Average Food, Very Loud
from TheHoss
I took my girlfriend here for the weekend to see the wonderful sites of bath. The location was literally a 10metre walk from the train station which meant there was a lot of traffic outside and thus was very hard to get any sleep at all as the windows were not double glazed and you could hear everyhting outside. I wouldn't recommend this place if you want piece and quiet. We woke up to one of the worst breakfasts we've ever had. Bacon and eggs were barley cooked and the service was terrible - then again the breakfast was included so I guess that puts meaning to the saying - 'theres no such thing as a free lunch'. If I went to Bath again I would stay a little closer to the restaurants where you can enjoy a very nice breakfast or dinner for half the price than the Royal hotel was offering. To add to the nightware we paid £130 for the night - the worst £130 I've ever spent. Theres plenty of really nice and affordable places to stay in Bath. This isn't one of them.
Good hotel with good service
from alan9pr
Pleasant hotel which is having some refurbishment work going on. My room had been completed and was of a good standard, especially the bathroom. The hotel is opposite the railway station, which is has it's advantages and disadvantages such as traffic. It also very close to the centre, but also opposite a major redevelopment of shops. The work that was ongoing did not cause any issues, and this hotel will benefit when complete. I took the opportunity to eat in the hotels restaurant and had an excellent meal. Overall a good stay and good service, would stay again.
Food great

Came to Bath to celebrate My mothers 75th birthday which I specified on teh booking form-needed spacious and quiet twin room. On arrival was given room overlooking main road and was very cramped. Able to move to a much better room. Very short distance to shops and Christmas market which was worthwhile as Mum cant walk far. Food in restuarant excellent and the vast majority of waitressess were extrememly helpful and polite. We were however suprised that redecoration was taking place as such a busy time of the year so came out of our bedroom to peeled off wall paper and mess on our floor. Lift also very small and we were lucky that we seemed to use it at quieter times. Our bedroom shower had a leak which managed to cause problems in the room below but this was very quickly rectified. Car parking is hit and miss and we were grateful that we found a spot in the station car park opposite at £7,50 per day. On the whole, good stay with excellent food in an easy situation and my Mum loved her birthday treat.
Marvellous hotel for the money
from Lynda51
My husband and I wanted to spend a few days in Bath visiting our youngest son who is working there on a one year industrial placement as part of his university degree. My husband chose to stay at the Royal Hotel because they had a special deal on for short breaks - £45.00 per night per person for bed, breakfast and evening meal. As we were also travelling down by train it seemed easier to have a hotel nearer the station. I was very sceptical about the hotel - I had heard that Bath could be expensive and didn't believe anything that reasonable could be very good. We had had a difficult rail journey down to Bath and as we walked out of the station I was pleasantly surprised to see that the hotel was just across the road and we had finally arrived there - two hours later than anticipated. The reception staff were very friendly and our second surprise was how lovely our room was. It had recently been refurbished and the smell of new carpet greeted us as we opened the door. In fact I have to say the whole hotel had a lovely fresh, clean smell about it. We also saw signs on all the doors leading to the bedrooms to say it was a non-smoking establishment and anyone found smoking in one of the rooms would have to pay £100 for the cost of deoderising the room. As we are non-smokers we really appreciated that. After we had unpacked we walked into Bath - only a short five minute walk - and had a good look at the locations of various attractions and the shops. Our dinner that evening was already paid for in our package but we had invited our son to join us which the hotel were happy to accommodate. A three course meal for our son was £17.50 which he thoroughly enjoyed. I have to say the meals were excellent. The food was delicious and the presentation faultless. The staff in the restaurant were very friendly, helpful and efficient. Breakfast the following morning was just as good and plentiful. The choice of dishes was staggering - not just the standard full English breakfast but smoked haddock and poached egg, smoked salmon and scrambled egg etc. as well as a table laden with a superb choice of cereals, fruit, yoghurts, cold meats, croissants, grapefruit, prunes and juices. We asked our son if he would like to come to our hotel again the next evening for a meal - he jumped at the chance without a moment's hesitation. Again we had another marvellous meal. Our room was at the back of the hotel and we didn't have any problems with noise disturbance even though we had our window open all night. The bed was also very comfortable. The bathroom had also been recently refurbished and was very clean. I have to say that everywhere was certainly very clean and the bedding very crisp and clean. My husband is very fussy about cleanliness in hotel rooms/bathrooms but didn't have a problem here at all. We are going back to Bath in the Spring as we didn't visit all the attractions we wanted to and will certainly return to The Royal. We have made a note of our room number and will ask for the same room again. The Bath City tour bus stops right outside the hotel which couldn't be more convenient . All in all it was a lovely break in an excellent hotel and I have to complement my husband on his choice of hotel even if it was based on purely financial reasons!
We liked it!

