The George Hotel in Golden Beach is about an 8 minutes walk to the beach. It has a 2star rating and this probably correct. It is small, friendly and homely and the owners Stavros and Karen are wonderful. The room are exceptionally small and air conditioning costs extra. Breakfast was a bit of a let down with little choice. There was a fridge for use of the guests on each floor and we did not hear much traffic noise despite being facing the road. The bar in the evening was where most of the guests met up for a night cap. During our stay most of the guests were in the 50 plus bracket. No children permitted here which was a top draw for us. Kids and holidays together does not suit us. we have been there and done it. Good value for money if you accept it is basic and simple. if you want 3 star facilities you will need to go elsewhere and pa extra for it.

The George Hotel is run by Stavros and Karen who are both fantastic. The rooms are very small even by Greek standards and once you allow for the beds, the wardrobe and your suitcases it only leaves a tinny amount of floor space. The shower is extremely basic. The beds were quite uncomfortable. We thought the cost of the air conditioning was exorbitant especially as nowadays many hotels include this is the price. The rooms however are spotless. Breakfast is simple and not generous but it starts the day off in the right way.The bar in the evening where many of the guests mingle after returning from one of the tavernas is very nice. The hotel is a the back of the resort some 10 minutes walk to the beach and it is located on the only road so expect a little traffic noise. To be fair the holiday was not too expensive and despite all our comments we thought it was good value for money. For us next time we would pay a little more to get a little more. It was just too small and basic for us but it may well be ideal for others. Finally no children as an Adult only hotel was a real highlight. The resort of Golden Beach itself was wonderful which a great selection of tavernas and a lovely beach.A week was sufficient but we would have struggled to stay at the George for 2 weeks. Not many shops in the resort and be are that many tavernas only accepts cash and not credit cards.
Regarding the comments on the 'exorbitant' air conditioning charge: Thomson pay us around 12 pounds per room per night (yes, you did read that correctly) and out of that we have to provide breakfast, and pay tax, rates, electric bills, laundry, cleaning equipment, replace worn bedding and towels etc etc. We simply could not possible throw in free air conditioning without going bankrupt - we are barely able to keep going as it is. We charge you as near as we can calculate it, what the electricity company charges us to run the air conditioning. We make no profit on this charge.

We have just returned from a wonderful 2 week holiday in Thassos, staying at The George Hotel.
Having visited this beautiful Greek island 4 times previously since 1994, we can honestly say that The George hotel is the best accomodation we have stayed in on the island and the owners (Stavros and Karen)really do their utmost to make your holiday enjoyable.
Stavros is the main man. Being a Thassian, born in the ancient village of Panagia, a few kilometers from the hotel, he is a fountain of knowledge about The island and it's history. Couple that with useful tips about the weather and how to take shelter from the sun. Makes Stavros a handy bloke to know. He also has a great sense of humour, from ordering a cup of coffee to his stories about his life in the merchant navy, you are virtually guanranteed to end up laughing.
Solidly supporting Stavros is his wife Karen who is not averse to telling a humourous story herself.
All all on a bed and breakfast basis the George hotel is excellent value for money with wonderful host's. It is our intention to return again soon.

Stayed at George Hotel for 2 weeks and had a lovely quiet, relaxing holiday. Stavros and Karen run this 10 studio 'hotel' and are excellent hosts, providing a basic but plentiful breakfast, with as much tea/coffee as you need.
This accommodation is far superior to others close by, which look great in brochure but feedback from holidaymakers at the time was v poor! The rooms were cleaned daily and the owners are on site if you need anything.
The beautiful Golden Beach is just a couple of minutes stroll away, clean and quiet with lovely shallow shore line.
We ate at all the local tavernas/restaurants and enjoyed every meal we had, also v cheap!
Going back to Thassos in May 08 and trying a different resort area as I never go to the same place twice but, if I did, Golden Beach would be high on my list for a second visit.

My wife and i stayed for a week here having never been to Greece before. I have to say we were absolutley gutted that we only booked one week and not two!!!
The hotel was fantastic, very nothing was too much trouble for them. The rooms were great and the hotel is in a super location - it's nice and quiet but only a couple of minutes takes you to the beach and tavernas. 15 minutes walk along the beach or road and you reach the next town - Skala Potamia, which is full of.....................even more great Tavernas!
Karen and Stavros do a greta spread for breakfast; fresh greek yoghurt and honey they also have the best Cherries i have ever tasted picked fresh each morning - yum yum!
It was more like staying with friends than in a hotel. i would recommend this to everyone and can't wait to go back!

