Was going to Calgary to start a family tour of western Canada when read that we were looking at a close date to the Calgary Stampede, we decided to delay and actually coincide our start with the start of the World’s Greatest Outdoor Show known as the Calgary Stampede.
Arrived on the day before the main parade and opening day but this allowed us a preliminary visit to the park for a minimal $3 admission fee this was worth it as it gave us a good indication of the size of the place and how best to get around to and from the park also.
The first 30 hours were known as Are You Tough Enough to Wear Pink. This is all in aid of Breast care cancer research. And I will say the people really go into in pink bandanas and shirts all over the place and pin Stetsons for the ladies too. The Stampede takes over the whole city for a 10day period and is well worth a visit lots going on and plenty to do and can even be fed free with one of the big free breakfast events that moves around town. Make sure you do the two big events the afternoon Rodeo and the evening chuck wagon races and show well worth the visit alone.
The hotel we stayed at was formerly an Holiday inn now I think it’s known as the Inn McLeod Trail great location for the park as the local rail transit system is only a 2 minute walk away and this takes you to the park in less than 5 mins and into the city in about 10 mins all for approx $2.25 if I recall right day traveller can be good value if you use more than twice.
The hotel itself could do with a little modernising but saying that there wasn’t anything to complain about. Had a pool and gym bar restaurant and all that’s required for a comfortable stay. But if you’re a group of adults and you do visit during the stampede you may prefer to stay in the city as night time can come alive with all the partying that goes on with all the visitors in town. But book early as the rooms can be a bit on the pricey side in town.
Other than the city and stampede we made a short visit to Fort Calgary was a pleasant couple of hours but could do with a few more attractions there but the boys did enjoy putting on the costumes available for photos now we are a family of Royal Canadian Mounted Police to name one of the many costumes available.
Yes I would go back to Calgary again as a start t the visit of Banff national park and mountain region and would coincide with the Stampede outside of this though not sure what else the city may have to offer for a stay.

This hotel in fact is no longer a part of the Holiday Inn brand when we stayed here in July 2007 it was actually in new hands, all the Holiday Inn logos and branding outside the hotel were covered up although within the hotel still many signs of the brand was to be seen. I think it is now known as the Inn McCleod Trail.
The hotel in itself although was comfortable it could do with a little modernisation in a place or two maybe this is why its no longer Holiday inn. The hotel was as i say comfortable and staff friendly and has the added advantage of the indoor pool and gym areas. But a major boost must be its location to the local rapid transit system yes less than a 2 minute walk out of the hotel car park and you can then get the train for i think it was a $1.25 one way or a full all day ticket can be purchased this then can whisk you into the city centre within 10 minutes or to the stampede grounds in lews than 5 minutes.
Not too much in the local area within walking distance although we did find a restaurant or two and a bar or two. A 5 minute drive down the road is one of Calgary's main shopping malls with lots of shops to browse around and a decent food court too as can expected in a Canadian mall.
The hotel has its own bar and restaurant but cant comment on the food as we didn't eat in, the bar staff were helpful and friendly as i did happen to use this facility.
This is an ideal hotel to stay at if you are wanting access to the rapid transit system or to the Stampede park and if your looking for an hotel with pool and gym facilities. But if you are wanting more of a place to be able to walk to local diners bars etc. you may be worth paying the little extra to stay in town.
