Amarante Beau Manoir Hotel Reviews

10 / 10
Nov 2004, Mr G Markham

They sing about Paris in the springtime but in my opinion you cannot beat Paris in late November if you want to experience the delights without the crowds. We travelled to Paris in November and stayed at the 4 star Amarante Beau Manior in the Magdalene District. It helps if... more

Shocking Treatment
We had reserved a room at this hotel for a weekend in October. Upon my arrival on the Friday I was told that the Gentleman occupying the room I had reserved had not checked out of the room and so I could not be accomodated. I was told that they had transferred me to the Hotel Bristol which is just up the street. They also told me that my room had been upgraded and that the Hotel Bristol is a sister hotel. ALL LIES When I got to the Hotel Bristol I found out that there is no relationship between the two hotels, that I was actually downgraded, as the hotel was also full, and that I had to pay more for the lower grade room, than the superior room I had reserved. The staff in the Amarante Beau Manoir Hotel, upon my return to complain, acted as though I was lucky that they had found me a room anywhere and refused to refund the difference. Funnily enough they didn't appologise for the lies either!
Excellent Location, but rooms poor standard
This hotel is in a very good position in Paris as close to the metro and the Palace de Concorde. That is the best part... Besides this, the hotel has very little to offer. The rooms are small, and the toilet is basically a "cript" and very suffocating and for the price they charge per night for the Junior Suite, it is overrated.. On our arrival they attempted to put us into a room that was not what we reserved for, and we kindly asked to be put into the suite we reserved for. They did accomodate us, but if we did not complain, we would have been charge the higher price for a less expensive room... The breakfast was very good and it was included in the price of our room, and the only nice person at the hotel is the waitress in the breakfast room, as the ladies at the reception were not very helpful. At times they were somewhat rude. We asked them kindly to please call a taxi for us, and the reply was that the taxi stand was across the street. That is not the service we expect for a 4 star hotel. Next time I am Paris for business I will stay somewhere else..
DO NOT STAY HERE !!!!
This Hotel does not deserve even 1 star. It is worse than some hostels that we have stayed at. I believe that the hotel is holding onto its 4 star rating that it may have received about 100 years ago. First of all the sign for the hotel outside of the building is an old fading sign that just says "HOTEL" The top of the sign is a different color from the bottom of the sign due to fading or water damage. You walk in and the place smells of mold or old water. The reception desk is a small hole in the wall. The receptionist is rude and when we complained about our room he was saying insulting things about us to one of his colleagues in french because he thought we couldn't understand. We got to our room and found the room to be dank. Our window was broken and would not close all the way or open. It was freezing outside and we could not close it. The bathroom door was broken and did not have a lock on it. The ceiling had dark black stains in the corners which looked like mold or water stains from leaks. We had expected at least a 3 star hotel and this was not even a 1 star hotel. We tried to cancel our stay by talking to a manager but the receptionist said that there was no manager. We asked him to call the manager and he said he didnt have his managers number. We ended up not staying at the hotel and paying for our reservation. We stayed at a hotel across the street which was advertised as only a 2 star hotel and it was 10 times better than this hotel. DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL YOU WILL REGRET IT. Don't let them sucker you into staying there by giving you a free night if you stay for 3 nights.
great value - great location. no problems like previous posters
We got this hotel on hotels for $115 a night for 4 nights. It's a great location within a 5 minute walking distance from the madeline metro stop. Easy to take the metro (i.e. subway) to the RER (i.e. commuter rail) to get to major airports and tourist attractions. Never once took a taxi. Walked all over the place. This hotel is in a very safe area, and centrally located to just about everything. THe renovations are done, and I saw nor heard no construction noises whatsoever. We had a great room that was spacious, well appointed, and very quiet. I can't say enough good things here. If you can get this hotel for cheap, snap it up. I got a peek at the sheet the checkin had for the prices the other guests were paying, and the others were all in the $200/$300 range. They even had a PC that guests could use for simple internet access. It's a dog though, and full of keystroke loggers, spyware, etc. so for simple web page access and web email you should be ok, but don't log on to your credit card/bank account if you are smart. The room itself was quiet, comfortable, and well appointed. The bathroom was large and clean and the toiletries provided were not the cheap ones. This was by far a step above our 4* hotel we had in London for basically the same price. positives - location, air conditioning, well appointed room, friendly staff, great night sleep, free internet access in room, and on a PC in the lobby. negatives - bed a bit small - but ok though. Not a queen or king (next size down - full?)
