Submitted By: Mr A P Fosterelounda nice town and harbour with abundant shops restaurants and lots of other good hotels you would be best to stay at. i can reccommend the modest 2 star hotel krini friendly management and family run. its 2 star and nothing else the rooms reflect this with minor faults but well it provided me with decent shelter seeing how this 4 star took the money and gave me the 2 finger salute. anyway i digress the town is great for bars and restaurants just dont eat the pizzas the toppings come out of a can and their version of a crab salad is fish sticks. try the greek dishes which are full of flavour and reasonably priced. we travelled over the eastern part of the island and all the restaurants were fantastic greek dishes the crete food was gorgeous cheese pies stuffed vine leaves moussakka all gorgeous. this could have been one excellent holiday had this hotel situation not have occurred the food in short great. car hire was very reasonable just watch your driving the greeks drive anyway they want to undertaking speeding overtaking on white lines. but the road police will have you with on the spot fines should you decide to drive the greek way. if you hire a bike or quad ensure you have a helmet (does'nt have to be on your head) greek law says you have to have to have a helmet, its safer on your head but most wear them on their arms. car hire £80 for 4 days peugeot 107 all in no cdw necessary car had less than 500 k on the dial and air conditioned. went into the mountains remote beaches and the greek ruins.
all in all i loved crete and if i ever manage to get a refund want to return maybe to elounda definitely not the elounda res hotel knowing the managements attitude. but i noticed there are a lot of british living out there, not that i like that, but suits my tastes and i can see what they see in this little bit of shangri la. i like to meet and mix with the locals the hotel krini family were ok towards us giving an insight to the crete way of life.
if anyone else has been subjected to similar treatment from this 4 star inept management please record it on the hotel report sites such as this

Submitted By: Mr L EllershawThat night we had very high winds and the window at the end of the corridor blew through and glass spread everywhere.
The staff were very inhelpful and lazy and very little effort was taken to be polite to the customers. Me, I dropped a glass and smashed it and I recieved the most dirty look off the lady behind the bar.
The Next day we went for breakfast, we were forced to eat dry toast, nuts, fruit salad and milk, all for the price of 6euros pp. That evening we went and ate in the resturant and had a buffet. The buffet was frankly crap! and the food was very expensive. The spaghetti was more like curry and cost a bomb, for 2 adults and a child i cost us 48 euros excluding drinks!!!!!!!!
I ADVISE YOU NOT TO GO TO THE RESIDENCE AS IT IS THE WORSE PLACE I HAVE EVER STAYED, I WOULD HAVE PREFERD TO STAY IN A CARAVAN IN WALES!
I advise you to spend as much time in Elounda as possible as that place is immense, try the cafe eden as the do a mean full english and always get a taxi!!!!! (from reception)

Submitted By: Miss S ValentineOn our 5.00am arrival at the hotel we were greeted by a photocopied letter saying that there is no space for us and that they are putting us in their sister hotel and they will contact us when there is space.
we were put into a 2 star hotel all inclusive. this hotel was krini hotel and it was appauling. we was not happy that we had been demoted from 4 star to 2 star. in the morning we went up to speak to the manager and meet our rep. when speaking to the manager he was abrupt and rude saying "i am busy i am busy" i told him that it was unaccepteble putting us in a 2 star he said he cant do anything and thta was that i said the food in the hotel was disgusting and his reply was "it is the same here!" shocked i walked off and spoke to the rep. i explained that we wasnt happy she agreed and got the manager to allow us to use the facilities in the hotel and eat there too. he aproached us supprisingly being nice and said, writting a note down that we could have 2 free drinks that night. we were alot happier but having to walk the distance and up the hill was quite tiring before eating! the next day after 2 nights in the horrid hotel we had a letter saying we could go back our room was ready.
they said they would collect us and our bags but we was out on an excursion so they said they would collet our bags and put them in our room for us. we arrived to our room and we had been put into a room which had an amazing view!
the food we ate was of a good standard and tasted brilliant! breakfast was bit limited though!
the hotel was clean and tidy and the pool was great. the staff were friendly and funny.
a warning to the elderly or parents with young children and buggies! there is a big steep hill to get up to the hotel. we're in our early 20's and resonably fit and it killed us! taxis were a life saver!
overbooking and being put into a horrid hotel by the manager was the downfall of this hotel.

