Edinburgh Murrayfield Hotel Reviews

7 / 10
Jan 2008, Mr G Burke

This hotel was really good overpriced in my opinion. I'd like to give it a lower score but the food hall and the actual food they supplied was really top class and possibly warranted the £100 per night they ask However, the major drawback was the quality and size of the... more

Hotel or sports bar?
The Murrayfield Hotel needs to rethink it's priorities... One of the first things you notice when you walk into reception is the large, modern bar, complete with trendy blue back-lighting, polished chrome beer taps and a couple of big-screen TVs permanently tuned to Sky sports. They have clearly decided to use their proximity to the stadium to their advantage and have invested in making the bar attractive to visiting football/rugby fans and other non-residents. There are two problems with this; firstly, as I experienced, when a football match is on at the stadium, the bar and its outside seating area get extremely busy and very loud due to the chanting and singing of hundreds of fans. Paying guests stand little chance of getting a drink and may even struggle to get back to their room because of the intimidating crowd. It was not a pleasant evening. Secondly, and my main complaint, the investment in the bar has clearly been made at the expense of modernising or maintaining the hotel rooms. My room was out-dated, dirty and in very poor condition - definitely not worth £100 per night. Every surface, and even the hotel information folder, was covered in a thick layer of dust and debris from the flaking ceiling. The visible bits of the carpet were Hoovered, but under the bed was filthy - I found this out because I had to reach under to retrieve a coin I'd dropped, only to pick up a corn plaster. It was used. The tiny portable TV came without a remote control and most of the channels tuned in the wrong order, or not tuned in at all. The hotel had provided a new kettle on the waist-high tea-making shelf, but the cord was not long enough to reach the socket so I had to boil water on the floor. The old kettle had been removed, but its (unusable) cord was still left nailed to the wall between the socket and the shelf, another example of sloppy half-finished work. The cheap plastic shelf in the tiny bathroom hung loose at a worrying angle and I suspected just one cotton bud placed on it would have it crashing to the floor. The shaving light didn't work, the extractor fan was clogged with dust and the shower was either freezing or scalding depending on which guests in other rooms flushed their toilets. If I had to say something positive about the Murrayfield, it would be that the staff are friendly and helpful, but this is little compensation for the condition of the room I stayed in. Did I bring any of this to their attention? Well no...I took the view that as there were so many things so obviously wrong with the room, they must have noticed for themselves and chosen to do nothing about them. The hotel was full due to the festival and I would not have got another room if I'd complained, so I have chosen to share the experience on Trip Advisor and let people make up their own minds.
Great Place, Great people
My stay at this hotel was a great experiance. The staff was very friendly and helpful, the food above average, and the pub was great. The room was clean and comfortable. I would recomend this hotel to anyone traveling to Edinburough. A+++++++++
traditional but a great price!
The hotel is very traditional but the main thing is that our room was clean and comfortable. We ate in the bar both evenings which has a great atmosphere and the food was excellent. They offer some great accommodation deals in winter, and for what we paid, as we were on a budget, it was of a good standard and above all, the staff were very friendly.
Room was disgusting
I stayed during the worst time for a vacation, but had no choice. This hotel was terrible all around. The service was horrible and the rooms were not clean. I would not advise anyone to stay here. I know the festival was going on, but the carpet was torn and the rooms were dirty. The wallpaper was coming off of the walls. The breakfast was the only good part of the experience. The room was definitely not worth 200.00 per night even though the festival was occurring.
Much better than expected
We needed a two night stay in Edinburgh from which we could easily access the town centre, and the Zoo. We are two friends who like some privacy so we wanted two, single, en-suite rooms and a hotel with a car park. We couldn't have chosen a better location. The Murrayfield Hotel is on Corstorphine Road, the same road as the Zoo which is a very short bus ride in one direction, and Princess Street which is a short bus ride in the other. The bus service was second to none with a choice of three frequent buses into town. Over the road to the hotel is Murrayfield Stadium, which has a nice riverside walk. On our arrival we were very impressed by the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff. We were shown to our rooms (we had been allocated a double each). The rooms were clean (except skirting boards and sorry looking net curtians) the towels and bed linen immaculate. The rooms, though bright, needed some TLC, especially around the window area but we did notice that the hotel was being painted and the bar had been recently refurbished so maybe there are plans to update other areas too. We ate in the bar the first night and really enjoyed our meal, we had no complaints about the breakfasts either. All in all we were quite happy with our choice.
Awful..........
Stayed here for one night only as was attending an exam in nearby area. Booked mainly for convenience. Just as well i was doing nothing but going to bed although even that was hard to do..... The room i stayed in was awful...... wallpaper hanging off, burn marks above the (one) radiator in the room and the sheets smelt disgusting..... all smoke and god knows what else. The windows are single glazing which doesn't help when you're next to the main thoroughfare into Edinburgh city centre. I didn't have time to go into the city for something to eat so thought i would try their bar food - Big mistake!! Processed burger which must have been roadkill, and the soggiest, limpest wedges that yuo have ever set your sorry eyes upon. Avoid.
Dirty and needed updating
A horrible place with dirty bedrooms and bathrooms. The whole place could have really done with updating. The service was also pretty dire with staff leaving our room unlocked after they went in to fix a fault with the TV. We were given a room above the bar which is open until 1am on the weekend. Needless to say that there was no chance of being able to get to sleep at all until they stopped the music. No reduction in rate for this either. I'd try to find a nice b&b next time as this place certainly wasn't worth the money and I wouldn't choose to stay there again.
lovely Scottish Hotel
Very enjoyable stay, friendly staff, good value for money, superb location 5 minutes bus ride from city centre. Lovely memories.
Very Poor
I stayed in the Murrayfield Hotel on Sunday 13th June, the night of The Red Hot Chili Pepper concert at Murrayfield Stadium. Whether the service that was afforded to me was due to the concert I cannot tell, but in short, it was awful. We could not charge anything from the bar to the room, we could not take our 13 year old son into the bar because it was full of non-residents, the prices at the bar were extortionate, it took 15-20 mins to get served at the bar, the breakfast was average and took 40 minutes to be served, and that only after having to ask for our order to be taken 15 minutes after being seated. I myself attended the concert, so I knew the place would be busier than usual, but the hotel threw the any consideration for residents out the window in order to cash in on the event. Beware if a similar event is happening when you are planning to stay.