My husband had booked this hotel and I had been a bit worried when I read a few of the reviews here. This was for our 10 year wedding anniversary, and we wanted 2 nights in Bath. I called them a few days beforehand to ask if they could put champagne and chocolates in the room for our arrival. I also asked if there was flexibility in what room we had if we could have an especially nice one for the occasion. They were very nice on the phone. When we got there I was struck by how more modern it was in comparison to some reviews. The decor for the most part is fresh and modern. We went to our room and it was just lovely. The bathroom was very nice. No bath just a shower, but a proper shower..no trickling tempermental water system. The champagne and chocs were there. A perfect start! We ate out on the first night but decided to eat in on the 2nd, as the rugby was on and we wanted to watch it. The meal was very good. I had ciabatta with olive oil and olives. DH had crispy duck to start. We both had steak for main. They specialise in steaks. Then my husband had a pecan tart for dessert, which he loved. There was a free bottle of wine also because we were residents (supposedly for 1st nights stay). It was all helped by the fact that the restaurant staff were so pleasant, really friendly. On the food note too, the breakfasts were good. There is a great selection of cooked and normal breakfast fayre. The two bars are favourable, one seems more a local/sports bar. Being Irish I felt at home, and everyone was nice, even during the rugby, only one arrogant fan. The larger bar area is very nicely decorated and we sat in there a few times for a drink If there were any drawbacks I would say the noise from the station area was a bit annoying on the saturday night but since it was rugby world cup night we expected that. The windows are old sash, so noise is not kept out much at all. But we went there expecting that (due to the reviews here) and so it was fine. I did not lie awake, for long! Our bed was made up of 2 singles pushed together, not zipped, just a sheet over the mattresses. Again just a small thing but we had ordered a double and I had said it was our wedding anniversary!! All in all I think the hotel is good value. We paid £180 for 2 nights B&B. It is a great location for seeing round Bath. I would go back again.
A Gem in the Making
from NaplesFL9
During a visit to England , we planned a trip to Bath and spent two nights at the Royal Hotel last week. We were completely blown away by the experience. The room and spacious bath had recently been renovated and the entire hotel appeared to be getting similar updates. The furnishings were very comfortable and our room had many extra amenities (robe, slippers, mints, bath toiletries). The hotel staff was very friendly and professional and could not do enough to make us feel welcome and appreciated. But an extra plus to our stay was the hotel restaurant. Having arrived late on a rainy night, we decided not to venture out to look for a place to dine. We were so impressed by the menu offerings, wines, value and high quality of the meal and service we enjoyed, we chose to return for dinner on our second night. And breakfast (part of the package) was bountiful, hot and also accompanied by individual attention from a caring waitstaff. The area around the hotel is under a massive downtown redevelopment and that will only add to it's terrific central city location. Being only minutes from the Bath Abbey, Roman Baths, on/off bus tour stop and rail line makes this a gem now, and more so in the future. We'll be back.
Comfy and Quaint
from ChicagoFruitSalad
It was a very quick stay at the hotel, but a very comfortable one. The hotel is just across the street from the train station which made life easy with three suitcases! It is about a five minute walk into the town. The hotel is a little old so don't expect shiny fixtures in the bathroom, but it was clean - and I am picky about cleanliness of hotels! I would stay here again and I would recommend it for a short stay in bath.
Small Rooms
from 65BlueSky
Small hotel across the street from train station. Received room with twin beds on corner so room was a decent size. Other rooms are painfully small. NO A/C! Rooms do have at least 1 window for air, but the train station makes it noisy in the mornings. Bathrooms have shower stall. Nice restaurant.
Good location, OK but a little overpriced
from Leanne_S
I had a work event in Bath and stayed at this hotel for one night. The location was right opposite the station and was 5 minutes walk from the lovely centre of Bath. The staff were friendly, the rooms were clean but the corridor was a bit grubby and smelled musty. My room was quite spacious and comfortable, although my colleague's was quite a bit smaller. The hotel has a old fashioned feel, so it felt a bit like staying at Grandma's house - which was quite nice and cosy! I stayed at the front of the hotel opposite the station and had both my windows open all night. I didn't find a problem with noise except around 7 when I woke up and couldn't get back to sleep!! The breakfast was nice, full english and also a buffet with cereals/pastries etc. All in all it was OK, but not worth 80-100 per night. Maybe around 60-70 would be more appropriate. L x
a bit of a let down
from charlotteKent
i was really looking forward to my stay in bath but was a little let down by this hotel. for £100 a night i expected alot more. if the hotel had been more reasonably priced it would have been satisfactory. the overall feel of the place is rather run down and unloved. the most annoying thing was that our room was on a slope so my husband and i had to sleep the wrong way round in bed so as to avoid a rush of blood to the head! the bed was also too short. the bars are a little quiet and seedy. the sports bar is actually a room with a couple of tvs showing sport. before booking i was aware that the hotel was right by the bus depot and train station so expected some noise but if you leave your bedroom window open at night (which can be necessary as rooms are stuffy) the noise is actually unbearable. this should have been taken into account when pricing the rooms. i must say however that the breakfasts were good and the buffet plentiful. overall this hotel needs to bring down its prices and give everything a good freshening up. a real shame as bath is such a beautiful city.

Hotel grudgingly allowed a 1 night only stay on Sat night, at very late twin room rate of £80 BB. Beds comfortable and rooms spotless. Rooms dark, hot and quite shabby. Bathrooms very outdated; over bath shower ancient. Lounge and restaurant nicely decorated with period... more