Submitted By: Miss Betty BoOpit took us up too 1 hour to reach our hotel and everyone was ready to complain. we got made sit outisde for 4hours, only getting a bottle of water and an apple each because the rooms where not ready.!
As we finaly got into our rooms, it was disgusting! very dirty, and very cold , we had to pay 9 euros a day for our heating & air conditioning. The toilet didnt function properly and the bed sheets where marked.
In the morning we all went down for a swim in the pool and a bite to eat. NOT anything great on the menu! a choice between oaty cereals, dry toast, fruit and nuts for breakfast ! we got treated very badly as the staff where very inconsiderate and rude ! they only listened to the germans.
the entertainment on the other hand was far worse.NOTHING i mean NOTHING!
we had to supply our own things to make it a good night! a karoke night which most people enjoyed but it was all down to us and none of the staff helped.
The meals where atrocious, stone cold every night!
so me and another 4 families went to complain and eventually someone came to talk to us and said he will move us to another hotel. So we get right up packing and on our way. as there was 5 families, all our kids where ruffly the same ages, so they all made great friends. 16,15,15,15,14,13,12 5 and 6 ! The hotel was alot better at the new hotel snacks during the day, hot and cold meals with a large selection of meals at all hours! the rooms where much better, clean air conditioning, free safety deposit box, our own fridge, bath shower, a working toilet! the staff where just great aswell treated us brilliantly, as we where right next to a hotel it was free entry during the day and the kids went in the pools, waterslides, arcades, banana boats, ruber rings, ski jets, scuba diving, henna tatoos, hair braiding, and foam partys ! it was just excellent!
i saw the diffrence and all the staff where very very friendly, we all met up during the day and at night. the kids where away all day untill it was time to go to bed. they where all great friends and got on really well. They still are very good friends now and keep in contact, and going on a holiday this year to benidorm !
so overall i really dont recomend this for anyone expecialy not familys!
trust me ( im sorry if you have booked this already) but this is the worst hotel i have ever been in and it will be for you..

Submitted By: bloodrushdolphinEating out at the nearby resort was top class. Overall, a nice relaxing location with nightlife late into the early hours if you want it. Plenty of places for a good walk, try over the bridge & over the mountain to the small beach (but take some water with you!).
Elounda residence. I'm missing you already!

Submitted By: Mr M AinslieThe apartments where as good if not better than any other2/3 star accommodation in Greece. A/C is extra but effective and worth it. Staff where friendly and helpful the pool is good it is salt water but I preferred that to the usual chemical treated pool.
The view is fantastic probably the best balcony view we’ve ever had.
All in all one of the better Greek resorts we’ve been to.

Submitted By: Mrs J Haywood18 Euros will get you a buffet dinner at Elounda residence. Two people can eat and drink for the same price in town.
It is stretching the point to call the accommodation self catering. Not even the basics of a kettle or toaster available for tea and toast. Don't expect to be able to cater for yourselves at all, you will be sadly disappointed.
Don't expect a safety deposit box either. There are only 21 available (9 euros per day). We had to share with another family of five who we had never met before.
Don't expect the air conditioning to work either, (another 9 euros per day).
Don't be tempted to book the barbeque - not enough food provided to cater for everyone. Greedy folk take more than they can eat and leave nothing for the polite people who wait for the queue to die down.
Don't expect to receive any positive actions on complaints.
Don't expect to be able to book a room for a late checkout. There are no rooms available. We checked out of our rooms 12 hours before our pick up time. We were expected to use an outside open cold-water shower to refresh before we left. Another family allowed 7 adults to shower and change in their room.
Don't go to Elounda residence!

Submitted By: Mrs D MillsThe staff were very friendly and made you feel welcome. The walk into to town (down the mountain) was a lot more enjoyable than the walk up (we did it twice!) the taxis take you up for 5 euros, its well worth it!
Elounda town is an amazing place with so many great tavernas (The Makris was outstanding value for money).
We wouldn't pay full price for the residence but as a late cheap deal it was great
We would definitely go back to Elounda.

