Management response from Tom Sweeney, Programme Director

Thank you for the positive review. Since 2005 we have added the Kander-Lodge with higher standard rooms which each have 2 beds and also purchased the Sunneblick which is great for groups. We continue to work on the Campsites to make them a little less rocky.

Kandersteg International Scout Centre comprises of a traditional Swiss chalet (once home to the tunnel diggers of the impressive 14km long tunnel that links Kandersteg with the outside world) and a modern extension, doubling the size of the overall building. It also owns a campsite capable of housing 900+ people, though the ground is very rocky, comprising of mainly spoil excavated from the tunnel. The chalet itself can sleep 200, mainly in dormitories. Whilst this is a scout centre it is open to all, offering full and half board along with self catering kitchens. Volunteer scouts from around the world run the centre. All very helpful and cheerful. Whilst this is not luxurious accommodation it is friendly, clean and sensibly priced.
The village itself is very typical of a Swiss alpine village. Plenty of tourist shops and bars but while retaining a traditional and laid back feel. Fantastic views and great walls from your doorstep, for all abilities. The people are very friendly and the whole valley has an indescribable magical charm that makes one feel very much at peace, and reluctant to return home!