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
the GOOD. Location: The Hotel is on a quiet side street off Place de la Madeleine. There are some interesting restaurants in the area. The nearest Metro station is a 3 minute walk and just 3 stops from Gare de Lyon, very convenient for those traveling via TGV. the BAD. Apathy. Frustrated employees. Decaying infrastructure: •Worn faded carpets •AC sockets falling out of walls. •Phone in room didn’t work. The manager had neither the skill nor will in-house to fix it. Theft-proof hangers: the really annoying kind that you have to fight with both to move and to get them out of their holders. €22 per day for in-room internet. It is rated with 4 stars. I don't know how they got past 3. the UGLY. The lobby and sitting room smell like a dank cellar. This is unfortunate, because the surf-station is located here. The housekeepers, more specifically the room-cleaners, are incredibly angry. You can tell they are required to say, “Bon Jour” to all the guests, but the look behind the gesture is one of violent contempt. At lastly… Beware of the “breakfast-not-included-trick”. Breakfast is so universally included in Europe, that one is lulled into the assumption that it is ALWAYS included. Not here. Then they whack you with the €20 per breakfast bill upon check out. I promise you, this breakfast is not worth €20. I’d pay €10 on my most generous day. RECOMMENDATION: Unless they drop their price to <€120 / night, keep looking. Stay somewhere else.
Loved the Amarante Beau Manoir
After having read the reviews of this hotel on this web site I decided to 'risk' it anyway. The hotel is not your typical 'chain' hotel. Very personal, intimate. The room, although a bit small for a junior suite with barely enough room for two adults and their stuff, was very cozy. The only sticking point(s) if you can call it that was the lack of shower curtains in the tub, I guess bathing is more popular and no room service. They do have lunch and dinner available from an adjacent restaurant. All in all, great location, cozy atmosphere, excellent breakfast, nice rooms. Would difinitely stay there again.
Not so great.
We stayed in Beau Manoir in the fall of 2002 for 5 nights.Atlthough the hotel was well-located, Our room was old, in need of repair. wallpaper was peeling. I had to stand on the bed to properly open the armoir and retieve my clothing. The room was tiny, dark and unappealing. The bathroom was basic at best. The most unappealing part of the experience was that management keeps all the lights off in the hallways. If you turn a light on, it automatically goes off in a few minutes. Opening a door to a very dark and dismal hallway at night is not a pleasant experience. The elevator can only fit one person, one suitcase. So be prepared for a few trips, or use the stairs. The Breakfast room in not particularly appealing, and the photos of it are deceptive. The breakfast itself was adequate at best.STaff were not particularly friendly or helpful. All in all, a VERY disappointing experience. There are MANY MANY hotels in this location. Find another!
Very pleasantly surprised!
We stayed for a weekend at this hotel after booking it only the week before on a last minute deal. It was my partners birthday and I had asked for the possibility of an upgrade before we arrived, and this was granted! We had a lovely (and huge!) room, the decor was perhaps slightly tired, but tI have stayed in much worse places in paris for a simalar asmount of money. The staff were courteous and friendly, we had breakfast in the room one morning which was delivered with a smile and on time, and the buffet breakfast the next day was excellent. A great location, 5 mins walk from the famous Saint Honore shopping street. For the deals that are available last minute on this hotel, I would reccomend it.
Disliked the Beau Manoir Hotel
My husband and I stayed here for 4 nights in April of 2002. The hotel was under renovation and was incredibly noisy and dusty. They had also turned the air conditioning off during an unseasonably warm week. They told us the A/C was broken but then the clerk told us that they just don't turn it on until June 1st. They were very indifferent and the room was old and stuffy. Very overrated interior--the only thing going for it was the location.
Just off La Madelaine
Me and my wife spent 3 nights at this nice and unknown hotel with a perfect location: just off Place de La Madelaine. We liked the size of our room a Junior suite ( avoid, if you can the normal rooms that are too small ). Two inconvenient were: the bathroom without a curtain so everything gets wet and specifically our room # 004 was just aside of the main floor elevator, we tried to get it exchanged but they were fully booked. Remember this and you will enjoy this small intimate hotel very much.
