Lovely apartment, perfect location

We stayed in apartment five at the Polydoros Apartments, which is on the first floor of the building. The apartments are quite basic but have everything you need for a comfortable stay: the bedroom is air conditioned; the kitchen has a small hob, oven, kettle and cooking utensils; there is a saftey deposit box and the room was cleaned and towels changed daily (except for Sunday and Monday). From the balcony of the apartments on the first floor there is a lovely sea view. There is a snack bar attached to the apartments which is open throughout the day and there is a supermarket just across the road.
If you are looking for a peaceful and relaxing environment the location of the Polydoros Apartments is ideal. It is quite a way from the hustle and bustle of the town centre (though this is within walking distance), the area is quite quiet and couples/ family orientated. Less than two minutes walk away from the apartments there is a small, sandy beach which is perfect for spending the day sunbathing and swimming in the sea. You can hire two sun loungers and a parasol for the day for €7. Another five minute walk down the road there is a shingle beach with a scuba diving centre.
It is a fifteen minute walk to reach the centre of Agios Nikolaos which is where the majority of the shops, bars and restaurants are located. The focal point of the town is harbour and the lake which is right in the centre. It is a lot more expensive to eat in the centre of the town - it cost us approximately €20 more to get a three course meal for two in the town than it did at some of the restaurants further out. The lake is beautiful setting though and it is probably worth paying the extra once or twice for the experience.
There are plenty of excursions and daytrips available, the most unique being a boat trip to Spinalonga, the former leper colony and Venetian fortress which is the subject of the best selling novel "The Island" by Victoria Hislop. I would highly recommend the trip to Spinalonga, you spend an hour there and have the opportunity to explore the island, including what remains of the township built by the lepers- most of the buildings were demolished after the colony closed in 1957 but you can still see the structures of the hospital, some of the houses, and the graveyard. There is also a small museum which gives a very comprehensive account of the island's history.
Within Agios Nikolaos itself there is an excellent archaeological museum which explores the history of ancient Greece and has artefacts dating as far back as 5000 b.c.
The only downside to staying at the Polydoros was that we had to pay an extra €25 to keep our room open til 6p.m. on the day of departure. This was the latest we could check out and we weren't picked up to go to the airport until midnight so we had six hours stuck with our luggage! The transfer from the airport takes 1.5 hours due to the amount of pick ups on the way so if you do want to go to Agios Nikolaos it may be worth hiring a car, especially if you have overnight flights. Aside from this, the holiday was perfect and we would definitely come back.

good holiday

just returned from our holiday in polydoros apartments, the best room is no:6, this is the only room with a sea view, all other rooms face onto the stairs or a brick wall!!!. We where in room 6..... what a view over looking the sea... FANTASTIC. The room was clean and had every thing you would need for a self catering holiday. The beds and towels where changed twice in one week. The reception and snack/bar area is always very busy with the local people, and closes at 8pm every night, so very quiet after this time, plenty of sun loungers right at the sea. Water sports just one minuite away. Polydoros is in a very quiet area so if its party party party your looking for this is not for you. Twenty minuite walk takes you into the center which is very nice for a meal and a drink. We found the shops very disapointing ( Not many). Close to the polydoros are a couple of nice resteraunts but no bars. If you have trouble walking you may find it a bit hard to get up and down the dirt road to get to the apartments. You need to be out of your room by 12 although they ask you to be out for 11am, there is no shower facilities, or anywhere to leave your luggage, to keep your room on is 25 euros but you can only keep the room untill 6pm. if your looking for a quiet holiday this would suit.

My friend and I have just returned from a one week holiday in Polydoros studios and apartments in Agios Nikolaos. We had a great time there. The apartments are right on a lovely sandy beach. They are very clean with full bathroom and kitchen. We would most definitely go there again. The one problem we experienced was the demise of XL and Kosmar with whom we were travelling. When we finally discovered that Thomas Cook were responsible for repatriation we thought all would be ok. Whilst the owners of Polydoros were absolutely fantastic to us and the other guests Thomas Cook failed to provide any real form of customer service. This was surprising given their reputation and the fact that they had recently signed an agreement with Polydoros for next season. We did not see one Thomas Cook representative at the apartments - we actually went to their office to seek information about flights home. We were eventually informed via a notice at the apartments late on Monday night that we would be picked up the following day and flown to Manchester and not Gatwick. Despite telephoning Thomas Cook in London and ATOL we were told "take it or leave it". Upon arrival at Heraklion airport on Tuesday evening we discovered that there was availability on flights to Gatwick but we would be asked to pay approximately Eur 300. We flew back to Manchester where we eventually found our way to coaches for the 5 hour journey to Gatwick. I have to say that the staff of Thomas Cook whom we encountered at Heraklion did not appear to have any customer service skills. They were mostly rude and unhelpful. I will not be in any rush to book a holiday through them. On a positive note I really would recommend the Polydoros Apartments.

This was my first visit to Crete and really can't complain about the holiday as the room was spotless with a wonderful view over the bay. It was in an ideal spot for an early morning swim in the sea and the sunloungers were right next to the water to cool down from the glorious sun we had all week! Our hostess Helena and her son were very friendly and the apartment was cleaned every day. The studios were in a picturesque location and it was only a ten minute walk to the cosmopolitan centre of Agios Nikolaos. We will definetly return here again but for two weeks of relaxing bliss!

Although in a scenic position these apartments were dissapointing once inside.
Studio 5 where we stayed was very dark and stuffy in main living area and kitchen and also the bathroom having no windows. The lights were not all working which made it even darker. We arrived at 6am no one on site and the rooms were unbearably hot and even though we were exhausted we could not stay in them, we eventually got the air con control from the manager when she arrived at 7.30am but it took hours to get the room to a suitable temperature to rest.
The shower was unable to be hung on wall and was clogged up so was not much use although it did have a bath.
In our studio the mattresses were awful you could feel the springs and no mattress covers! Pillows also terrible seemed like they were about ten years old lumpy!
Plenty of hanging space and on the whole very clean with sheets and towels changed about every 3 days.
Studio 6 has the best view and the brightest room.
The snack bar was only open until 9pm and frequented by locals most of the time so was fairly busy during afternoon and evening.
Not suitable for older people of anyone with walking problems as access from road down fairly steep slope and pathways along the sea promenade were uneven and quite hazadous.
The walk into the edge of town takes at least 20 minutes along a very busy road and longer to reach the Lake or Marina, do not take a car down it is so crowded!
These studios seem to be used by Kosmar and Excel and Kosmar do nothing to help with safege of luggage when you have a late flight and expecting you to take your luggage fairly long way across busy road to catch coach back. They seem to want to do as little as possible once you are there not really interested in any problems.
If you stay here hire a car in England before you goits cheaper, pick up from Airport and return to Airport avoid the coach, it takes over 1 12 hours to get back to Airport stopping along the way.
