Hotel Gotico Reviews

This is a great little hotel. Location is excellent. Right in the centre of Barcelona, with only a short walk to La Rambla, and very close to a tube station so that you can get anywhere you want to go very easily. The hotel itself is very clean and well presented. The... more

Avoid this Hotel
The location is good but everything else is a total nightmare. The staff is tottaly unproffessional, the rooms and corridors have an awfull smell,...; in a simple word, please avoid it.
Bypass this awfull hotel!!!
The location of the hotel is very good, but unfortunatelly that is all the good news! We stayed two nights while on a 16 day tour of Spain and the room we were assigned was just slightly larger than the closet. The room fixtures were in very poor shape as were the bathroom faucets. And in spite of it being unusually warm in Spain this Fall, the AC was out of service because "it is winter now". Walk a bit further and find a cleaner and better place. For what we paid we could have done a lot better.
Gotico Hotel great location but the hotel is awful
Just returned from 4 night break in this fantastic city. Everything was great except the hotel - it was dreadful. Grubby, dingy room. Tiny window that looked out onto a flat roof above the dining room. Holes in curtains. The linen and towels had seen better days but were at least clean. Air conditioning that didn't work and an indifferent attitude from staff. No public rooms with exception of the reception area that appeared to double as a residents lounge and small bar The breakfast was awful and the dining room staff even worse. The hotel needs to be completely refurbished and staff need to be trained in the art of at least pretending they enjoy providing a service to their paying guests. Worst 4 star hotel we have stayed at couldn't wait to leave. It spoiled an otherwise brilliant weekend.
Great location, but a bit too gothic
Found the room a bit dark and dingy- only one lamp was used to light the entire bedroom part. The window was also small. But our problems were mainly with the electrics and then the staff at reception. The bulb lighting the room broke on the second day and also tripped the fuse box which meant we were in darkness. I went to the reception and told them- after a struggle with the language barrier a man came to help. He fiddled with the fuse box and replaced the bulb; which blew for a second time! He then left us in darkness and promised he would be back soon. He never came despite us phoning reception again. We therefore spent one night in darkness and could not even see to use the bathroom. Actually, the cleaners were excellent and tidied the room better than we expected, we decided that they had probably fixed the buld for us the next day! However, we came to use the minibar in our room and found this to be broken. We reported every time we went through reception (upto 4 times a day) and they always promised they would look at it. On three ocasions the receptionists came took look. But each time the only changed the socket into which it was plugged. This was not the problem and we struggled to exlplain this too them. Finally, on the second to last night (we were only there for 6!), the fuse went again. Only this time it was more serious because it effected the power on the whole floor. The receptionist eventually rang for an electrician. Again, the bathroom and bedroom were too dark to use. Im sure you will be pleased to know that the electrician did come and fix the problem as well as the minibar fridge. Amusingly, after he went we found we could turn the TV on and off using the same switch to turn the light on in the main room. Very dodgy. We found the location of the hotel to be perfect. Its right in the gothic quarter so that it had quick access to many attractions including the Picasso museum. Les Rambles (a busy street with good night life) was also very close. If you want to make regular trips to the beach then this probably isn't the place for you. However, there is an underground station dead close wich we used for the duration of the holiday. This was ample for our needs. One word of warning however-- My girlfriend got her bag snatched from her hand as we walked back along the main street to the hotel (at 2am). Pick pockets are bad everywhere in Bcn so DO NOT think that the problem was the position of the hotel. Luckily I chased the thief down the winding side streets and managed to get the bag back. If you need a bag then wear it around your neck and keep the minimum cash etc.. on you.
great location, very large room
We stayed for four nights at this hotel with two of our children (ages 2 and 5). We ordered a triple with a baby cot in the room, and were afraid of finding ourselves in a small room with no place to put down the suitcases, as sometime happens in Europe. Eventually, we received something that I would call a mini suite, comprised of two spacious rooms, a very large toilet room and a very large bath room. The room where the beds were was roomy enough for all of us (and for the children to arrange running contests...). Breakfast is a large buffet with something for every one (and not a continental as I read in one of the reviews here!). We were surprised to see some of the poor reviews here, and I am happy I didnt see them before we went there. True, the 4 star rate is somewhat questionable, but the stay was a smash because of the location, which is unbeatable and because of the room which was a big success.
Lovely Friendly Place
We had a lovely stay here! Staff lovely, location great, hotel clean and rooms fine.
Should be called Gotta go!
Disgusting, moldy, mildew smell throughout. Rooms are the size of a shoebox. Staff is unproffessional and act as though they have never heard these complaints before. Cigarette burn in the toilet seat. Left immediately and found the Majestic, which is lovely.
No problems at the Gotico
Having read some posts on this thread I was some what apprehensive about booking in however I needn't have worried. The hotel is clean and tidy and the staff helpful. It is positioned well within walking distance of the must see sights just off the Ramblas. I was with a group of females and we walked around the area at night with no more fear than i would walking around in the uk in the early hours. There was slight road noise but it is a hotel in the middle of a capital city so you would expect that but we had a lovely little balcony from which we could watch Spain go by - that is after all why we went there!!!! Breakfast was acceptable with a wide range of things to suit all nationalities and there was enough to more that keep us going till lunch time. All in all if you want a tidy hotel in the middle of things then book the Gotico as it will leave you with more money to spend on the open top bus tour which is also well recommended. I would not hesitate to book this hotel again
gotico was brilliant
we stayed at the gotico just before xmas 2004 where we took our 10 year old. we had a triple room and i was abit dubious after reading the bad reviews but i would recommend it and stay there again. the staff were most helpful and friendly and even after we checked out looked after our baggage so we could look round the town. our room faced the front and while some say its noisy i say its really getting into the buzz of things. we had a lovely balcony the room was cosy and clean and everything was there. it was right in the heart of this wonderful city and right opposite is a lovely little cafe for morning coffee. all 3 of us enjoyed it and it was an excellant price for an excellant hotel. if you want the hub and excitement barcelona brings especially if staying with children this hotel is the perfect choice
Would stay at a different hotel next time
We stayed here at the recommendation of an agent mostly due to the location being within walking distance of many attractions. I was worried after reading the reviews. I found the younger hotel front desk staff (males) to be kind of rude. They gave us a room at first that had 2 twin beds instead of the double that we had booked and also the electronic key didn't work. They handed us a metal key and were smirking. We made them change our room. The older hotel front desk staff (also all males) were more accomodating and more helpful. We had room 316 which was very quiet, it faced the alley and not the busy street below. We did not have problems hearing plumbing and our water pressure was good. We are castillian spanish speakers so we feel we had an advantage over non-spanish speakers. The staff did not seem to treat the non-spanish speakers the same. We observed someone trying to check in and the attitude of the front desk seemed like they were bothered to have to help people who did not know spanish. We were here July 2004. We noticed a hotel called the Rialto that was only a few doors down and they seemed nice. We walked in to Hotel Rialto to grab a few brochures and the front desk said hello and asked us if they could help us. My husband asked them for some opinions on the local attractions and directions and they were very helpful.
