My own home is better!!
from Disappointed-JHB
Our group of 4 (three adults and one six year old) booked at le Coco Beach for 7 nights. Based on other website reviews and advertisements, we thought that this would be real value for money. But alas! After four days we booked out and upgraded to another hotel - as there was no accommodation left at Sugar Beach or la Pirogue, we opted for the more expensive le Touessrok just to get out of le Coco!! Here are reasons why: 1. Sleeping arrangements not prepared for three occupants The request was that the child shares a room with two adults as the third adult occupies a room on its own – this is apparent as an individual supplement was paid for one adult. On arrival there was no third bed for the child. On request there appeared confusion on the side of the resort personnel – a bed base eventually arrived. 2. Bed base in poor condition The upholstery on the base was tattered and torn. Further to this, only on the third day was a bedspread provided. 3. Counter top damaged The melamine and pressed wood counter top was peeling and wood splintering - obviously damaged for some while and not fixed. 4. Cupboard doors The cupboard in one room had no doors – after enquiry into this it was stated that the room that did have doors (the room occupied by the one adult), was an “example room”. Clearly this is misleading if used for marketing or other purposes? 5. Bathroom Only one small bar of soap was available – a larger one for the bath/shower was eventually provided on request as well as additional towels for the third occupant. 6. Air-conditioning Despite being dirty and rusty on the exterior, these units were noisy and in poor working order, viz. fan speed on one unit could only be regulated by means of inserting a sharp pointed object (a pocket knife in this instance) into the switch. The other unit’s thermostat remained at one temperature despite preferring higher settings. 7. Poolside equipment Sunbed mattresses were tattered and torn (unfortunately no images are available as at that time we were too in a hurry to book out of the hotel). The majority of these were in a bad condition. These were neither cleaned (just a wipe-off even) for the next day’s use by another customer – emphasis on hygiene should be considered. 8. Room service There is none. Not a pre-requisite for our party but most probably for some. Light meals ordered at the poolside bar are put into polystyrene containers for one to enjoy in your room. Room service would have been nice as the weather was very windy during our stay and poolside dining was unpleasant. 9. Dining room service Used dining equipment such as plates and utensils were slow to be removed – we ended up placing them on adjacent empty tables. 10. Dining utensils Unfortunately no images are available as at that time we were too in a hurry to book out of the hotel. All white coloured plates were badly scratched and marked due to scouring – surely these can be replaced? Glasses and carafes were a mixture of both glass and plastic (no, not the ones for kids, but for adults!). 11. Availability of consumables The acclaim to ice-cream being available (all inclusive package) is sporadic – on occasion ice cream was not available until 12h00. Choice was limited to only vanilla or chocolate – a misnomer for the “all inclusive” package in terms of slowly chipping away on the value for money issue. 12. ISO accreditation This hotel boasts ISO accreditation. Surely with the poor condition of equipment, late arrival of stock (e.g., ice-cream; ISO requires amongst things, processes and standards linked to stock taking and replenishment), slow or no service, poor condition of room furniture and furniture standards not being the same, its ISO accreditation needs to be removed. As being involved with ISO methodology ourselves, we will subsequently request the ISO authorities to do an audit to determine Le Coco compliance. Rumour has it that Le Coco is soon to be totally revamped – surely this is no reason for quality and service to be compromised for existing clients. 13. The reason for our complaints is not from being purely difficult – it rests in two beliefs. Firstly, that we expect the same standard or better that we experience in our own home, i.e., my own dining and pool equipment, furniture and air-conditioning (yes, I have two units in my home) is of better standard/condition than that of my destination accommodation (in this case Le Coco). Secondly, value for money is at stake – what we pay for is not reflected in the price. We are of the opinion that the “all inclusive” package is a way to attract clients but fails to deliver in all round quality and good standard.
Family honeymoon!

