" The wonderful Gokce "

Earlier this year my boyfriend and i decided to look for a last minute cheap holiday. After looking at a few desitinations found the Gokce Hotel for a very resonable price, and for two weeks! We didnt get off to a brilliant start with our flight being delayed to dalaman but of no fault of the Hotel. As soon as we arrived the boys of the hotel took our bags up to our room, which was lovely after being exhausted from our long journey. I couldnt pick a fault with the room...we had no problems with ants or rusty nails...although i dont think we are the type of people to let something like a broken wardrobe ruin our holiday?! The staff at the hotel (ali in particular) were amazing! Ali's english is probably better than my own, so anything we needed or any problems had were completely understood and sorted straight away! We also had some great conversations about Turkish culture and the country in general because of Ali's excelent english.
The breakfast was basic but sufficient but for lunch and dinner we could ask for anything from Ali and he would do his best to please us even if it wasnt on the menu! The longer into our 2 week holiday it got, the more we bonded with other visitors in the hotel and the staff, it was a lovely quiet break, extremely enjoyable and so cheap for everything! I would definately go back to turkey and specifically the Gokce Hotel!

Advice: Lovely holiday for families and couples, beautiful scenery and friendly locals.

Activities: Korfez restaurant.

Good for: Beach

" Will Happily Go Back "

Me and my partner have been to europe few times and decided we needed a change so when booking our holiday we decided on turkey which came with very high recommemdation. We chose Turunc as it said it was a quiet sleepy fishing village which seemed the perfect place. We arrived in turunc at 7am after the 2 and a half hour journey from dalaman airport and was checked in by a nice man called Faz who is part of the family who owned the hotel. At first sight the hotel seemed lovely and we were shown to a ground floor room. We were very dissapointed with our room but decided to get our heads down for a couple of hours. We met the rep at half 10 and the new arrivals after the meeting we were asked if there was any problems with our room and we explained there was ants (as you get anywhere abroad) the wardrobe door was hanging off and it was all round dark and dingy. Within in a few hours we were given a new set of keys and were offered to see the new room.... This was on the top floor (3 flights) we opened the door to a very surprising room it had a double bed double glazed doors a massive roof top balcony with nice views and even aircon (that we didnt pay for)!!! Another bonus with this hotel is there is an excellent pool and childs pool.....The hotel staff are really relaxed and want you to enjoy your stay which we certainaly did. There is a free pool table and also lillos and inflatables to use in the pool. We found the breakfast to be ok but lunch was very good and at a resonable cost. You have to eat out every night as the hotel dosn't cater for this but the strip of bars is a 2 minute walk away and you will find many lovely resturants which serve very good food, especially steaks. In Turunc there resturant reps do not pester you to come in, although if you say you will come back later in the week, they will remember. there are also a few bars to visit but to be honest every night we went back to the hotel and had most fun with all of the friends we made and even a little late night swimming. we visited many other rooms and they all differ slightly and apart from our first room on the ground floor all seemed lovely and good enough for the few hours you spend in there. Although a point must be made that most rooms had two single beds apart from our "penthouse" which had a double bed (and headboard)
personally we had a brilliant time and are happy to go back. Yes the hotel rooms are basic but the rest of the hotel was great as were the people we met and the people that run the hotel. We couldnt of asked for a better break and the weather was excellent especially if you like lounging in a hammock with a good book!
We definatly recommend and cant wait to go back.
Ben and Leann

Advice: Quiet and friendly great to relax.

Activities: Turkish bath (must do) scuba diving and turtle beach.

