I have been to Kalymnos many times and everytime i stay at the Hotel Myrsina. Our first time was nothing like the broucher said that we got from the tour opperator. Yes it's an aquired taste, mainly for the disconcerning traveller. I am advising tourist that it's not the 'Ritz' but for the price i paid i had very little to complain about. The location is not for the unfit and elderly and amenities are only minutes away. The rooms were very clean and serviced daily, the toilet and shower, clean small and basic, for many tourist that go to Kalymnos are not aware that there's very little water pressure in the taps so having a quick shower might be fustrating for some. The management and staff were very friendly and went out of their way to make our stay pleasant and comfortable. The hotel doesn't have a restaurant but they do serve (Greek style) continental breakfast, extra's such as Ham, egg's are also available (extra cost)and for the late comers the poolbar serves snacks and toasties. Although the hotel is getting old and needs a facelift, for 25.00 euro's a night we enjoyed our stay.
I am sadden to see other review ratings that critisize the hotel such as..too many steps, too noisy, dirty and bad beds! We never experienced these things as we spent most of our time on Kalymnos lovely beaches. As a suggestion to the wining tourist, Check with your Tour opperator and Travel Agent that they provide the 'right' information..
Do what we did, book direct, get educated and find better deals.. Tour opperators only care about profits and bums in seats.

Sep 2008, Mrs S B

There is no doubt that this accommodation is basic. We weren't expecting anything else, given the amount that we paid for the holiday, the tour operator rating, and the general standard of most Greek accommodation.
Yes, there are lots of steps! I'm pretty sure that there is a warning about this in the Olympic brochure. The hotel is on a busy road. However, most of the accommodation in Myrties / Massouri is on the same road.
The hotel is outdated, but it's fine if you're using it as a base. If you're wanting to spend hours at the hotel, expecting entertainment or lots of amenties, this isn't the hotel for you. Our room was ok. Enough room and storage, with a lovely sea view. It was also clean, and kept clean by the staff. The bathroom was a bit shabby, the shower had seen better days, but was fully operational.
The breakfast is basic but acceptable. If you are in need of a " full english" or require more, there are bars that will provide this for you.
The air conditioning was 6 Euros a day. You could also hire a fridge for 3 Euros. Safety Deposit boxes are available too.
The hotel has positives and negatives. From a personal point of view, we had very little to complain about. The poolside area is ok. We spent a few days just lounging about. However, there is so much to see and do that I very much doubt that you'd want to spend your whole holiday at the pool anyway!. The toilets by the pool were out of action, which was inconvenient, and the owners' sons were in the habit of blasting out R'N'B tunes from the poolside bar, which grated on me quite a bit.
However, the family who run the hotel are lovely. Cheryl works extremely hard and we found her to be incredibly helpful. As it's a small hotel, it's nice to get to know your fellow travellers. The Pool Bar also does snacks, which were lovely and affordable.
We used this hotel purely as a base. Myrties and Massouri are fantastic resorts. Kalymmos and neighbouring Telendos are magical.
A couple of things re the Olympic brochure info: This hotel is a good 20 minutes walk from Massouri, where the cash machine and most of the bars and restaurants are. This walk can be hard when it's hot. The nearby beach is poor, so a 15 minute walk will take you to Massouri beach, which is great. There are also no kitchen facilities in your room. See above re fridge rental.
Would recommend the purchase of a snorkel as there are plenty of fish to see. The main Massouri beach is great. A visit to Telendos is also a must. We ate at a different restaurant every night. Would particularly recommend Argo, Prego, Aphrodite, and Nefeli Bar. You can also change Travellers Cheques / Currency at Nefeli which is a short distance from the hotel. There aren't exchange facilities available at the hotel.
We will be returning to Kalymnos, it's fantastic. Will probably not go with Olympic again as I wasn't overly impressed with them. We are actually planning on getting a package deal to Kos, and then booking accommodation in Kalymnos independently, effectively abandoning our Kos accommodation. This appears to be cheaper than going with Olympic direct to Kalymnos.

Sep 2008, Ms R M

Unfortunately this hotel was, in my opinion, below the standard one might expect from even basic Greek accommodation.
As a previous reviewer states, the location was noisy for such a quiet resort, and it was difficult to sleep with the constant noise of mopeds throughout the night. That was not, however, the main issue. The problem appeared to be a lack of maintenance and pride in the hotel. The poolside furniture was filthy, as were the chairs on our balcony. Things were in a poor state of repair with the toilet at the pool broken and the bulb missing from our outside light, for example. Our booking promised that we might purchase aircon but we were told there was none available for our room. The breakfast could politely be described as meagre: bread; a toaster to queue for (the other being broken); a slice of cake; some orange squash and warm water that may once have known a coffee bean.
That said, the location was lovely and I would most certainly visit the island of Kalymnos again.