In May 2006 we travelled as a family of two adults with our two young daughters aged 4 and 3. The 2 week holiday was booked through Thomas Cook Signature Holidays and we flew from Manchester with Emirates via Dubai, roughly 2 x 6 hour flights with a couple of hours in Dubai, (enough time to have a pint of Guinness in the airport!) The flights were great with 500 on demand movies to chose from including all the disney classics which the girls loved. We were met at the airport and driven to Le Coco Beach Hotel which is on the east coast of the island. The drive took about 1 hour and the taxi driver told us about the island, the fact that the children are educated in both French and English, and that it is a very mixed island with a large proportion of the population being hindu and hence vegetarian. On first sight Le Coco Beach looks a bit like Santa Fe Hotel at Disney Land Paris ie bright colours and themed. The welcome we received was very friendly and we were given a drink whilst they moved our luggage to our villa. We ordered a superior villa, which in effect is the upstairs of the villla, with the downstairs being 2 smaller rooms. The room had a lofted ceiling, wonderful airconditioning and a double bed with a pull down sofa bed for the kids. The mini bar was well stocked and filled every day. It is included in the all inclusive tarrif. The bathroom was a little 'shaby' and looked as if it had not been updated in the 10 years since the hotels was built. It was clean and perfectly usable, the shower was powerful bt the paint here and there was starting to peel. This is the only negative thing though I would say about the whole holiday. The staff were the best I have ever encounted anywhere in the world. They are so polite and friendly, and it is genuine not false and plastic like in the US. They would go out of their way to help us and to bring things to show the children. The food in the main resteraunt is excellent, they have a buffet for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and the choice is not limited and the standard is excellent. They do cater for the uk if that is what you really want, ie they will offer to make you bacon and eggs if you really want it but there is so much more to chose from with other cultures and tastes. They have a whole section that is asian vegetarian (hindu) with about 6 different hot meals and breads, dips that is wonderful. Being an island they obviously have some wonderful fish dishes and also offer meat dishes with a kind of creole influence. The fresh friut and sald section is exotic and the deserts selection is varied, wonderful and plentyful. Whilst we were at Le Coco Beach we renewed our wedding vows in a lovely thatched gazebo over looking the ocean, then went on a horse drawn carriage ride, and back to the gazebo which they set up as an individual table set for 4 and we have our dinner by candle light to the sound of the ocean. It was very special, the staff were kind, did every thing they could to make ouer day even more special. When we returned to our room they had covered it with petals. Very romantic! The beaches are white sand, the water clear turquoise with coral reefs. You can hire free of charge pedalo boats, canoes and go on the glass bottom boat to see the coral. There is a wonderful 9 hole pitch and putt golf course which costs £2 per round for 2 people. Great course, great fun. The children spect part of each day in the kids club which is excellent. They would go for a couple of hours in the morning or the afternoon and do wonderful activities such as go on the boats, play tennis, play golf, paint and draw, dancing, play in the playground park. The staff were lovely and kind and the children took part in a show for which they dresed up in Mauritius costumes and did traditional dancing. There are giant turtles who live in the garden at Le Coco Beach and the children loved to feed them salad. The entertainment in the hotel was good and was like a caberet performance alternating between singer one night and a dance show the next. The all inclusive tarrif includes certain drinks, ie local beer (which is great) and local spirtis. They make certain cocktails which are also included, I can recommend the gin fizz and the blue lagoon! The pool is lovely and clean and the pool bar and food available pool side is baisc but good, eg crepes, pizza, burgers, pitta sandwiches. We went on holiday in May which is in the Mauritius autumn and the temperature was a steady 29C. The hotel when full can house 900 guests, there were only 300 when we were there. It gets full and very hot Dec but starts to get busy from Oct onwards. Not sure if you'd get a lovely padded recliner by the pool every day then? THERE ARE PLANS CURRENTLY BEING DRAWN TO DEMOLISH LE COCO BEACH AND BUILD A NEW HOTEL ON THE SITE. THE STAFF WERE SAYING THIS COULD TAKE PLACE AFTER THE PEAK SEASON AND THEY WERE THINKING IT MAY BE IN APRIL 2007. THEY WANT TO UPGRADE THE HOTEL TO A 4*. I would definately return to le Coco beach. It was a fantasitc place for a young family to go. All 4 of us enjoyed it so much.
definitely worth a visit

My husband and I visited this hotel for Valentines day this year. We had an excellent time, apart from the fact that it rained for 5 out of 9 days!! When it rains there isn't much to do, but the staff were friendly, and we sat and chatted in the bar. The beaches were secluded and absloutely beautiful with crystal clear water, and with the pizza bike and drinks cart driving up and down, it meant we never really had to leave our sun loungers! The food in the restaurant was a bit boring, with lots of fish, but the chef would always make us our own pizza if we didn't find anything we liked. Our flight was delayed by 12 hours, and the hotel were excellent, extending our room, and our all inclusive to make our last few hours on the beach count. The rooms were clean, mini bar stocked every day, and the maid was excellent, definitely worth a visit!!!
I'll go back !