Good for: Beach

" The Hotel from Hell "

Avoid the Gokce like the plague. We booked in for 2 weeks B&B and on arrival (about 9.15pm) I had to lug my own case up 4 flights of stairs. The room we had was basic and I mean basic! The curtains did not close and the door rattled during the night with even the slightest breeze. The next morning I spoke to the hired help (Ali---smarmy git)and pointed out that our reservation paperwork said the room should sleep 3, so could we move? This was sorted when the rep arrived and we duly relocated (no help offered, so we moved ourselves). The next room was in a different building and on closer inspection we found one of the wardrobe doors hanging off and in the bathroom the toilet was stained and there was nowhere to put the shower-head so you basically had to shower whilst holding the shower-head.There was also a rusty 2" screw sticking out of the wall near the shower mixer tap.The beds were not that comfortable and the next morning I woke to find my bed covered in ants (mainly around my head). Another move to another room (3 in 3 days). Back to the original building---different floor--overlooking the pool (nice pool by the way)but the next night was marred by 4 lunatics jumping into the pool at 1.30am and playing loud music (presumably using the stereo by the pool bar) Given that the family who run the place live on site, nobody came out to stop the noise. After putting up with this place for a week we moved to another hotel at our own expense (Barbarosa Beach) at the other end of town. We were not the only ones who moved---2 other couples who'd arrived a day before us only stuck it out for one night. Turunc is a lovely place and we've been there 5/6 times but now it's getting a bit too commercial and Turkey is no longer a cheap holiday destination. A word about Dalaman airport---they charge £4 for a machine coffee (inc McD & BurgerKing). The holiday companies should really make an issue of this because it's profiteering at the extreme and once you're in there, you're a captive audience!

" when i booked this hotel i was very... "

when i booked this hotel i was very dubious after reading the reviews but once there i was pleasently suprised the hotel had good facilities was clean and comfortable which was good after a three hour transfer from dalaman airport ! i would recomend taking a travel cot if taking young babies as the cot provided was completly unsafe and a rust bucket! staff were all very helpfull apart from the photographers who try to sting you for as much as possible for your photos originally asking 200 lira for 95 photos hold out for as long as poss i got mine for 20 sterling in the end! the kidz club is non exsistant never any staff and when there was they didnt speak english. the town itself is very small but had a few nice restraunts and bars which was handy as the first weeks menu at the hotel was very poor but turned around in the second week. there is a aqua park on site free to hotel guests which was brilliant for keeping the kids busy in short i would return next year as you cant fault the weather or location.

" Turunc is a stunningly beautiful... "

Turunc is a stunningly beautiful place full of the friendly local people we have come to expect from any resort in Turkey.

The rooms and food at the Gokce Hotel were average at best, with the repeat visitors to whom we spoke telling us of maintenance issues going unresolved for years. One mattress in particular was the butt of many jokes and appeared to be approaching its 10th birthday! A resident while we were there left something under the bed when he left saying that he fully expected that the cleaner would not find it and he would see it on his next visit.
The Gokce seemed to have the best pool in Turunc but unfortunately the arrangement allowing its use by the residents of the apartments over the road often made it noisy. Likewise, the pool bar appeared to be used as an evening creche for the children of the owners and their relatives, so was rarely used by the people staying at the hotel.
Despite all of this, the hotel did not particularly spoil our holiday and there was a large proportion of repeat visitors and lots of jokes about Fawlty Towers.

For the best food in Turunc go to Serkan Restaurant, which can be found just off the main street between Musti Restaurant and the Internet Cafe. We worked our way through the menu during our 3 week stay and also tested their offer to cook Turkish meals not on the menu providing we gave them 2 hours notice. The food and service was never anything less than excellent and they even went out and got a specific wine that we asked for as they didnt stock it. The Ottoman casserole and sea bass were my particular favourites from the menu and if you pre order mezzes or Turkish liver you are in for a treat.

We were a little disappointed with the boat trips on offer as they all seemed quite similar, with the top decks packed with sunbeds and no space between them, and all went to the same bays at the same time. All charged in the region of £10 for the day but Musti`s boat appeared to be the favourite amongst the majority due to the friendliness of the crew. We decided to pay a bit extra at £25 and go on a gullet, the Erayim 2, with a maximum capacity of 14 people. This went to bays further along the coast where few other boats went to and often we were the only boat there. In our opinion this was well worth the extra cost.

A hidden gem in Turunc is to walk the road from Turunc to Amos Beach. It takes around 40 minutes each way and is quite hilly but the views are spectacular. For those a little more adventurous there are some rocks on the way where you can get some amazing photos with a bit of careful climbing.

