All inclusive?

Having sampled an all inclusive holiday in Mexico, I thought we’d try it closer to home. My review date is not 2005, but 2004. I appreciate a bit long in coming, but from the recent reviews it seems little has changed from my visit.

Having arrived from the airport with 20 mins to spare before the end of the evening meal, I ordered two drinks from the bar to be told they weren't on the all inclusive list. Then followed the first in a number of memorable meals at the hotel.
Not memorable because of the excellent quality and variety, but memorable for the lack of variety, colour and imagination.
If you feel you should be in rehab, this is the place to go. A good 20minute off the main road and the hotel resembling a scene from a Hitchcock movie, it’s first impressions is one of ‘it can’t be that bad’ were soon proved wrong.
Same old, same old food daily with cold fried eggs in the morning with the usual array of cold meats, cheeses and bread did mean that if you picked carefully that it was possible to stock up for a while.
Lunches were a bit hit and miss, with the poor old platter of French fries taking a hit every time, the remaining dishes were insipid and bland with the odd acceptable one put in to throw you.
Dinner, the high light of the visit was jelly (jello) for desert which was hardly touched until someone introduced a tin of mixed fruit cocktail to it and guests descended on it like a gift from the gods, almost a reward for putting up with everything else.
Bar staff who would question you as to why you were ordering drinks in volume and not individually in small beer glasses only added to the warmth and charm that failed to exude form this dreary establishment.
Dirty rooms, trip hazards across stairs, a high voltage electricity cable which passed ‘over’ the swimming pool all added to the local charm and delights of the stay here.
Other guests who hadn’t hired cars complained of the apparent lack of transport, the promised entertainment never materialised until some poor Greek singer was wheeled in to keep the guests at bay with some hastily organised sing song. She tried hard but by then our spirit had been broken.

If being pampered in an all inclusive holiday is your game, try Mexico.

If you want the feeling of isolation, being neglected, food resembling that of Her Majesties Prison establishments and you have to eat out to have some variety, you’ll love it here.
Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been to Greece a number of times and love the place, the people and the food, but this was just purgatory.

This hotel is run by Russians who neither speak nor have any time for the British. To emphasise this all other guests received red wristbands but the British are given blue ones. All the staff are either Albanian or from other Balkan countries so do not know anything about the surrounding area.
The food is the same everyday with the leftovers from the previous day ending up in either the scrambled egg for breakfast or the rice for lunch/dinner. There is no choice but to eat at this hotel, as it is so remote the next village is an hour and a half away by foot. If you dare venture out alone by taxi you are not guaranteed that you will find one to bring you back. The view from the hotel is absolutely wonderful but there is more to going on holiday than the scenery as to our dismay we found out this week!

Set in a peaceful location with stunning views. This hotel has all the attributes for a wonderful holiday. However, it seems they have little experience of how to run an all-inclusive holiday. Drinks are of a very limited selection - check your all inclusive DOES INCLUDE BEER throughout the day, not only at mealtimes. Food buffet style but repetitive and uninteresting - certainly no mousakka here but the vine leaves are excellent - complements to the chef - but you get them for every meal! Although we travelled without children it was obvious that the catering was not suitable for youngsters and with jelly as the only sweet provided every day, both for lunch and evening meals and only two flavours - not even a squirt of cream or ice cream - lots of clients were more than happy to eat out but you had to have available transport as the hotel is quite remote.
There is a taverna nearby (Yianis) and they sell mythos beer considerably cheaper than the hotels equivalent. A hire car is a necessity if you want to escape - hire it in the UK before you leave this will save you money! There is no entertainment apart from a Greek night if you are lucky and if it does happen while you are there it is enjoyable. The area of Sithonia is beautiful albeit very underdeveloped (which is part of it’s charm) and is well worth travelling around. We took a boat trip to see Mount Athos - there are a number of boats that do the trip from 500 seaters down to a 20-seat boat, that latter of which we shared with only 7 other people. During the trip you are taken to an island where you are directed to a taverna on the beach - note that there are other tavernas on the other side - about a 10 minute very hilly walk so you should check these out before committing to the first one (which was adequate, but not special). For shops go to Kalithea on Kassandra for best village we loved Sarti.
Having done this review we only paid £180 for an all-inclusive holiday that we treated as a bed & breakfast with the added bonus of free drink in the evenings. Certainly a relaxing week’s holiday if you don’t expect too much.