Sep 2008, Mr E Henderson

This hotel is on a very busy road and this results in the noise levels being quite high during most of the day and night, particularly over the weekend. Not very relaxing, particularly at 4 in the morning. The hotel itself is showing the signs of a lack of care and maintainence by the owners. It is generally clean, but the pool area could be better. The breakfast included in the price was fine if you only eat toast, biscuits or chocolate cake for breakfast, but things like cereal or eggs are charged extra. Things like safe depost boxes and air con are available but they have to be paid for in cash, this hotel does not accept credit cards.
I would happily return to Kalymnos for a holiday, but would never return to this hotel. If you only want somewhere to sleep, its okay and it would make a nice youth hostel, but as a hotel it leaves much to be desired.

How much do you pay for a holiday? If...

Jul 2008, Mrs G.A. ARNOLD

How much do you pay for a holiday? If you want an exceptional 2 star base, this is the place for you.
Basic accommodation, clean room, sheets and towels; a friendly and very welcoming family atmosphere . If you make the effort and engage with the staff and the local inhabitants, you will find it most rewarding.
But; don't expect five star treatment for two star prices. This is Greece and those of you who know and have visited many islands, as we have, will agree that this hotel stands out. Katie and George, the owners, and their immediate family, three engaging and friendly sons, together with the other staff, make for a very family 'feeling' holiday. A refreshing dip in the pool, followed by a relaxing drink in the bar, after a hard day's sunbathing, culminating in an evening meal in one of the excellent local tavernas; what more do you want fom a holiday?
If you want neon lights, loud music and antisocial behaviour, Kalymnos and the Myrsina are not for you.
Life is short, so why not just enjoy the good moments at a reasonable price, in a friendly environment?
That's our experience, shared with you.

The hotel room was not ready on...

Jun 2006, Mrs A Chambers

The hotel room was not ready on arrival (despite this being the second day of holliday due to travel from Kos) Three other clients rooms were also not available and were dirty. We waited nearly two hours for room to be cleaned - when we saw it we didn't even unpack. The bed linen was damp and smelly and the room was dirty and and overlooked a road. We had booked and had confirmation of a sea view and twin. We got road, basement and very small dirty double bed!
We have had holidays in Greece for over twenty years - a lot of accommodation is basic , this is the first time we could not stay in the accommodation provided.
Don't take any notice of web site for Hotel Myrsina - not all rooms have air con and sea view and there are only twenty fridges to go around.
The Olympic holiday rep said that they had experienced problems with this hotel all year. If you are lucky to be given one of the few nicer rooms you may be okay, beware if you are given basement side room.
We moved to Aphrodite apartments further down the road , had a fantastic holiday - Kalymnos is lovely -views, restaurants, swimming, this is the second visit there and we would go again (not hotel Myrsina).
Don't let my review put you off Kalymnos, I would go back tomorrow.
I have written to Olympic for their comments - how can they continue to use this hotel following the complaints they have had?

The Myrsina Hotel, Kalymnos is set in...
6 / 10
Aug 2005, Mrs S Broadest

The Myrsina Hotel, Kalymnos is set in an elevated position and immediately on the islands main roads between Pothia (the main port) and Emporios at the far end of the island. This road is busy and noisy (all night also). The swimming pool is right on the road and is therefore constantly aggravated by the noise. Access to the hotel and rooms is via 50 steps (fairly steep) and therefore is not suitable for anybody with mobility problems. The staff are friendly and speak good English.
The rooms are very basic and clean but have seen better days. Our bathroom was below the standard that we were expecting. The basin had a large badly applied "chunk" of filthy filler running all the way along the joint between the wall and the basin. It was supported by a stool underneath and there was years of dirt and sediment around the base of the taps. The toilet would not flush properly and had a crack in the bowl. The beds although changed on a regular basis seemed to be the originals installed in the 1980's when the hotel was first opened. They were very uncomfortable and seemed to slope downwards from head to toe.
Air conditioning was an extra of 5 Euros a day and not included in the price as we thought. Breakfast was very basic, a large bread roll, jam and butter, tea or coffee. Extras were available at an extra cost-boiled eggs, cheese, ham, yoghurt. If you want peace and quiet, this hotel is not recommended. If you want sandy beaches, they are very scarce throughout the island. They range from small shingle with areas of sand to large pebbles. Some of the beaches are beautiful. The island of Telendos, seen from the hotel is more peaceful and well worth the trip.
If you intend to swim in the sea, invest in a pair of beach shoes as getting in and out of the water can be very painful on the pebbles. We had a lovely holiday on Kalymnos and bearing in mind it was the peak holiday period it was relatively quiet and we met alot of different nationalities- Dutch, French and English. The Kalymnians seem to be very genuine and friendly people.