Be aware that Turunc is by no means the cheapest resort in Turkey due to the fact that the local mayor sets many of the prices charged by the hotels, boats and restaurants. We were told that businesses not complying with the recommended prices could be fined or even closed down. A large beer, for example, is 5 lira in Turunc but only 3 lira down the road in Icmeler. A large bottle of water that you could buy in the supermarket for 0.75 lira was 2.5 lira at the Gokce.

On the whole, we had a fantastic holiday but as yet we are undecided as to whether we will return. If we do, we will definitely not be staying at the Gokce (self catering is probably a better option) but we will definitely eat at Serkan Restaurant every day.

" I went to the Gokce hotel with my... "

I went to the Gokce hotel with my friend and her family. The family that runs the Gocke are extremely friendly and lovely people. I thoroughly enjoyed the visit, as the hotel is so near the main street. It has a lovely pool with a baby pool as well and lovely balconies that give a nice view of Turunc. The barmen were also very friendly, and it was definitely the best holiday I've been on!

" We booked this deal about a month... "

We booked this deal about a month before travel and read reviews about Gokce Hotel on this and other sites. Our group consisted of two young girls (2 and 4) plus two adults.

The hotel staff are very friendly and the pool area is great for kids and parents. Free use of lilos and sun beds. In addition, there is an additional pool across the road, which is owned by a cousin of the hotel and you can use that (a bit cooler than the hotel pool).

Breakfast and hotel are basic but when you consider how much time you spend in the hotel bedroom this is not important. Air conditioning is available at an extra charge. We stayed on the ground floor and did not bother even with night time temperatures around 26 degrees, the rooms were quite cool. However, this may not apply to all rooms especially those above ground level.

Beers and basic snacks can be bought in the hotel, but with a very short walk there are two restaurants available (beer is also slightly cheaper!).

The hotel prefer if you buy drinks and snacks in the hotel but are happy for you to buy stuff they do not provide such as certain soft drinks, ice cream, crisps etc.

The resort is also very quiet but has enough bars and restaurants to cater for every taste and if required you can catch English/Scottish sports matches in certain bars.

If you fancy travelling further afield, boat taxis can take you to Marmaris or Icmeler (very limited service to Icmeler - check before travelling) or take the dolmus.

Boat trips are also available, we took a 5 bay trip which cost about £10, but shop around as prices do vary. In addition, if you want, you can hire your own speed boat!!

Other points, the transfer time of 2.5 hours was a little long and we had to change vehicles on both journeys which was inconvenient, especially on the return journey.

Also, the leg from Marmaris to Turunc is fantastic, beautiful scenery but just do not look down at times!

All in all a good holiday and a good hotel base from which to enjoy the resort or just lay around the pool.

Beware, Dalaman airport is very expensive although modern. They offer food and drink at the most expensive prices I have seen anywhere in the world! So eat and drink before you leave to return to the UK!

" We have been going to the Gokce Hotel... "

We have been going to the Gokce Hotel in turunc now for 6 years, and never has it once crossed our minds to go anywhere else.

The people are extremely friendly, and with their cousins owning a restaurant over the road, family life is very welcoming.

Every year when we have gone we have been welcomed with open arms and bid farewell pleasantly with gifts and hugs.

" We had initially booked at the Pelin... "

We had initially booked at the Pelin Hotel with Holidays 4U but, shortly before we were due to travel, our travel agent informed us that the Pelin was closed, so we re-booked at the Gokce - at a considerably higher price - with Jewel in the Crown.

The Gokce is a 30 roomed hotel and for the first week we were the only people staying there. The room was clean and functional and the pool area was well presented and tidy. I would advise anybody staying at the Gokce to bring a torch or buy a one locally, which we did after the first night.

The reason for this was that the hotel poolside lights were switched off before we arrived back (typically between 2200-2300) and there were numerous trip hazards to be avoided (broken paving / pool inspection cover) before we reached the stairs.

The stair lights only operated from the top going downwards and the steps themselves were of varying height, so, even with our torch, I tripped a couple of times going up.

