Family Vacation for the 'Budget Travelers'
from mygr8life
Stayed here for one week in May 2007. Two weeks would have been too much for us. The drive from the airport was about 45 minutes. The staff was very friendly and everyone spoke a number of languages. The rooms were clean and spacious. We switched to a beachfront bungalow free of cost after only a few days. It was a little too loud in the hotel for our sleep-sensitive baby. We were really looking forward to some good Greek food and I think that was the only real disappointment. The food was not great but it was not bad either. There is a fast food restaurant across the street but we found that was more of the same. We were impressed with the pricing of food and drinks. The mini market on the grounds was reasonable as was the pool bar. I always expect to get squeezed when at a resort. Of course the ‘super market’ down the street from the grounds is even more reasonable. Never did we feel ‘ripped off’ though. Try to bargain shop a little when looking for souvenirs, price varies greatly. Bring lot’s of cash. There is no ATM in Gerakina. You need to go to the next largest town (Poligros) and that is a bus ride away. Credit cards are accepted outside of the resort but not within. There are a couple of nice bars and restaurants across the street, all reasonably priced. Lots of other children for your little one to play with and plenty of space for them to run. The beach was very nice but the lady in charge of the chairs (Russian speaking only) was a little crazy. Do not think you can take a little of the shade thrown off of one of the umbrellas onto the sand, you must pay for that (€3.00 for one chair or €7.00 for 2?). The water is amazing! We loved floating all day. The pools were kept fresh, clean, and cold. Weather was gorgeous and HOT! We did have a really bad experience with the Doctor on staff. She could not speak English (or Latin?! I am still puzzled over that.) very well. She studied in Russia and spoke Russian and Greek. She had no idea what to do with a child. I was so mad, I just took his temp and checked his throat and ears myself using her things! She seemed relieved. She still wanted €50.00 on top of our traveler and EU insurance. All in all, it was a great ‘budget’ family vacation.
fantastic holiday

we stayed in the Gerikina Beach bungalows during the last two weeks of July 2006. the bungalows are in fact small two story blocks set amongst beautiful olive trees and gardens. we were on the ground floor. the rooms them selves are quite basic but very clean with plenty of towels and daily maid service. we are a family of four and our room consisted of a bathroom, and open plan bedroom with a double bed and two singles( one more of a put me up) The bath had a shower head over the taps but not attached to the wall which made showering fun and a little messy. also be warned that the hot water can be boiling so beware. the wardrobe space is a little crampt when four people are sharing and i would advise that you take plenty of coat hangers with you. the fridge is brilliant a good size and very cold. the air conditioning is really good too. the patio doors opened onto a slabbed area with chairs and a table and there was loads of room for the children (and adults) to run around and play on the grassed area outside. The beach was perfect, just a short walk at the bottom of the gardens with clear shallow waters. perfect for snorkelling. all we saw of our son all day was his snorkel and bottom in the air. the sands are quite narrow which is brilliant as the sun beds are in single file and you dont get people running past you showering you with sand to get to the sea. we had two beds and an umbrella every day that cost us 7 euros. we later found out that you can book them for the week at a reduced rate. the beach bar was very reasonable with a good choice of menu. we ate thier every day costing us around 15 euros. the pool was looked after and kept very clean by George; we enjoyed the aqua aerobics every day. and in the evening its all lit up with tables and chairs around the edge so you can relax and have a drink over looking the sea. the restaurant was fantastic. there were eight of us in our party and they reserved a table for us every day so we could all sit together. the staf were lovely and the food was wonderful (hence the 10lbs gained in two weeks!!) the entertainment was good with things going on through the day and shows in the evening. there are a handfull of shops to look around outside of the hotel grounds and some lovely bars to sit at and have a cold drink (cheeper than the hotel) we had a wonderful time and would definitely return.

I took a chance and travelled with my son and daughter aged 16 & 8. We had a fantastic time. The rooms were cleaned daily, the staff were very helpful and the resort was kept spotless at all times. It was an international resort and we really felt that we were on holiday. My daughter loved the childrens entertainment and we were so very sad to come home. We could have stayed forever. The food in the restaurant was varied and there was plenty of choice, the restaurant staff worked very hard and they were all polite and helpful. I booked this holiday feeling very apprehensive as I was travelling as a single parent, I felt totally safe at this resort. It was a beautful place and I am so looking forward to going back again very soon.
Greek vacation

We had a lot of rain, but on the day that there was flooding, the staff had breakfast at 7:30 as usual, even though in some of the rooms there was 20 cm of water. Buffets were much better than ones we have seen in Greece. Rooms nice. Excursions and local bus connections. We are recommending it!
Absolutely brilliant!