Submitted By: Mr G M McKinneyThese apartments are without doubt the worst I have ever come across.
We should have cancelled the holiday when Kosmar changed the flight from Monarch to Excel Airways. We were delayed 24 hours at Manchester and were told it was due to a problem with our flight in Egypt. I am pretty sure that this was not the case as Excel gave the same excuse to other holidaymakers going to other resorts at the same time.
We could have gone home and gained a full refund. Oh we wish we had.
We went to customer service at the airport and they gave us the impression that it was not uncommon for Excel flights to be delayed. As individuals Kosmar and Excel are inept but together a disaster in the making. They both have no idea how to treat customers. I phoned Kosmar before we finally got a flight and they were absolutely useless. Indeed you would have thought it was our fault!
Getting back to the apartments. When we arrived we were horrified by what we were expected to live in for a fortnight. In the UK I am sure the health and safety people would close the room down. It was horrible and had exposed electricity wires hanging from the wall. As it was 5AM we decide to have a few hours sleep and then complain.
I went down to reception and was informed that no other rooms were available. I then went back to the room packed the bags and camped in reception. A miracle happened, they found us another room.
To be honest we would have complained about this room if we had been taken there first but we were so relieved to get out of the first one we put up with it (grubby).
To describe these apartments as 4 star is beyond belief (0 stars is more accurate). As yet I have not talked about the Germans. I have been going abroad now for 30 years and apart from a holiday in Turkey I have never experienced such ill manners.
Elounda is itself very pretty and a visit to Spinalonga a must.
The food in the resort was not as good as we had expected from other reviews we read of Elounda. The restaurants were at best average but mainly pretty poor.
I visited Malia 25 years ago before it was quite the bustling resort it is now and thoroughly enjoyed it. The Elounda Residence has put me of Greece for good which I suppose is sad.
Be warned (I am sorry for you if you have already booked). Do not go to the Elounda Residence.

Submitted By: Mrs V R O'NeillWe returned on 1st Oct 2005 from a 2 week holiday in Elounda in Crete. Having left there at midnight on the Friday, (2200 hours uk time) we arrived home at 12 noon via Gatwick some 5 hours longer journey because they cancelled our returning aircraft to Stanstead. Well as they said there were only 53 of us wanting to return to this location so they put half of us on the East Midlands flight and the other half travelled with us to Gatwick. We were then bussed back to Stanstead.
We were only informed via a note on the information board when we went the check the details the previous day. The rep also asked us to meet her in reception that evening as she had some money for us!!!!
We went to meet her but as she was already dealing with another complainant at the office she was unable to come up so could we go down to the office in Elounda (see following comments also).
When we got to the office she had 28 euros for each of us as an "in resort" payment as she described it and asked us to sign a disclaimer form, realistically we should have refused to sign it and then taken them up on their broken contract on our return. However having had problems with Kosmar on previous holidays I have now decided enough is enough, I will never book another holiday with them again.
One of the reasons I have put up with their previous shenanigans is that they do always seem to get very good accommodation, however, not this time. Elounda Residence is geared very much to German holiday makers. The block of rooms we were in was dark and quite dismal, the carpet was in dire need of a hoovering and the mattresses fell very short in the back support department. Luckily we had 4 beds so I put one mattress on top of the other in an attempt to get a better nights sleep. It did improve things.
In the brochure it is described as follows "The elevated position and the many steps at the complex means it is unsuitable for those with walking difficulties. It's about a 20 minutes stroll to the centre of Elounda" .........I am 58 and go to the gym at least 3 times a week and consider myself as reasonably fit. It was without doubt not a 20 minute stroll and at one point is equivalent to a 1 in 3 hill which is very uncomfortable in that heat...........as the saying goes they are having a laugh. But not at this girls expense anymore.
The plus points: good facilities, super staff, views.
The 'not-so-plus' points: heck of a hill down into the town, our apartment was a little tired, but not too disappointing.
If you can manage the hillside location, you’ll find it hard to beat the Elounda Residence.
Best advice sleep in the hotel, maybe use the pool for a swim (the sea is warmer) but use the great town of Elounda for everything else.
Do not at any cost eat in the hotel the assault on your taste buds will take days to get over, their is now a taverna on site where the food is pretty good but it is cheaper and better in Elounda.
We decided we would happily return to Elounda but never to the residence.
Oh and to the people who thought the bus driver didn't know how to drive - he still doesn't.
