I was a little worried about booking the Althay Appartments but am delighted that I did.
I have stayed at numerous hotels and appartments on Fuerteventura and for value for money this is by far the best.
Antonio and his staff worked ceaslessly to attend to everyones wish, always smiling and cheerful.
The rooms are clean and quite large with twin beds in the bedroom and a sofa bed in the lounge. All have large patios or balconies and are cleaned every other day.
The Althay is 2 star and so is the price. Do not expect gormet food you will get a well cooked simple selection that anyone can find a meal to suit them.
There is FREE Wi Fi in the reception area and a well stocked shop if you fancy a little shopping.
A 42 inch TV is in the bar/restaurant area but is never intrusive and if you want to avoid it that is easily accomplished.
There is a pleasant pool area which is undergoing some work to improve it but this does not affect the guest.
If you are looking for a lively holiday this hotel is not for you. If you want some peace and quiet and can entertain yourself they it would be a good choice.
Away from the main town set in a quiet area it is a 15-20 minute stroll to the beach
There are Foreign as well as English guests here as in most hotels in the southern part of the island. Some of the 2 star English guests did not seem to understand this.
Transfers or taxi charges from the airport will be around £70-£80 so hiring a car is a good option, then you can see the island.
Thank you to all the Althay staff for making my stay special.

I arrived at Althay apartments on the 19th May 2010 for a week. Having read previous reviews we were abit worried how it would be but we were very suprised. Everything was clean and tidy both pools were cleaned every morning, the food was fine even for a fussy eater like myself and my 3 year old daughter. I would like to sing the praises of the staff who where incredible, Antonio my god this guy was unbelieveable he honestly couldn't do enough for you and just worked all the time, and the 2 ladies and gent who worked the bar and dining room (sorry didn't catch there name) also just so friendly and very hard workers. This is a fantastic place to stay if you're looking for a quiet holiday and like to get out through the days. There's a free bus to the zoo everyday at 10.10am or 11.10am which picks you up outside the hotel then picks you back up at the zoo 16.45pm. The zoo is a brilliant day out you can get really close up to the animals, there is a sea lion show on at 14.00pm which is hilarious there is also a kids petting zoo next to a relly good park.
The beach is about a 10 min walk away and is absolutely gorgeous bright blue sea golden sand beautiful, even has fish right on the shore and very friendly chipmunks who live on the back on beach which will just come and takes nuts out of your hand fab!
A holiday is what you make it at the end of the day if you're after pub crawls and boozy places don't go here not that kind of night life but plenty of quiet bars and restaurants.
The African market is on on a Wednesday and a Sunday and is a 2min walk away. Be prepared to haggle on the prices they are dear and they do expect it.
Other towns are a bus ride away and are worth checking out.

we read the reviews after we booked,so was not looking forward 2our holiday.but when we arrived were pleasantly surprised, food was fine, hotel clean and staff well mannered, the only thing i would moan about was the beds need updating and they need to put doubles in some rooms.theres not alot to do but you can hire a car 4 20 pounds a day, would recommend the zoo(free bus)its a really good day out.people say about an english pub in jandia,if i wanted a pint and packet of crisps i would have stayed at home.

these appartments should be raised to the ground they are distgusting. there was dirt everywhere all the crockery had to be washed before use. my friend and i went in may 08
we were shocked on arrival to find there was nothing to eat and that there was nowhere
comforyable to sit only on wooden dining chairs. the next morning we were looking forward to our breakfast what a joke food was undercooked amd cold eggs must hv just been put in the fat then picked out they were inedible all slimy and horrid. we movede apptments 3 times due to cockroaches one ran down my arm after i had put a brand new top on just out of the wardrobe staff thought iy was a joke. the whole place should be
bulldozed to the ground. miles from anywhere decent had to catch a bus to find decent food even though we were all inclusive - no starters cold food chips at every meal ice cream for dessert watered down drinks the place is a joke. if it was the last hope of another holiday free of charge forget it.

