After a tough year I decided to treat myself and just decided on a whim to go to Barcelona. Don't know why.
I was having real troubles finding cost effective accommodation as I didn't want to spend loads. Then the tour operator I used suggested staying in a hostel, which I’d never done before. I wasn't keen initially as I had ideas that they were usually crumby places to stay, plus I had watched the movie only two nights before.
So Hostel Lami was the one I went with. Forget any dusty old myths of hostels, this place is a real treat.
First off, the staff all speak English very well, they wear nice suits and are extremely polite and helpful. They knew exactly who I was when I arrived and were very welcoming. When I went off to the main centre of Barcelona they provided me with maps and took time to explain where to go and where not to go (especially at night). I felt they couldn't have done enough for me. The room was clean, air conditioned and quiet. The bathroom is shiny, white and clean and you get a little TV thrown in for good measure too.
It is perfectly located near cafes and bars, all of which I had either breakfast or dinner at. My experience though was that none of them spoke English despite what the adverts say so go prepared.
The trams and buses are literally 3 minutes walk away from the hostel. I would take the tram though as it's quicker and buses get caught in traffic.
Finally, hostel Lami is located in a nice, quiet suburb of Barcelona which has a beautiful park nearby.

GOOD POINTS:
For basic board this hostal can do no wrong:
*friendly staff
*reception open 24hrs
*clean
*room is cleaned everyday with fresh new towels
*quiet, relaxed superb with some cafe/bars
*not many tourists nice to mix with the locals
Its classed as a hostal but it’s just a very basic hotel (not many hostals would clean everyday and bring fresh towels!
BAD POINTS:
TOO FAR AWAY FROM CENTRE! (Hence the 5/5 rating).
*If you're wanting to be where the action is this is not the place to be. It’s a chore to get the bus/metro into the centre especially if you're out late (unfortunately the Flight Centre was not clear on how far Esplugues actually is from the centre).
*during the day it would take around 25-30 mins allowing for traffic
*the night bus can be longer as it has to go via a few places
*One thing is that we had trouble getting a taxi from the Hostel to the airport, the guy at reception was either told the taxi won't go there or they didn't turn up.
If distance doesn't bother you and want to experience a chilled out town away from the hustle and bustle of the city and cheap and cheerful is on the menu then I'd advise this place.
