I am not generally a complainer and have been to Goa 3 times so knew what to expect but the Dona Alcina really is GRIM. Firstly the hotel is now almost filled with younger Russian tourists - noisy, partying, drunk Russians. All very intimidating ! hardly any british guests... more

Generally the trip was excellent. Main problems was with Monarch organisation (not flight crew) The comments expressed about Dona Alcina appear to be of elswhere. Our room & a friends were acceptable and all the staff were extemely frendly and helpful. Even the rep was good... more

Just back from the Dona Alcina in Goa and what can I say? The room was disgusting - ripped curtains with about a thousand bugs on the window ledge, filthy green walls and not to mention the light switches and plug sockets hanging from the wall with the wires exposed. 2... more

Dec 2007, Mr A. L. Andrews.

I booked a holiday to travel to the Donna Alcina from the 9th Dec to the 23rd Dec. This year six weeks prior to travelling; before going I went on the net to check the reviews and was a little disturbed by what I read. I don't know why. Arriving at reception I was asked... more

I have rated this "accommodation" as 1 as the scale does not go any lower. It is some years since we visited this "hotel" and I see it has not improved. Having arrived after the long journey we were shown to a room. The place was absolutely filthy. It had not been cleaned... more

After booking the holiday I checked on the net & read the reviews about the Alcina. (Wishing we hadn’t) myself and friend decided first time in Goa will go with an open mind. Not that it did us much good when we actually arrived. After booking the holiday we received a... more

After reading the many awful reports on the Dona Alcina, my partner and I were dreading our arrival at the resort. Why? I don’t know! The Dona Alcina is yes basic, but it was clean and friendly. Our room was of an okay standard, plenty of space, a TV, air con and... more

Avoid unless desperate
We booked to stay at the Don Alcina for 2 weeks over Christmas and New Year. We arrived Christmas day (after a 25 hour delay in Bahrain) to be told we were staying in the Don Francesco next door (same owner), The room was the pits, padlock on door, bars on windows, really dark with view of a grass bank and no TV as promised or air con as requested. Hence we didn't stay to find out any more, although we did talk to a local who used to work here and he said ours were the worst rooms in the hotel. Can recommend Calypso beach appts in Baga.
hmm...
The staff were very friendly and i cannot fault the way they dealt with our problems; quickly and efficiently, however, there were problems. My first room had a wasps nest 2 metres from the door. The wasps were everywhere in the room. The only other problem was the cleanliness and general upkeep of the room. Understandably it is a developing destination so if you are expecting western standards you should be prepared to pay a bit more money and stay somewhere like the Highland Beach Hotel Resort. I stayed there in Jan 04, and i can't fault it! I thoroughly recommend Candolim though and am currently planning m third vist!
loved every minute!
This was our first visit to Goa and the hotel was more than adequate. There were a few problems with the water and electric being cut off but the staff bent over backwards to resolve the problems. The pool is a good size and very clean. The food at the hotel was a bit of a let down, but it was the start of the season and I don't think the kitchen was in full swing. However, the restaurants within walking distance were varied and good quality and very cheap! The "After Eight" restaurant is a must.Maybe a bit more expensive, but the food and service is next to none! On the whole we had a great holiday and are returning this year.JW
Dona Alcina
As expected very basic but clean. The staff were all very friendly and would do anything for you. Rooms are comparative in size to any others anywhere else, found that the rooms surrounding the pool area are the best as the ones set away do look as if in need of modernisation, will be going back again this December.
avoid this hotel!
read reviews on other sites re this hotel, all bad. filthy, dark rooms, rotting windows, doors that dont shut properly, rusty old fridge, stained mattresses and linen, what a nightmare. moved 2nd. day, supposed to be best room in hotel, what a joke. please don,t stay there, we were lucky we had money to move else where, others had to stay. 3rd, world country and we didn,t expect more than basic facilities, but could not stay in such a dirty place. loved candolim and the locals are lovely, going again, but will be at casa sea shell, a smaller hotel, cost us 800 rupees a room a night, spotlessly clean, wonderful 1 hope to get refund from manos, as they relet our room a couple of days later, our rep was on hols. so chased around to get help ourselves, airtours rep took our complaint, but weren,t interested really. she told us airtours only use it as a allocation on arrival hotel, it is not in their brochyre anymore, we know why now.
Dungeon
This must be the worst hotel in Candolim. This was our third visit and previously have found the hotels to be basic, but clean and pleasant with very good staff. Although the room was clean the general areas around the pool and eating area of this hotel were dirty. The rooms did not have daylight as the windows had frosted glass and our balcony overlooked a 20 foot brick wall. The breakfast was self service with the margarine, jam & marmalade in large containers which were continually being left open to flies.
Prison Cell
We have been to Goa many times but were astounded by the Dona Alcina hotel. Most Prison cells are more luxurious. The room had no natural light, the smell was awful and the place looked like it had not been cleaned for years. This was despite a two star rating. We have stayed in many 2-star hotels in Goa and in comparison, they should be awarded a 10-star rating. Whilst searching for a new place to stay we came across many superior rooms in hotels classified as 'budget' ie they were not even awarded a star. Please do not stay here.
Basic but good value
We got a really cheap package to stay at this hotel. We didn't expect much but were pleasantly surprised. Although very basic it was clean and the service and people were great. I would definitely return.
The best ever
this was without doubt the best holiday i have ever had, it was my first time to Goa. the dona alcina was at the best standerd. I took the holiday by myself and the hotel staff certainly helped get away from those home sickness blues, the food was great and the entertainment was out of this world.........i'm going back there with my family very soon for 3 weeks..........I recomend the dona alcina to anyone who wants a great holiday..
Hotel? More like Hostel.
I know that India is going to be a little basic, but Dona Alcina abuses the privilege, its been abandoned to its fate. It is between owners and suffers because of it. The grounds are fine, but the rooms just don't make the grade. The staff however are excellent, this reveiw is not meant to reflect on them. Spend your money elsewhere, the Highland resort was recommended to me too late, Prazeres also rates highly amongst regular visitors, and also the sea breeze resort to a lesser extent. Going back to the room was the only downside to an otherwise enjoyable trip. The goan people are fantastic, and the beaches are perfect, an excellent location to sit back and relax, get to know a cab driver who will become your personal tour guide, money goes a long way, and the seafood can't be beaten.