I arived at Althay apartments mid afternoon on the 7th of January 2009 staying for one week.I never read a single review before booking my holiday and i am so glad that i DID'NT as i may not of gone. This holiday was the best i have ever had and i can honestly say that on the way home we were already planning our return to the Althay Apartments. From the minute we walked in the door, we were made welcome and our every need was cattered for. The room was very spacious on the ground flow and was nice and clean and had house keeping and fresh towels every second day. Everything worked fine and we slept like babys in very comfortable beds. I felt very safe and secure at all times and had no concerns regarding theft. My valubles were on show a lot of the time and nothing was ever touched. The staff were first class in every level. They were friendly and always smiling. They also took great pride in there work especially the kitchen staff who put together one of the best full english and continental breakfast i have ever seen. My partner is also a fully quallified cheff and her standards are very high when it comes to food preperation and hygiene. She was envited in to the kitchen and was very impressed with there standard of cleanleness and pride they took when preparing meals. I never saw the same meal twice in a different form and vegetarians were also very well cattered for. To be honest we hardly ait food at lunch time because we were so full of cakes fruits and sandwiches put on between meals, not forgetting the excellent choice of ice cream available. Three of our evenings were spent at the bar and at around 22.00pm the kitchen staff bring out lovely home made pizza which was absolutly perfect. The bar was free as it should be when fully inclusive. When i say that, i mean every drink was free that was behind the bar not just a certain choice that they keep hidden under the counter. The swimming pool was of an average size and was cleaned along with the sunbeds every morning at 07.30am whilst i was out with my cuppa tea.
Costa calma is a wonderfull quiet location with beautiful beaches and is truely a stunning place to relax and put your feet up and enjoy life. We have had an excellent time and we will always have fond memories of our stay at althay apartments. I am not saying that these people with clearly bad experiences are leaving false reviews but what i am saying is that clearly the place has changed since these earlier reviews and you are going to miss out on an excellent holiday if you take notice of them. We can't wait to get back there again as we have had the time of our lives and it's all thanks to an excellent manager and all his staff at althay apartments.

Booked in a hurry then read reviews and info about resort and apartments, was worried when I read reviews as lots of negative horror stories. We travelled Jan 1st New Years day wondering what we'd find. Things have changed at Althay apartments, problems previously reported seem to have been sorted, our experience was pleasant curtious welcome by reception staff, couldn't have been more helpful, everywhere was clean and better than we expected. There are more apartments than expected but they are basic and adequate as we expected, fridge, pay per view tv with sky news and bbc world news and eurosport not that we watched much tv, shower and bath ok, balcony with view over pool was good. No kettle though, bring a travel kettle for morning cuppa. We came as self catering but upgraded to All Inclusive on a meal by meal basis which gives flexibilty, there's very little choice to eat out and the food in the restaurant was good, sometimes very good, dont expect 4 star but we were more than happy and ate there all the time. Downside is how quiet the resort is, very quiet, not many shops or bars but supermarkets are ok, beach ok and not too far away, we travelled by bus to Morrow Jable approx 30mins 2.40 euros each way, worth seeing for shops and beach. Overall ok.

