Croatia's best kept secret!
We are a British family and we stopped there for 2 weeks from 22nd July to the 5th August. I booked it direct with the hotel after reading the reviews on Tripadvisor and flew low cost airline to get there. I am amazed that its not in any UK travel companies brochures as after looking at the other hotels in the area its by far the best if you want a family activity holiday. It was our first time in Croatia and we absolutely loved it. First let me tell you that there was no hassle with booking direct, the people at Valamar were very proffessional and everyone speaks excellent English. They also arrange a free transfer from the airport to the hotel and back included in the cost. The rooms are smallish, but spotless. Everything in the room is modern and clean with air con, small balcony with chairs, sat flat screen tv and a fridge in each room. We booked a family room and were given tye option of 2 normal rooms next door to each other with a 10% discount when we arrived as they were nearly full. They each had 2 large single beds pushed together which took up most of the space, but its really somewhere to sleep, so the main thing is a comfy bed! The food was fantastic, help yourself to local wine (nice), beer and soft drinks during meal times. There was something different every day including barbecued meat and fish. Salad counters to die for and a fantastic fish selection. Most of the cooking was done in front of you at the buffet stations, so no worries about cold , stale food and there are fresh hand made pizza's and pasta if your kids are not adventurous. It gets very busy though for dinner and to ensure your pick of tables you need to be there within 30mins of the service starting although the food is kept going right until the end of service, so nothing ever runs out. I was impressed with the service, very attentive and friendly. Unlike some of the other comments we thought the entertainment was excellent, something different every night. There are bands on every other night and then the animation team do different shows on the other nights. It runs over a two week period, so there are no repeats. The drinks at the outside bars are reasonable, but you have to move quickly to get seats as its very popular. We went on all the free bike tours with the staff, who were fantastic and our kids joined in with all the activities, which they loved. We were the only Brits there, but everyone is friendly and our kids loved it. There are towels provided and there was always sun loungers free (sun umbrellas were in short supply). The only downside is that there is not much else to do locally outside the resort. Over the bay is Camping Lanterna with about 5,000 campers, but you would never guess. There is a small centre 500 yards from the Hotel, but I thought it was pretty poor. There is a bus service and ferry into Porec daily if you get fed up, but with everything going on in the Hotel complex we only went once! We will almost certainly go back, so it would be nice to see a few more well behaved Brits next year!

Dear scallyboyuk, thank you for positive comments. I am pleased to hear that your visit to our hotel in the peak of the season was fulfilled from the beginning to its end, and that you were satisfied with our services and offer. Greetings from Porec to you and your family in Lancashire. We are looking forward to your future visits.

great for families with children
Booked 3 days at this hotel. great location above tree lined beach. beach itself not that great, but quite quiet. 2 very large pools - avoid the lower one in the morning if you want peace and quiet, due to the water aeerobics being blasted out of the tannoy. Rooms are spacious and well soundproofed to the level you'd expect from a 4 star and we had a nice sea view (we were in the new bit - not sure if this is the case in the older part of the hotel). beds really comfortable and bathrooms nicley appointed. Staff friendly ,helpful and child-friendly without being over solicitous. Food OK - you have to remember this is a big hotel and the self-service restarant can get busy at times. Also felt that the food was a bit overly -Germanic in orientation - don't go expecting local cuisine. If it's warm anough - eat on the ouside terrace - it's quieter - but at breakfasts watch out for hungry seagulls Other facilities very good - girlfriend had beauty treatments and said very good value and pleasant. Mountain bike hire is free and the equipment is of reasonable quality. Only complaint would be the games room - hot, unventilated, shoddy pool stables, and expensive on the whole.

Dear RdavidW, thank you for the review. We are pleased that you are satisfied with the services and contents in our hotel and we hope that you will come to Poreč again. As far as the gastronomic offer is concerned at Valamar Tamaris Club, we based it primarily on local specialties this season, especially focusing on "show cooking" restaurant and regional cuisine - Istrian and fish dinner themes. Greetings from Poreč to you and your family in London. We are looking forward to your future visits.

