Holiday Inn Istanbul City

For our first taste of turkey we were a little disappointed....you couldnt even tell that we were in Turkey!!! The staff were friendly enough but of virtually no use in terms of information, tours, altough more than happy to put their hands out for tips. Clean and nice looking but not if you want the real turkish experience.

We had an overnight stay here before leaving turkey the next morning from Ataturk airport. We had a suite room although it had a feeling of neglect with lights that did not work and wires hanging out of walls where facilities were missing. I stay in a lot of holiday inns on business and would only advise using this hotel if your trip is for this purpose. I was hosted several nights in august 2006. The hotel is good, with european standard quality. It's what you expect from a holiday inn. The room is large, clean, not noisy, and the bathroom it's ok. The room has also a small cofee and tea maker, the room service it's 24h and the hotel has gym, swimming pool and sauna. The breakfast its a very international buffet, good but expensive. Since all the good things for this hotel have been written , I will write about the bad things . Shuttle bus :hotel - airport :15 euros ( we thought it was for free , it is not ), a small chocolat from the mini bar 8 euros . Keep with you the confirmation and do not accept the change in the local money and then to your currency , too much money will be lost at this transaction . And something irrelevant :watch out of taxi drivers .

The hotel was clean and the rooms adequate. The location was ok, in that it takes around 15 min by tram to get to the old city. The area is however noisy. So if you have trouble sleeping with street noice i don't recommend this hotel. The advertised that there is air-conditioning, but this is only true for the hallways. So either you keep your window open at night or suffer from the heat. Outside temperatures were around 16 -20 degrees C, but inside with the windows closed was 26 C. Our tour group stayed at the Holiday Inn for three nights. Our twin room was comfortable but small. There wasn't much available space to keep our luggage out of the way. Room and bathroom were exceptionally clean. Great water pressure. No problems with fluctuating water pressure in the mornings! There are so many fine choices of hotels in Istanbul, but we were glad with the Istanbul Holiday Inn City, not the one in the Marina area of Istanbul. Why? 1) tram in front of hotel takes one to Grand Bazaar area, Aghia Sophia, Topkapki, even the airport. Some hours there's a crush on the tram, but it's usually fast, efficient, clean, and people are polite offering a seat to those in need of one. 2) breakfast buffet which is included in many rates is varied, good for the first few days. 3) Rooms facing inner court are... more

If you want a quiet holiday this is not for you !! Housekeeping staff very noisy in the mornings , banging doors and talking loudly!!!! Housekeping in room of poor standards and not very clean!!! The pool area was nice and staff was good there. Excellent location for tram across the road but also a nice walk to Sultanhamet in 30-40 mins. Value for money was okay..

The hotel is very clean and up to the usual standards of a holiday inn. The restaurant was basic, but nice. Directly opposite a tram stop that provides access to some of the historical parts of the city. There is a shell garage over the road from the hotel that is open 24 hours a day and sells a whole range of foods. Just avoid the sandwiches at the garage - They leave them sitting on the side all day at room temperature! Yummmmmm......not!

Holiday Inn Istanbul City was formerly the Hotel Oclay and the family is still actively involved in the property's operation. It is in a great location on a main thoroughfare, just inside the ancient city walls. There is a tram stop directly in front of the hotel, but we found it to be a nice, safe walk of perhaps a mile and a half to the Grand Bazaar, Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, etc. Along the way, you'll pass many places to eat or stop.
