My wife tells me I should give this place a very low rating in order to stop other people coming here! We have been to the Panorama three times now and we love Chrani.
The welcome is as friendly as you will get anywhere in Greece.
O.K. the beach can be a bit rocky in places and the sand varies from year to year depending on the winter tides but this is a small price to pay for the total relaxation you get here.
We loved the Greek food from the few tavernas, especially in Aphrodites on the main road, often forgotten because it's a little out of the way. We loved to spend the rest of the evening relaxing at Mary's Posiden bar after a hard days sunbathing or sight seeing.
If you stay in Chrani, Hire a car. It's money well spent. There are lots of places to see in the area. Koroni is lovely at night when all the tavernas spring into life. Also there are some lovely beaches around Koroni and Finikounda as well. The roads are generally in good condition and the traffic almost non existant.

The accommodation is only 30 - 40 mins from Kalamata airport, though if travelling by coach you will have to walk the last 2 - 300 meters as access is restricted.
The apartments are very clean and tidy; however beware if adults are using the sofa beds in the lounge as the "mattress" are only a couple of inches thick! (Saying this I can't speak for the other rooms in the complex)- Ideal for young kids though.
The beach was a little disappointing, more shingle and large rocks than sand, however it was quiet, and the route not as steep or far as we were led to believe.
The village couldn't be more Greek, with plenty of Tavernas to choose from in such a small town. The locals were more than friendly, even putting on a party while we were there, with free wine, food and entertainment.
If you want air con then its payable locally (5 euros per day). If you pay upfront try to get a receipt, as they don't seem to have a very robust way of keeping account of who has paid what or when. (They tried to charge us again at the end of our stay)
The Car hire (Budget) was very reasonable £120 for 6 days all in. There are plenty of good sandy beaches towards Koroni - the best we found was at Finikounda about 30 min drive south.
One point to bear in mind Chrani has no Pharmacy or cash point the nearest being Petalidi 10 min drive north.
Would I go back? Yes.

For the 2nd year running, we were greeted with a hug from the apartments owner, Nula.
We quickly left our luggage on the bed, and walked the 200 yards to our favourite kafaneon, Petros and Voula, where we were greeted like old friends and a beer on the house given to us.
Nothing had changed, the sun shone, the people smiled, and nowhere to be seen were earrings, football shirts and teenage girls with bulging midriffs! The tavernas had hardly altered, perhaps even for the better, and the prices were still at ridiculous 2004 levels.
The beach is still to be fair 'tatty', but a small sacrifice to avoid the rampant hordes of under 30's that would have tried their best to ruin the village. we are returning in 2006-enough said?

Like an earlier reviewer, I am tempted to give a low rating to keep people away but I guess that wouldn't be fair! The Panorama apartments were everything we want from a holiday accommodation. Clean, pleasant, beautiful views over the bay, friendly staff.
As for Chrani itself, we were bewitched. As many other people have mentioned, Chrani isn't the resort for you if you want nightclubs or even lots of shopping, but for an peaceful and authentic Greek village with some of the friendliest residents you could wish to meet, I don't think you could ask for more. I'm also a bit baffled at a few people who have complained about the beach. The main beach is a long strip of sand with no more pebbles than you would find on most 'sandy' beaches in this country. I think perhaps what people are talking about, is the fact that there is a wide stretch of large pebbles just as you enter the sea. Yes, it's true, that can make bathing a bit more difficult but it's only a few feet wide and the sea itself (warm, clear as diamonds) is sheer heaven - just remember to bring your jellies! There is another small beach nearby which is full of rocks but, unless you have a passion for finding those little Greek bays that nobody else uses, there's no real reason to use this one.
One of the most important points for us while on holiday is that 'regular' taverna - the one you come back to every night, even though you had planned to try somewhere else 'just for a change'. We found ourselves drawn back time and time again to the Veranda, just a few yards from the apartments (though that wasn't the reason we chose it). The food, like most Greek food, is fresh, traditional and beautifully cooked by Alfia who helps Tassos to run the taverna. What really makes this place special, though, is that personal touch. You want your meal without meat, or cooked in a particular way, as long as time permits (I don't want to make people think they can go in there and order octopus bathed in morning dew on the spur of the moment) nothing is too much trouble. The Veranda is one of the older restaurants is the resort where Tassos grew up, so you know this is no flashy 'tourist' taverna but the real thing. If you are really unlucky and fail to get one of the good selection of tables overlooking the sea, you can spend your evening looking, instead, at Alfia's beautiful flower paintings that decorate the walls, or the butterflies hand-painted on the pillars. We have many reasons for wanting to return to Chrani but the Veranda and its delightful staff are at the top of the list!