Valamar Tamaris Mixed Review
Our stay at Valamar Tamaris was everything prior reviews had us expecting (fun for kids, pretty, good food), save one surprise which slightly soured our experience. We found the front desk service to be unhelpful and at times almost rude, with an all-too-frequent "no" in response to basic requests for things like help booking horseback riding and borrowing a plug adaptor. The restaurant, bar and, in particular, the "animation" / activities staff were very friendly. Also, one other child-unfriendly issue was the fact that there were no self-laundering options; the only option was the expensive item-by-item laundering and when we asked the front desk if they could suggest alternatives in town, unfortunately the answer again was "no." With this service issue resolved, I would agree this is a fantastic place to stay.

Dear CaliUKfam, I am very glad that your overall impression of our hotel was positive. According to your review, the only mixed impression you have, is of the staff at the reception, who weren’t able to fulfill some of your requests at the time of your stay (May 2008). Your request concerns the offer outside the hotel, and you mentioned booking a riding. I would like to thank you for your suggestion, and I am happy to inform you that you can contact us regarding your future visits to our hotel in advance by phone or e-mail. If possible, we will be glad to help you with your choice regarding the extra services at the destination. Greetings from Porec to you and your family in London. We are looking forward to your future visits.

Excellent Choice
I would have to agree with the other reviews - we were very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the hotel (and we are very picky). Comfortable, clean, many options (bikes, kayaks, fitness club), well above-average food, and so on. I would only caution that the hotel is not exclusive - it was quite crowded during our stay but unlike other mass-market hotels, this one managed to stay peaceful and quiet. There was never a lack of availability of pool chairs, beach-front space, and so on. There is also a wide variety of activities for kids, such as a staffed kid's center and playground. We enjoyed our stay and would recommend the hotel without hesitation.

Dear MamasanPrague, thank you for the positive comments and suggestions related to our hotel. Greetings to you and your family in Prague. We are looking forward to seeing you again in Porec :)

Perfect chillout week
I agree with everything others have written, all true, no point in saying it all again. Travelled 10th September and weather was perfect. Food, staff, rooms, facilities (including free cycles, aqua aerobics, tai chi and more), all spot on. One or two minor problems solved very quickly. Full board very good value. Great to have beach towels provided, and could change them if we needed to. Absolutely nothing to do except enjoy yourself. Far from other towns which only made it more relaxing. Landscape beautiful. I will come back here soon! Re travelling to other places -Got taxi to Porec once and found it very expensive -£20 each way, so check before you get in! Or as another traveller said if you want to sightsee hire a car. Venice was lovely, but in my opinion too much travel, and not enough time to see Venice. It cost £50 each, and on reflection would be better done as a citybreak.
Management response from Valamar 01 May 2009

Dear anne2000, thank you for your feedback and hotel review. From 2007 until today, numerous extras have been introduced at the hotel and we have expanded our external services offer, so from now on, apart from the excursion to Venice which is in our standard offer, you will be able to choose between series of other destinations, in Istria and other surrounding regions.

Excellent for families, hope to come back next year - top class
We had a wonderful holiday at Valamar Club Tamaris - we arrived after the restaurant was closed (21.45), and were given a salad, drinks and fruit. The hotel and grounds were kept spotlessly clean at all times - food was excellent, staff were lovely and helpful - most speak english. We have 3 young children aged 2, 4 & 7 - they were never bored, they loved the mini club, the swimming school each morning, mini golf, safari day trip organised by mini club - I could go on and on! Free towel service at swimming pool - you get towel cards on arrival and can exchange towels each day if you wish! We had the most relaxing holiday ever! Some members of the family took advantage of the free bikes, also the trampoline (fee payable). I enjoyed the water aerobics every morning. There was something for everyone, the animation team worked very hard, they hosted a different show every night after the kids disco! Well done to the Valamar Club Tamaris, we can't wait to go back! Highly recommended!

