My husband and I stayed here for two weeks during a very hot and humid spell. This is a lovely hotel, clean, spacious and very friendly. The family who own and run the hotel also own the ice cream shop, bar and jewellery shop on the same site. They work extremely hard and are always smiling and pleasant with a cheery 'kali mera' every day.
We stayed in a studio for 3 which was cleaned 6 times per week, linen and towels changed twice per week. We had air conditioning which was very welcome. The self-catering facilities were the usual Greek sink/2 electric rings unit with an added bonus of kettle, toaster, coffee maker and sandwich toaster. There were plenty of utensils and crockery. The bathroom was an adequate size with a small bath with shower over plus a hair-dryer.
Platanes is a busy little resort most suited to couples and families. We tried several tavernas and found the food both good and plentiful everywhere - we settled on 2 favourites, To Steki and Vergina No2. We also liked Sky Park taverna but only visited this near the end of our stay and wish we had discovered it earlier, it doesn't look much from the front as you can only see the bar, but if you walk through it opens up into a beautiful garden with comfortable chairs and tables. The staff were very friendly, the food delicious and reasonably priced.
The beach isn't far from the Axos - across the road and down a pretty lane, its a long stretch of sand and shingle which shelves very steeply into deep water so please take care with children. On a number of days during our stay the sea was quite rough with large waves coming in very fast. There is a red/green flag system in place but unfortunately some people did choose to ignore this which must have been very frustrating for the lifeguard patrolling a long stretch of beach on his quad.
The friendliness of the people in Platanes is second to none and you are made to feel welcome everywhere you go which gives the resort a very safe feeling - despite the fact that it was so hot that we only left the resort once to go into Rethymno on the bus (well worth the effort!) we had a wonderful holiday.