On the + side
1.the rooms were a good size and there was plenty of storage space.
2. The fridge worked
3. The boiler worked for a nice hot shower
The MINUS side =
1. The pictures on the website DO NOT give a true reflection of this tired and run down complex
2. The safe in our room and others did not have a key.
3. The beds were so lumpy we slept on the floor on the sofa matress instead.
4. The clothes dryer on the balcony was broken
5. The TV was pay per view even in the so called reasturant - 1 euro per hour and we could only find SKY news to watch.
6. The sofa bed was broken in the middle - so both of us could not sit on it at the same time
7. When we had a shower/bath water came up through the floor under the toilet.
8. the shower tiles were black and full of mould.
9. The shower curtain was too short so when we had a shower the floor flooded.
10. The hotel towels were old, worn and had holes in them.
11. The meals were warm and put out onto bain maries that were not switched on properly resulting in the food being cold.
12. Lunch and dinner consisted of CHIPS to go with the "food"!! for the duration of the entire holiday
13. Plates and cutlery was poorly washed and contained remenants of food.
14. The menu was at best Poor and at worst inedible.
15. The deserts Ha Ha. Consisted of Tinned peaches or fruit cocktail every evening.
16. Glasses could not be used to get a drink during the day and coffee cups had to be begged for.
17. Breakfast consisted of almost raw bacon swimming in grease or an assortment of eggs - boiled, scrambled, fried every morning.
18. All external resturants doors Bolted closed to poolside - we had to walk through reception and around the building to get to the poolside.
19. The outdoor pools were very small and looked much, much larger on the photograph.
20. There was nothing to do at night at all - no entertainment, music, lights or anywhere to sit apart from in reception!
21. The pool table was minus half its balls and the white ball as well.
I could go on and on, but would advise if you have not yet booked this hotel, not to bother and to look elsewhere.

i have just returned from these apartments, i just wish i had read all the reviews before i went. on arrival i met a lady who was staying there and warned that there had been a lot of thefts there. that they had sacked a lot of the staff, due to these thefts. i arrived about 22.30. there was nothing to eat, the bar was open till 23.00. there were no snacks at bar as had been quoted in my booking package. room semed ok until cockroaches apeared. therewas ants in kitchen cupboard. breakfast next morning i quite enjoyed as i had nothing to eat since meal on flight. but meals in general were cold, sometimes absolutely disgusting. you had set meal times 8.30-10.00 for breakfast, 13.00-14.30 for lunch, 18.30-20.00 for dinner. there was nowhere for snacks between these times and after 20.00 that was it until breakfast next morning. again not what was stated on booking form. for an all inclusive holiday this was totally unnacceptable. also as i was travelling alone i had paid an extra £170.00 just for the exclusive rights to this wonderful apartment. maid service bed was made, but i had the same towels for seven days. costa calma is lovely but please do not book these apartments

We stayed at the Althay Apartments in August 2008, and find some of the reviews written regarding the accommodation unfair.
We had a top floor apartment, which was clean, spacious and well maintained. Whilst we were there, other guests on the lower floor had problems with cockroaches and found their rooms hot and smelly due to a lack of ventilation. Our room had shutters on the windows which allowed us to air the room, although the bathroom was a bit smelly. I’d recommend emailing the hotel and requesting a first floor room.
The food was disappointing – lunch and dinner were very ‘samey’, and often leftovers from the evening were reheated for lunch the next day. Most of the food was poor quality meat in unappetising sauces – we found ourselves eating chips, potato wedges or onion rings every mealtime! However, in fairness, fresh fruit and salad were always available at mealtimes, alongside ice cream for deserts. Breakfast was much better, with a choice of cereal, toast, croissants, bacon, sausages, eggs and beans. Drinks were good – serve yourself coke, fanta, sprite, beer, wine and sangria, and a barman served spirits.
The pool area was cleaned most days, and there were sufficient sunbeds. The pool was quite small and quite cold though, so it didn’t make for an interesting day.
Costa Calma itself isn’t great – there are a limited number of bars, restaurants and shops due to the underdeveloped nature of the resort. Most days we caught the local bus (which cost 2.40euro per person) to Morro Jable and Jandia, which have much more pleasant surroundings, including a harbour and more shops. There is also an English bar in Jandia showing live football on Saturday afternoons for those travelling with fans!
Some of the beaches in this part of the Island are fantastic – the World Windsurfing Championships were held whilst we were staying and it made for good viewing. The beaches are vast and so never crowded, especially if you stray off the beaten track. Take a windbreak though – it stings when the sand is carried on the wind into the back of your legs!
Overall, we wouldn’t recommend staying in the Althay Apartments or Costa Calma. Although the apartments were clean and pleasant, the food served in the restaurant really lets it down. If we were to return to the island, we would stay in Jandia or Morro Jable.