We have been staying at the George for the last 4 years with our twin daughters.
The location is perfect. Close enough to all you need but far enough to be tranquil.
Stavros and Karen ( the owners) Can't do enough to make you comfortable, they take a pride in what they do.
We feel very fortunate that we discovered The George Hotel many years ago.
And we will be back in 2008 for another chunk of heaven.

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Hotel George in Golden Beach for 2 weeks at the beginning of July 2007. We were looking for somewhere quiet and relaxing, and with a beach to spend most of the holiday on.
This is exactly what we got. The hotel is only a few minutes walk from the best beach on the island where the sand is nearly white and the sea is Caribbean style turquoise. It was the perfect place to sit and relax, read a book and sunbathe. The sea was really warm and completely clear.
There were quite a few tavernas nearby, though the best one we went to was called Playa de Oro (or similar!) a short walk from the hotel, and I would definitely recommend a visit there.
The Hotel George was a lovely place to stay. There are only 10 rooms which gives it a more cosy atmosphere.
The rooms are not huge but they're incredibly clean, the beds were comfy and there was a small balcony facing the front where you can sit and watch everything go by.
We spent most evenings in the hotel bar which was a great place to meet and chat to the other guests. The owners, Stavros and Karen were really friendly and helpful and were a big plus point in favour of staying at the hotel.
We would definitely go back and stay there again, and would recommend it to anyone who wants to get away from it all in a gorgeous and friendly location.

We went to the resort of Golden Beach last year and identified the George Hotel as the accommodation where we wanted to stay when we returned.
We booked up early and were not disappointed. The owners Stavros and Karen treated us more as friends than guests and the bar was a friendly place to meet after returning from one of the tavernas.
The room was nice and air conditioning was available and breakfast was above par compared to most other basic Greek holidays we have visited. Like most accommodations in this resort there was no swimming pool.
The only slight negative was the fact it was about a 12 minute walk to the beach but we did know this when we booked.
Wasps continue to be a problem at this resort and you would think the authorities would try and do something about it as we heard a number of people saying they would not return for that reason.
The George Hotel is a small, friendly, and slightly intimate hotel and would recommend it to couples who enjoy socialising at the bar for an hour or two in the evening. Like the resort the Hotel is not ideal for children.

We have just returned from an excellent holiday at the Hotel George, Golden Beach and we would recommend it to anyone.
The Hosts were very friendly and made life so comfortable for their guests. Also the breakfast s were varied and the service was excellent.
The cleanliness of the rooms was second to none and we hope to visit again next year.

The George Hotel is high on our list of best places to stay bearing in mind value for money. Small, friendly and comfortable with a nice bar to socialise later in the evening.
About a 7 minute walk to the glorious beach and tavernas 5 minutes away. Great for couples wanting a peaceful holiday without loads of kids and where the scenery is magnificent.
We can highly recommend both the George Hotel and the resort of Golden Beach.

We saw this 2 star hotel on the internet which we thought was a very good price and to be fair it was good value. However it did not suit us.The main reason for this fact was the size of the bedrooms they were miscroscopic. We have stayed in basic Greek hotels before but never in a room as small as this one. The bathroom and balcony were in fact more than an adequate proportion. Also everywhere was spotlessly clean. We were in a room above the bar and some evenings the talking on the terrace below kept us awake. We tend to be more earlier birds to bed and early risers. Breakfast was OK bit it would have been nice to have a cereal even a local variety available. We know a lot of people do not want cereal but it could be available on a help yourself basis. We can understand why so many guests return here but for us it was just too basic The price was hiked up by the price of 5 euros a day for air conditioning which was an optional extra. For 2 weeks this was 70 euros extra and we would have preferred to added sum to the cost of the holiday where this facility was included in this price. We could have coped with most issue here except for the size of the bedroom which made us feel very confined and this was a point beyond the owners control. We have learnt for the future there is no such thing as a free lunch and we will pay more to get more. The resort is lovely and three tavernas worth noting are Sotiris Taverna, Federas Taverna and The Magic Coast Taverna in nearby Skala Potamais