I really enjoyed my 2 week holiday at Gerakina. There is an extensive activity program, which was really enjoyable. There were activities for all ages. The entertainment staff were really nice and made the holiday what it was. The grounds of the hotel are beautiful and the beach is absolutely gorgeous. The hotel is remote so if you want shops or clubs i would not reccommend this hotel. The nearest town is a market town with a large market on a Wednesday. We were warned off the bus service into the town, but we were really really impressed. The bus was actually an air conditioned coach which turned up on time and was inexpensive. At the market town there was an air conditioned bus station with facilities to wait for the bus for your return journey. We were very impressed. The food at the hotel, was of a good quality. The meat was often pork aswell as one other meat which got quite boring, however there was so much choice that this did not really matter. The transfer time from the hotel is only about an hour which is great if you have children. If you plan to go to this hotel I expect that you will have a really enjoyable time if you want to relax and participate in the activities provided.

Well what can I say this hotel is fantastic theres evrything for all age groups, the kids will love it theres so much to do, the staff are great and the rooms are so clean and the food is excellent. I may be a bit bias as I have been going here for the past 17 years with my family and I grew up with most of the hotel staff or/and their children so its home from home to me really . Im now 20 years old and I still love going. SO go its brilliant you'll feel so welcome and relaxed

We went to in Sept 04 for 2 weeks and had a fantastic relaxing holiday. We were placed in 2 bungaloes as we have six kids and both rooms were next to each other. The rooms were cleaned spotless every day and the meals were fantastic . Breakfast was different to what we have at home but this is a holiday so a change was welcome . Evening meals were really great. The gardens were fantastic and the kids loved playing in them . Night entertainment was good and catered for everyone. There is plenty to do all day long so and enough food for everyone, It is in the middle of no where which made it even better and safe and quiet for the kids . There are a few shops and restaurants within walking distance. The staff were helpfull and really made you feel welcome. Everywhere was kept clean and tidy which made it even more enjoyable . It was such a nice place to be for 2 weeks and well worth the money. In fact is was so nice we are going end of may 05 for 2 weeks. Money well spent !!!! Contact me if you want to view photos there are too many to place

Stayed end June 04 On first impressions, I really didn't like it! We were in a bungalow which should not have been graded anything near a three star, but the room itself was the worst part of the compelx. We were surprised not to have a bath in the room and a kettle. This made travelling with a baby quite difficult. Eventually, we got moved to an equally basic room but it did have a bath. No TV, not even a power point to have one set up, but a bath! To be fair though, the rooms were cleaned every day and we had no problems with getting fresh towels and linen. It seemed a lot of the British were put in the bungalows!? The more i walked around the complex the more it grew on me. The grounds were lovely and very peaceful. The beach was not the best but not too overcrowded. The swimming pool was right near to the beach. Great pool but i think we counted 25 sunbeds which is supposed to cater for the whole hotel!! The pool didn't open until 10am so a que formed everyday at about 9.30am. Regarding meals, the breakfasts in my opinion were awful and not catered to British tastes at all. The only fruit was tinned peaches and the toaster was only out every other day! However, the meals in the evening were okay. Not fantastic, but fairly tasty. They had several vegetaritan options too. The location of the restaurant is wonderful. In general, we found the staff to be very nice and helpful. The restaurant staff were very efficent and nice. The animation team were quite good. Lots going on, especially for kids. Would i go back? No is the answer. I'd rather pay the extra and get somewhere with a bit more luxury and be located on a nicer part of the coastline. However, a holiday is what you make it so don't be too disheartened if you read this and have booked the Gerakina already. We hired a car for several days, got out and about as much as possible and enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. We had fantastic weather and i guess you get used to the basic room after a while!!
could not wait to leave

Try to avoid the last weeks of the summer season. The restaurant staff, maids, bar staff and wartersport attendants were tried and worn out and did not try to hide the fact. The choice of food was the same each day very poor. The rooms were cleaned half heartedly. Not all warter sports avaliable as broken, again same comment end of season. The beach is good, alot of jelly fish, use the sun beds to the left of the beach bar. The hand full of shops, restarants and bars as mentioned in Thomson summer sun 2003, 90% shut or had they ever been opened, as in most of the other resorts, as we found on our travels. A car is a must, Hertz in the hotel gave very good sevice, value for money and most helpfull. Hotel grounds very pleasant and well maintained . Young children seemed to enjoy the hotels kids program in the evening, although not thrilling for adult entertainment. Would i go back ? no not even if the holiday were free, shame as the position of the hotel is second to none.
Gerakina beach is as good as you can expect for money spent. However the beach was disappointing. There is one guy who expect you to come to him to pay for a key to unlock sunbeds and umbrellas which are, I fool you not, chained and locked. At the end of the day you are... more