Dear Seaclain, thank for your extremely positive comments. Testimonies like this always please us and give us additional incentive to be even better. Greetings to your entire family, especially the children – see you in Poreč.

Nice hotel, not a great area.
Family of 2 teenage children just returned from a week at this hotel. The hotel has everything children could wish for on holiday. So much for them to do, nice pool (although a little greasy) loads on the beach going on and a great mini club for little ones and teenagers. We took advantage on the free bikes, table tennis, mini golf, tennis and much more. The rooms are small but the best beds we've ever slept in! The food was really good. As we are a fussy family we were a bit worried but there really was something for everyone. The entertainment team work very hard and put on a show every evening. The downside is where it is situated. It is in Lanterna and you really need a car to go anywhere. There is no possibility of walking to a nice bar or along the beach in the evening. The area was full to the brim as it was peak season and traffic was a complete nightmare. We tried to go to Slovenia (lake Bled) but travelling just to the border took nearly 2 hours and even to Porec took 30 minutes for a 5k journey. The area is full of Italians and looks like Italy so we often felt we were not in Croatia. All in all, the hotel was lovely but we would not return to the area.

Dear Charlotte003, thank you for your comment. Firstly, we are very happy to hear that your children enjoyed many activities designed especially for them, from pool to mini club etc. Also, we are very glad that you and your husband enjoyed the sports activities, food and comfortable rooms. As far as your comments about the traffic and tourist in Poreč is concerned, we should mention that you were staying with us at the peak of the season, the so-called “Ferragosto”, time of holiday breaks in Italy, when large number of Italian guests come to our town, who are traditionally our most numbered guests, and very dear to us. If you would enjoy less frequent period of your stay, we recommend you visit Poreč and our hotel in June or September. Greetings from Poreč to you and your family in London. We are looking forward to your future visits.

Excellent hotel for families
We booked this hotel very much at the last minute and have just returned from our week there. We traveled with some trepidation, knowing little or nothing about what we might expect (there was no review on TripAdvisor until now!). I would have to say that we were more than satisfied with our experience. The place, the staff, the food and drink, the entertainment, the range of activity options - all were superb. The value for money was also first rate. The price for full board was very reasonable. We had one or two minor irritants (no extra bed for our third kid when we arrived, towels were not available one day so had to use yesterdays) but any problem was dealt with in as co-operative and friendly a way as you might hope for. As another reviewer noted, most guests were German speaking and we certainly did not mind this although it might have been a bit better for the younger kids to have other English speaking kids to meet up with.

Dear EssEll, thank you for your hotel review. Greetings to the Dublin and, of course, we hope we'll see you soon in Poreč. Special greetings to your children. This year we have prepared numerous additional contents for children what will probably make them happy.

