9 / 10
May 2007, Mrs L Scott

My husband took me to Smiths for our second wedding anniversary for a quiet romantic break; we just stayed 1 night bed and breakfast but dined in the restaurant in the evening. The food was beautifully presented and was overall delicious. At first I thought the menu was... more

Our Wedding
Steve and I got married in Gretna Green on 1st February 2007 and we stayed at Smiths for 5 nights.............What a truly lovely time we had. Apart from the lovely wedding, which was held at the Blacksmiths Cottage, we had our meal (reception) at Smiths and the staff couldnt have been more accomodating even tho we didnt book it as a 'proper' wedding reception. We had an executive room with a balcony and couldnt have asked for more. It was wonderful. Beautifully designed hotel, very contemporary, very swish and just what I wanted. I am soooooo pleased we stayed there and wouldnt have changed the whole experience for the world. Thank you so much to all the staff at Smiths, you done us proud. In fact I'm just about to write a thankyou note to them, I was that chuffed. Lx
£15 internet charge spoils a nice hotel
I stayed at this hotel because it is conveniently at the top of the M6, and judging by the number of other businessmen in there I was not alone in that choice. The hotel is modern, clean and excellent with large rooms with well lit working area and nicely maintained bathroom. Tea/coffee, sitting area and big bed makes a refreshing change.and very nice indeed. The restaurant was good too. A £15 per day internet charge which they claim is 'modest' spoiled what would otherwise have been a first class modern hotel. Quite how that is justified when when cheaper hotels like HI Express and Travel Inn manage it for free I am not sure.
Management response from smiths-gretnagreen 11 Feb 2007

Thank you for your comments regarding the internet charge. We currently make a charge to offset some of the cost associated with offering a broadband service. As with every part of our operation, we will respond to comment by reviewing what we do, and will be discussing this at the next (imminent) Board Meeting. In the meantime, thank you again for your comments and I hope it doesn't put you off vstaying with us again soon!

Simply the Best
My wife and I recently got married at Gretna Green and ourselves and our guests stayed at this hotel. I have never felt compelled to write such a review and could go on for ever in describing how wonderful a hotel this is. Everthing about the Hotel is top class. If your going to Gretna, book into this hotel and enjoy it as much as we all did.
Loved Smiths at Gretna
We originally were married at Gretna Green and stayed in this hotel for our anniversary in November 2006. Absolutely loved it! Stafff were really friendly. We had a family room with bunk beds and the children were able to watch dvd's in their beds. They thought it was great. Room was lovely and clean, bed was extremely comfortable. We ate in the restaurant and thought the food was excellent and they did a childrens menu and with two extremely fussy eaters, still managed to get them something they liked. Overall we all really enjoyed our two night stay in this hotel and would stay there again.
fantastic hotel
Fantastic Hotle, great for children, the rooms were really comfortable and roomy. the bunk beds were especially great with the televisions and dvd link up. the food was excellent and the bar area exceeded all expectations. Staff were very accomadating and friendly. Would recommend to anyone that would like a relaxing break.
Convenient & Classy
I wish more hotels were like this! This hotel has managed to combine character with modern convenience, which is a breath of fresh air. As a Londoner I have to admit I was shocked at how stylish the hotel is with Fiber lighting, stone and leather in an open plan setting. Our Executive Room also had its own fire place (flame effect), flat screen telis, etc. I stayed in the hotel with my wife and 15 month year old because we got caught in traffic on the way to Glasgow whilst on a combined business/pleasure trip. The hotel is very conveniently located just off the start of the M74 well out of the traffic of Carlisle. I was able to make use of their broadband to access my work emails and have a very enjoyable evening with my wife as they were able to provide a local baby sitter on the night - great or what! We set off to Glasgow early the next morning feeling refreshed and got there in an hour & a half, well early for my appointment. I'll definitely be using the hotel again as a stop off and even got to see one of the penthouse suites which were amazing glass boxes set on the top of the Hotel - looked great for a party. We just had bar snacks, which were very nice and the bar staff were very accomodating. It's also worth noting that I've stopped off here before, which is when I noticed the hotel, and the "Smithy" next door sell great Scottish fare and the outlet center on the other side of the motorway sells very cheap designer clothes.
worst hotel ever
This is the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. it is boring motel style on the side of a motorway and charges exclusive prices. We pre arranged to have our room two hours early, it was not ready even an hour and a half after our arrival. We had to change for the wedding in the bathroom. When the room was finally ready the heating didn t work. The food at the reception was basic and two people didn't get dessert. Service at the meal was rude. Service in the bar was incredibly slow. A round of four drinks tooks twenty five minutes to get, two of the drinks were wrong and we were overcharged. They refused to correct the order. The staff were not just unhelpful they were downright rude. They do not rely on repeat custom and so treat guests with no respect. I could only recommend this hotel if you dislike your family and friends and want them overcharged, and treated with disrespect then book here, they'll not forgive you quickly.
Snooty Waiting Staff
We stayed here the night of our wedding and were quite disappointed with the service in the restaurant. In attendance was our two and a half year old daughter, our friends acting as witnesses and their young family. The Accomodation was very nice but the restaurant service was shocking. Staff never took us on and put us in the far corner of the room. Four times i had to call over for drinks and forgotten food orders. We waited over an hour for our meal and they kept giving us dirty looks because the children were getting restless!! the cheek! No eye contact or nothing when serving and the plates were practically thrown down on the table. the prices were well over the top. not kiddie friendly at all - even though they have good family rooms in the hotel. probably wouldn't take my daughter back. they even gave the kids lollipops before the main course without asking us parents in an attempt to keep them quiet. boo
Fantastic hotel
We stayed here last weekend for our wedding and we had a lovely time. We only booked standard rooms, but they were lovely. The bar staff were really friendly and even bought us a round of drinks to congratulate us. Only slight problem was that restaurant was fully booked that night and we had to eat in our room. So book restaurant early!!
Lovely Hotel
We stayed here in at the end of July for a wedding. What a lovely hotel - it's a shame more hotels in Britain weren't up to this standard.... We took the 2 kids with us (2 & 4) and we booked into a family room - this wasn't the usual couple of fold out beds but a bunk bed built into an alcove, separate from the room - each bunk has a 14" TV built into the wall so the kids can watch their own TV or DVD! The hotel has it's own babysitting service - we booked it from 8pm to midnight but the kids were still bouncing off the walls at 8pm so we asked the babysitter if she was OK to wait (obviously we would pay her etc) - it turns out that she's a friend of the hotel owners and lives just down the road so she told us to just ring when we were ready - she was lovely & the kids took to her straight away and according to her were no trouble at all. The staff were polite, helpful and extremely friendly. The rooms - flat screen tv, dvd, power showers etc were fantastic. All in all, couldn't have asked for anything better - and just across the road from the Anvil as well!