My wife and I , together with my friend , his wife and 14 Month old baby , spent seven nights at Le Coco Beach. This was our first trip outside of Africa and as a result quite anxious as to what awaited us. I had read all the reviews on this forum and many were not good. This merely compounded our nervousness. We departed South Africa on SAA at 10h00 and arrived in Mauritius at 14h06 (SA time). Mauritius is two hours ahead. The trip was booked through WLH and co-ordinated in Mauritius with White Sand Tours , the local tour operator. We landed , picked up our luggage , went through immigration and was met by the representative of the tour company. All of this went pretty smoothly. The trip to the hotel is approximately one hour. We arrived at the hotel and were taken to a reception area where we were given a drink and were helped to complete the neccessary forms for check-in. Again , very smoothly and pleasantly. We were booked into a Villa because we requested that we ( the two families) wanted adjoining rooms , to make baby sitting amongst us easier. We were told that we were upgraded at no cost. It might have been a quite period? In a nutshell , the accomodations were perfectly acceptable. Apparently the all inclusive package is mandatory now. The bar fridge was stocked daily , we could eat and drink all day long , for free. The beaches and the activities were perfect. The staff were all extremely polite and always helpful. From Chandan at reception who remembered my name from when I checked-in to Roshan at the pool bar who remembered what I drank. We found the food extremely agreeable and cannot fault the buffet at breakfast , lunch or dinner. I cannot comment on the state of the hotel rooms because we lived in the Villa. But the Villa was perfect. Serviced daily with a safe for valuables or whatever. Included were mosquito vaporisers which you could turn on at night. The air con stayed on literally 24hours a day. We carried anti-mosquito stuff because of the chikingunya but found that the news of the disease was more hype than fact. Sure , you need to take precautions but not to the extent as described in various media. I have read other unpleasant reviews of this hotel , but my personal experience proved otherwise. When I go back , I will definitely stay here again.
Very Nice

I read some of the reviews, Only After booking my vacation at Le Coco Beach. I was worried and thought that I made a huge mistake. How Wrong I was. We had a fantastic time. Yes, the food was a little tasteless, but that was the case as well at some other restaurants on Mauritius. The Standard Villa was very nice, The Gardens were well maintained, The Beaches clean and the water very nice and the Staff was more than helpful. The whole experience, I would say 8 out of 10.
Le Coco Beach - a great family holiday
from jules2817
Just returned from Le Coco Beach In Mauritius and had a fabulous family holiday. What with all the mixed reviews on the hotel and the Chikungunya outbreak we were worried to say the least in the weeks before we went on holiday. Well, the food was excellent with great variety, the accomodation was fine - we stayed in a villa and Ok it could have done with a bit of new grout in the bathroom but that is all I could see wrong with the whole place. We met for a family reunion and the staff couldn't have been more helpful. They organised a surprise birthday cake for my Mum and just helped to make it a great holiday. We have 2 small children and it was just perfect for them. In terms of the renovation no-one really seemed to have the same answer - I understand that it will probably get demolished next year to make way for a more luxurious hotel with accomodation right on the beach. A shame really as I thought it was nice as it was. It's not luxury but not everyone wants that and you will end up paying for it. They talked about making it a golf complex hotel - but to be honest there are so many golf courses already on the island and not everyone wants to play golf in the heat.
It was OK

We got married at the Coco Beach hotel in Mauritius in June 2004. The staff are wonderful and helped arrange the wedding to make a wonderful day. The hotel is nice enough, the food and entertainment was a bit repetative. We were 'upgraded' to a 'superior' room in a bungalow but I wouldn't have paid extra for it. Although it was bigger there was nothing different than the main block rooms. Rubbish view of large trees which put the balcony in the shade all the time. Got woke up by lizards making odd noises in the night!!! Plenty of ants so don't leave food/drink uncovered in the room. Bathrooms were looking a bit tired. Air conditioning noisy and very cold. The weather was pretty rubbish to be honest. Very windy most of the time and also quite rainy. Think we were unlucky as the weather should have been dry in June. Apparantly there was an anti-cyclone. There are a few trips but mostly its a beach holiday and the beaches are wonderful. Port Louis is worth a visit but nothing special, the market is a bit scary with animals in poor condition. When the weather is bad there is not much to do. We hired a car and it's quite easy and safe to drive around. People live in really poor conditions out there and you can drive for miles and miles and see nothing but sugar cane fields which gets a bit boring! I would go back to Mauritius but would do to Grand Baie as there is more to do and the weather is apparantly better there (in the north). The hotel shop is expensive as is using the telephone in your room. Taxi's are reasonably priced. Most beaches are private and you are not allowed to wander down the beach to the next hotel - you will get told off !!
Very Average

