall and you will be perfectly comfortable. We will most defintely be back and so will just about everyone else we met.

The worst hotel ever in Calangute Goa, Very abusive manager, Organised a wedding party to stay at the hotel, arrived at 6am and the rooms were still dirty from previous occupiers, rooms were not even organised and we were not given rooms to move into until 3-4pm in the afternoon, my mom is disabled and a diabetic and she was left to sit at the poolside all day until the rooms were cleaned. All through out the holiday the staff kept calling us in when we were trying to organise the wedding to pay extra costs for the rooms when they were all payed for, the manager was very rude and was not considerate at all and was just out to get extra money from everyone. Non on the 36 guests were happy and am sure they will all be complaining. The B & B includes just toast and tea or coffee with a tiny glass of orange juice, no hot water and the kitchen sinks were disgusting, beds are rock hard with a 2 inch matress. Pool was filthy and people complained of infections, The thomas cook rep was hopeless and would not help in any situation. Hotel gave is a bill for 15000 rupees (approx £200) for 2 nights which they seemed to think we had as the rooms were all paid for via package deal and they gave us a bill 10 mins before we were leaving and did not pay and then called the rep at the airport and would not let us board until we paid, which i have taken up at the moment with Thomas Cook. Would advise NOT to use this hotel as it will definately ruin your holiday. !!!!

This was mine and my husbands first time to goa, and after reading alot of bad reviews about the hotel i was a bit worried but once i got there it was nothing like the bad reviews said.
It is a basic hotel, we stopped in F8 the staff were very helpful, we played cricket with the staff every day at the rear of the hotel, the room was big enough, cleaned every other day there's a laundry service if needed, the toilet/shower room was clean, the beds are hard but we got used to it, the food at the hotel is brilliant and i cannot believe that people won't give this hotel a chance, they are expecting it to be up the standards we have in england but for the price and as it is a third world country, it will never be the same standards as england.
we never go to the same place twice as the world is a big place but we are saving to go back again very soon.

We have visited Goa many times and have stayed in hotels and apartments before. This hotel is basic, but for the price was very good value. The staff could not have been more helpful and were always polite and good tempered although some of the less erudite guests would have tried the patience of the saintliest of saints. I have to say it made you feel ashamed to be British some of the time. The manners of some of the tour reps also left alot to be desired, engaging in slanging matches with the receptionist in front of guests, is not in my opinion the way to operate in a professional manner.
The breakfast was what you expect in Goa, juice, toast, jam, butter and coffee, quite acceptable and if you wanted anything else it was available and very cheap.
The room was cleaned and bed linen was changed daily. the water in the bathroom was always hot providing you remembered to switch the geyser on beforehand.
The room was equipped with a ceiling fan which was quite adequate and was one of the least noisy I have had.
The bottom line is if you want luxury, don't go to a basic hotel in Goa,but if you want good value, a peaceful location and friendly and helpful hotel staff, then I would recommend this hotel.

In a quiet location, 10 minutes easy walk from the hustle & bustle of Calangute.
The hotel was basic but the rooms were clean and bright ,there was always plenty of very hot water.
The staff were very helpful and pleasant.
The food was to a very good standard and reasonably priced. Breakfast was very basic (normal for Goa ) but there was a huge menu to choose from at a few rupees extra.
The complimentarybus to Calangute was useful, but not essential.

I hated the place.
I have been going to Goa for many years and I know what basic is.
There is a difference between basic and rotten.
I think that all the good reviews must be written by the hotel staff. All the time I was there everyone that I meet did not like the place, But when you get back someone writes a good review. I dont understand.
Anyway crap hotel and crap staff and crap service.
FLEAS in the BEDS AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!
I could sit here for ages and write about how bad this place is but I do have a life to lead.
I did not stay my entire holiday in this hell hole that looks like tenko from the entrance. I as well as many others during my stay left and paid for accomidation elsewhere.
I still love Goa and will go again, But I would warn anyone against this place. It would be harder to deal with if it is your first time in Goa as a couple we meet found out. (We helped them out).
I have written this preview 2 months after I return home.
This is because It still annoys me the way we were treated in this hotel and I would feel bad if someone went to this place without warning.

I have been Going to Calangute for many years and I have always enjoyed myself. However in November I stayed at the Village Royal. This was the worst mistake I have made in recent years.
Yes it is a walk to anywhere from the hotel but we knew that. What we did not expect was the hotel hiring cabs and charging upto double the normal fare/Fleas in the bed/Leaking room/Room not cleaned for 5 days/important phone messages not passed on/rude staff/Money stolen from room/pool not clean just bleach added which bleaced our clothes/hidden charges/ made to pay for a fridge(was ment to be included), if we put anything in the fridge the were trying to charge us 25% corkage. The list goes on
Basicly the hotel is trying to give you a European feel but with European prices.
The hotel staff on the whole were moody and unhelpful, but Marcel the barman was excellent and really helpful.
We left the hotel 9 days into our holiday (we were booked in the hotel for 49 nights) and got an apartment near the beach.
We would have left earlier but we keeped being promised a new room and better service. This never happened.
In the 9 days that we were at the hotel 2 complete groups of people about 30 people left without even staying 1 night.
And 3 couples that we got friendly with left as well.
The hotel manager even tried to blackmail me by only booking me out if I signed a letter that I was leaving the hotel of my own accord and that it was not anything to do with the hotel or staff in the hotel.
1 was the lowest point I could give, but this place should be in the minuses.
I would not recommend this hotel to my worst enemy.

What a brill time I had at the village royal. Very friendly staff, room service was of typical Goan standard ie if you want it ASK !! as the Goan people are very unassuming.
Had some good fun late on at the bar and made some great friends.
village royal maybe a bit out of the resort centre but its nice and quiet at night and K8
was a babe --great hol and will return soon.