FANTASTIC HOTEL
Hi. I have just returned from a holiday at the Valamar Tamaris Hotel Resort. It is nothing short of fabulous! The brochure underrates the resort enormously. You can choose to stay in a number of places at different qualities, sort of like Center Parcs. There are hotel rooms, apartments, villas and camps. We stayed in the hotel - its a lowrise 3 storey building where the main resort reception and the dining area are. There are two fabulous pools, one for kids with a slide and whirlpool, and an adult one with jacuzzi and jets. The sunbeds are extremely comfortable too. If you are going full board you are in for a treat - the food is fantastic! Believe me, I am a nutritionist and not easily pleased but there is a full aray of choice each mealtime and the kids will also be very happy. There are salads, cereals, pizza, pasta, fresh fish etc etc etc etc. Additionally wine and beer are included at mealtimes - and it's Stella and good Croatian wine on offer so no rubbish there either. The resort is right on the Adriatic Sea and 100 metres from the concrete beach. If you want to you can walk right along and easily find a patch on the rocks. There are diving boards and steps going into the sea all along. You can get free bike hire, there are numerous tennis courts, volleyball courts and football pitches. Mini Golf, Walking and plenty of fitness classes each day. The gym is small but good. There is a mini club for the kids with tons of things to do each day i.e. postcard making, icecream competitions, swimming lessons etc. If I have one negative it is that you are really based in Lanterna not Porec. It is a 10 min drive into town and you cannot walk into any village easily (we walked to the nearest one and it took over an hour and wasn't very exciting!). You can get a free bus into Porec or hire a car for approx £150 for 4 days so not too expensive or prohibitive. There is a ferry that can take you to Porec or Novigrad but it will only leave if the minimum number of passengers arrive. We didn't find this a problem and really enjoyed being away from it all - there is so much peace within the hotel it is great to be there. In the evenings there is also entertainment ie. bands, karaoke, theatre performances. We found them very kitsch but a great laugh. There are very few English visitors, mostly European, in the hotel. We are English and were really pleased about this as it hopefully means that Croatia is a few years away from gerish nightclubs and Irish pubs. We loved everything about this hotel and Croatia - let us pray that tourism doesn't strip it of its cultural beauty. I hope this helps, please respond if you have any other questions and I'll do my best to help. Wendy

Dear Bluefriendlycat, thank you for your review of Tamaris and the impressions you have shared with the Tripadvisor community. I have to admit that I am particularly pleased by the fact that, as a nutritionist, you have recognized the quality of food and drinks in our hotel which you described very well. Greetings to Kent, "The Garden of England", and of course, I hope that we'll see you again in Istria.

Great Hotel
This hotel was not our first choice but after a double booking with our first choice hotel we were offered Club Tamaris. It is based a little out of Porec which is the only downside as you do need to make use of the local transport to visit the town. The Club Tamaris Hotel resort has recently been renovated in April 07 so when we visited everything was fresh, clean and beautifully laid out with newly landscaped gardens. Hotel room was ideal with fridge to store some cold drinks and balcony. Cleaned everyday, fresh comtemporary decor. On a full board basis there was plenty to choose from everyday.( Salad bars, several meat choices, fish/seafood, pasta, pizza....list is endless) Drinks including wine and beer( Stella on tap) to help yourself both at lunch and dinner. Other wines to buy if not partial to the house wine but the white wine was nice. This hotel really caters for Families with many kids clubs, and sports activities, although 2 pools; Active Pool with flume and waves for kids and a Relaxing pool ( no floatables allowed). Beach access at the bottom of the resort. ( 5 mins walk) Here you can also get the Taxi boat into Porec. ( 35 kuna per person, takes almost 1 hr) Entertainment everynight but with a couple of different seating areas. There is a lovely terrace that has wonderful sea views, comfy seating and is perfect to just sit back and enjoy one of the delicious cocktails or a coffee. Would certainly recommend this hotel whether as a family or as a couple. As a couple in our 30's we thoroughly enjoyed it.Spent most of our time at the relaxing pool with Jacuzzi and Sauna. Plenty of loungers and parasols. While we were there the hotel was mainly filled with German, Russian and Eastern European holiday makers. Very few Brits but we actually enjoyed this aspect of the holiday. Excursions We took a trip to Venice which was great although it is a long day but well worthwhile. A tip would be to take advantage of some of the organised tours that Venezia lines offer which you can find out about onboard. This allowed us to see a good bit of Venice on the day, including a gondola ride( 23 Eurosp/p, shared with 2 other couples ). This was good value compared with the gondola prices which range from 75 Euros to 200 Euros. A day to Pula takes about 45 mins by bus from Porec. (70 Kuna return ticket per person) A visit to the amphitheatre and wander round town is lovely. Bus from Lanterna into Porec is 44 kuna and takes 15- 20 mins to get into town.