Stayed at Le Coco Beach for six days and it is very average - got upgraded to Sugar Beach for the last 2 days (of eight day trip) and whew, what a difference. Stayed in the main hotel which is pretty shabby. Weather was very iffish - poured 3 of the 6 days. There is not much to do here when the wheather is bad. The food is plentiful if very average. There wasn't much change from night to night. My recommendation is to pay the 20% extra and go to sugar beach. I would definitely return to Sugar Beach, but definitely not to Le coco beach. It is just not up to the standard expected for the price you pay.
brilliant

I stayed at le coco beach for 8 days last week. it was absolutely brilliant, an amazing place. i'd easily say it was my best holiday ever. yes, the paint was a bit gaudy but its a family hotel. however, i took full advantage of the watersports and learnt to waterski, windsurf, wakeboard and sail. the staff were excellent, particulary the watersports instructors, a few of whom went out of their way to help and greeted me every morning by name if they saw me around the hotel, although all of the members of staff were friendly and helpful. the teens club was excellent, and managed to make me and a group of 18-year-old teenage boys to do the activities. not an easy task i would imagine! the food was not outstadning, but very bearable and betetr than i thought .there was plenty of choice and it catered for all religions and dietary requirements.the boathouse was good for lunch, which was free on teh all inclusive package.it was very nice for dinner, although it was expensive. the pool bar had very nice food, although the menu could use some variation.the sea was beautiful and crystal clear, most of the time hovering at a temperature of around 29 degrees celsius. the pool was big, clean and warm.the rooms themselves were fairly basic but very liveable.they were cleaned and restocked the mini-bar every day and everything was in working order. all in all my holiday was unforgettable. it was beautiful, and i lvoed every minute. i would recommend le coco beach to everyone, especially families with children, although tere were plenty of older people there too. i would love to return to mauritius one day, relive the memories and see the picturesque beaches again. it was amazing, a holiday of a lifetime p.s. by the way, if you do go to le coco beach, make sure you try a 'sunburn' - a delicious non-alcoholic drink that i drank in excess
Fabulous Time! Didn't want to leave!

What a place! I mean, I read the reviews on Trip Advisor before I travelled to Mauritius with my girlfriend for a two week all inclusive holiday and I was a little bit worried as some people really didn’t seem to have enjoyed their holidays at le coco beach. I have to say we were speechless, it’s such a beautiful place. Okay so the paints getting a bit tired on the main building, yes a bulb blew in our room and the extractor fan fell out of the bathroom ceiling but come on! The staff were excellent and just a phone call away whenever we needed them. The setting for the hotel is nothing but perfect. 5 beautiful stretches of white sandy beaches, crystal clear Indian ocean that was 28 degrees c and like swimming in an aquarium! The facilities at the hotel are fantastic. Sailing, snorkelling, swimming, windsurfing plus all the motorised “extras” you’d expect plus a great pool. We stayed all inclusive which I would definitely recommend. The buffet style meals are excellent with an amazing variety of choices on offer. There’s something for everyone every time. To top it off, if you do get a craving for luxury there’s an amazing “Boathouse Bar & Grill” which is absolutely brilliant. If you are AI you get an £8 discount off a meal and can still drink free wine, beer etc. The food at this a la carte restaurant is some of the best I’ve had. It’s not cheap if you like shellfish but meat main courses are extremely reasonable and cooked to perfection. We both had a tear in our eye when it was our last day. We’ve had the holiday of a lifetime. People have slated this place a bit and I’m gutted that these reviews may put people off the place. PLEASE, don’t let that happen. This hotel/experience/paradise has given us some of the greatest memories. Ok so there are birds flying around… WHAT DO YOU EXPECT??? The entertainment on an evening can be a bit cheesy but that’s half the fun and it’s perfectly easy to avoid. The staff are so friendly and a lot better to be around than the Italians! Snigger! Anyway, what a trip. It’s a tough journey but if you want a bargain this place is great. I can imagine though that if you weren’t on AI it may cost you a fair bit. The renovations you may have read about will not happen until 2007. In the mean time I suggest you get yourself there before they rebuild and up the price. We paid just £1400 for two weeks AI and it was worth EVERY PENNY!!! Have a great trip and feel free to email any questions to beninmarlow@yahoo.co.uk ENJOY!!!
We've spent several holidays at Le CoCo Beach and each one has been fantastic. The last time we took our grand-daughter who was age 4 at the time and she loved it. It's good for families and couples. The reef is good with lots of tropical fishes to be seen when... more