Jewel in the Crown makes great play of this hotel’s being family run by the daughter of the owner, who is “really kind, helpful, and friendly.” Unfortunately this lady was rarely there during our stay, as she has recently had a baby.

The members of the family whom we saw appeared indifferent to our presence and did not even wish us good bye on our last day. The young men who served our breakfast were attentive and the tour rep was pleasant.

We had stayed in Turunc last year at the Pelin which beat the Gokce hands down in every department and we were very disappointed that it was not open for business. We found Turunc to be noisier than before and now caters for the Brit who likes Karaoke; quiz nights, wide screen TV showing sport – even in some restaurants.

There is now a restaurant which boasts “authentic Yorkshire fish and chips” - OK if you like that sort of thing. We noticed that large numbers of apartments are being built, so, very soon, what charm this place has will be gone.

We have travelled to Turkey on numerous occasions but will not be returning to Turunc.

" Tucked away over a mountain or a 40... "

Tucked away over a mountain or a 40 min boat trip from Marmaris lies the idyllic bay of Turunc. You fly to Dalaman and it takes approx 2 hrs to reach Marmaris from where your operator arranges a “taxi” over the 400m high mountain. In the early hours, the view from the top is spectacular and even better during sunlight. The taxi drive might be a bit hair-raising as the road over the mountain hasn’t been modernised yet, but the locals sure know the roads well!

Arriving at The Gocke hotel, 5 mins walk from the beach, I was greeted by the owners who showed us to a clean pool- view room on landing 2 of its 3 storeys. There was air-conditioning at a local charge, but we made a deal with the owners and got it much reduced. I always think if you’re polite and friendly, most locals will go out of their way to help.

The pool was fantastic. clean, with bar to refresh you at lunchtime with sandwiches and water and plenty of sunbeds. In fact the place wasn’t full at all as were NONE of the hotels in Turunc. Its worth booking the hotel and buying flights separately...they’re only £10 per night. The staff and owners were extremely helpful although few spoke much English but they loved it if you tried to speak Turkish.

Breakfast was typically Turkish, salad/tomatoes/ham/cheese and if you ask for a Turkish coffee, they’ll make you one..free!

After breakfast, we took a 5 min maximum stroll to the main street. Because it’s a little bay, away from the hustle and bustle of Marmaris, and although there were tourists (mostly on day trips from Marmaris) the streets weren’t packed. In fact, although it was Aug, it felt like early season.

The main street has lots of restaurants similarly priced and all of equal quality. The food REALLY was excellent. I stuck to local foods rather than anything with chips and I wasn’t disappointed. An average meal, bread to start, wine and food cost approx £6 a head. Local RAKI (ouzo to us Brits) was often free and they gave children free squash and water whenever I asked.

Jewellery shops, souvenir shops, local hole-in-the-wall etc were all there a-plenty so you didn’t need to run out of ideas.

The bars were great - catering for the younger tourists (although no “lager louts” were visible at any time of our stay). Families, couples and all ages took to the evening entertainment and drinks were usual prices £2 a cocktail etc/spirits-local beer somewhat cheaper. Bars stayed open till 1am and at weekends, later till 3am.

The beach was narrow, man-made and had the usual array of sea-front restaurants all crying out for your custom. This was the only letdown of the whole place. Mind you, the pool was much better at keeping us cool. there were plenty of watersports ongoing which could be booked at the marina.

The local taxi-boats went regularly to Marmaris and Icmeler (every 30 mins for £2 return) and you could book day trips to Rhodes etc, which is only across the water an hour away. In addition, there were other local boat-trips which were well worth going on and I thoroughly recommend. You could book with your operator or more cheaply by Travel Agents on the main street or on the Marina quayside itself. For those who prefer dry land, the local Dolmus (minibus taxi) called each hour to return to Icmeler or Marmaris over the mountain. Nerves of steel required for this trip!

All in all, the holiday was peaceful, relaxing and gave me a thought that there must be plenty of other little “Bays” in and around the Turkish coast that often become overlooked because of their close association to Marmaris or the likes.
If you want a brilliant holiday without the crowds, go to Turunc...you’ll not regret it.
