We spent two nights at the Marycuilter hotel. The hotel is resonably priced and i must say the rooms are very well presented and a good size. The Hotel itself is situated on the outskirts of Aberdeen on the banks of the River Dee. Adaptly the restuarnt is called the... more

Poor Room But Great Staff
This was my first time at Norwood Hall while on business in Aberdeen. This is a fabulous building set in superb grounds. The house is very traditional Scottish, with great wood work and stained glass. My greeting by reception was first class and I felt really welcomed. My room No 50 was poor. Down a horrid corridor with creaking floors, smells and chipped paintwork. The room was small, needing renovation and very poor given the quality of the public areas. Housekeeping standards were not good with soap left in the shower from the last guest, an eye drop vial on the floor and mould round the windows. I am sure they do have better rooms, than this. Breakfast was much better. Attentive local staff, great buffet of food of good quality served in a fantastic room. It does need more lighting for morning time, but would be very atmospheric in the evenings. Again check out was a good experience, and generally the staff more than made up for my poor room.
Average
I stayed at the Norwood whilst on business in Aberdeen. The building itself is lovely with plenty of old world charm and beautiful public rooms. It is situated in Cults which is a quiet residental area outside of the city centre (about 5-10 mins in a cab priced £8). I arrived early in the afternoon and enjoyed a glass of wine with complimentary nibbles in the library whilst I read the day's papers. In the evening I dined in the Tapestry restaurant - a lovely room. The food was average. I ordered an 8oz steak which was OK but not the best cut of meat I have to say. The service from waiting staff was excellent, however. My major negative point about this hotel was the room(57). It was clean - but otherwise it was rather old and dated. The tiles and bath surround were rather mouldy and stained. The view was non-existent - looked out onto the back of the kitchen through a dingy net curtain. The soundproofing is also non-existent. I could here other residents chatting in their rooms - and was even treated to the moans of one resident having an orgasm in a neighbouring room. Would not stay here for leisure purposes - but does the job for a business overnight.
Wow, suprised to read all of the bad reviews.......I Loved It!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow, I cannot believe all of the bad reviews!!! Are we talking about the same place???? WOW, some people are just really unhappy in life! I am new to trip advisor so I am trying to go back and review some of the places that I stayed over the last year or so that I really enjoyed. From the moment we checked in to the Norwood Hall Hotel we were in awe! The architecture and woodwork in this building is amazing!!! The cozy feel of the old wrld charm, the staff, the food, the beer…..ALL of it was GREAT! We stayed in family room which was pleasantly decorated with antique furnishings and beautiful enormous windows that offered a beautiful view of the courtyard below. The rooms were very clean and well kept and the beds and linens were very comfortable and soothing after our 12 hour flight. It was a very relaxing place and I enjoyed being located on the outskirts of the city surrounded by lush landscaping. The food was great and our waitress was even better. She was very kind and polite and told us stories about the History of Norwood Hall; as she used to live there as a child. All in all I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone traveling to Aberdeen. I will without doubt return despite all of the negative comments.
Very pleasant hotel
I had a very pleasant stay in the Norwood hotel. It was lovely to enter the hotel and see a roaring log burning fire. The room was large and comfortable with an adequate bathroom. The staff were a great help. My lugggage had gone missing and they willingly tried to track it down for me. The only downside was the breakfast. Not what I'd expect from a four star hotel. There was choice but I have experienced better. The hotel is not in the centre but on the outskirts of the city so eating in the evening can be a problem if you don't want to eat in the hotel. I would happily stay ther again and is certainly one of the better hotels in Aberdeen
wedding booking disaster!!!
after attending a family wedding here my fiance, and i thought it was the most beautiful and perfect place for us to get married. un fortunatly the response we recieved from staff at the hotel was very un -helpful and unprofesional.to start with we had to pay the postage on the wedding brochure we got sent out, even though the money wasnt the problem it was the principal. we then called for an appointment to see the wedding co-ordinator,being told she would call back were still waiting how rude!! we finally called back for a show around since our hearts was set on this venue, but to our dissapointment the so called manager was useless, we were left standing around not knowning a thing it was like speaking to a brick wall. after complaining 2 days later they agreed to another appointment for us to see a more senior member of staff, taking my contact details and arranging a personal call that night yet again im still waiting!! we have decided that norwood is not for us and are getting married else where so good luck anyone planning there wedding here!!
Management response from RIchotel 21 Nov 2006

In response to the review 'wedding booking disaster' I am really upset to read you had such an unpleasant experience. Norwood Hall is locally famous as an excellent wedding venue and we pride ourselves on our high standards of customer care. However, it appears we did not live up to this on this occassion. I hope that you can contact me directly on this matter and I would be delighted to understand in more detail your experience. I am aware you have chosen elsewhere for your big day, but I hope that I can improve the service for the future. Richard Ellison General Manager 01224 868951

New Management
I typed in Norwood Hall and it led me to this site. I was dumbfounded when I read the review given by an American gentleman. I have recently stayed twice at the Norwood Hall and also attended a Christmas Party evening. I can only say that the service and staff were of the highest calibre and nothing was too much trouble. I was lucky enough to stay in both the old and new parts of the hotel and both were very comfortable indeed. Depending on your taste, it would be better to indicate, when booking,if you wish a modern room or prefer the "olde worlde" charm. Both, however, have all the relevant requirements for a hotel room including telephone, tv, satellite, tea making facility etc. The meals were excellent and the cooked breakfasts are especially worth getting up early for! The hotel is set in an idyllic location, surrounded by trees and is very quiet, considering you are only a mile or so from the hustle & bustle of the Bridge of Dee shopping complex. The only slight matter that I would bring up is the narrow road leading to the Hotel itself. However, this is probably not the hotel's problem as they do not own the ground outside their area and the road is not that long anyway. At least there is ample parking at the Hotel. I congratulated Mr Forbes, the new General Manager, on my relaxing stays and he was delighted. He previously "ran" the Waterside Inn in Peterhead and was well thought of there by staff and guests alike. He is going to put his own ideas into use at the Norwood and hopes to make it one of the best hotels in the North-East. I, for one, would not bet against that. Well done, Norwood Hall.
A very frustrating experience!!!
I stayed here for a week in January (2003). As the title of this review states, this was a very frustrating experience! The concept of an historic estate mansion turned into a boutique hotel I think is great, especially in Scotland! But there were so many problems at Norwood Hall, I'm not sure the people that own and run that place will ever be able to sort them out! Although the Hotel is on somewhere between 5 to 7 acres of land, there is only a paved road leading up to the little mansion/hotel, really no place to walk around the forested grounds. The current management seems to have a very difficult time figuring out how to make operations run smoothly. I stayed in the two story addition, built about 5 or 10 years ago, something like that, while the mansion itself is vintage 1860's, somewhere around that period. My room, although clean and comfortable, was very, very small!! One of the staff members showed me one of the rooms in the mansion itself, and they are far bigger, and quite spectacular in their antique look (four poster beds with canopies, big picture windows to look out of, historic period appointments, etc.). Some of the staff members were very sweet and nice and friendly and professional. Others were downright unprofessional and nasty. The food was okay, except for one meal, which was great. It's like staying in a home, but the people running this hotel book a lot of weddings, business meetings, and local people coming in for lunch, etc.,so any feeling of being a special guest, as I was there in Aberdeen, Scotland, sightseeing, having come all the way from California, is lost very quickly with all this commotion and other types of guests I saw there. Also, the English booking agency I booked my stay there, neglected to tell me that they were doing construction on the Hotel, I found out it had been going on for months, and was to continue for months more---the noise, and scaffolding and construction vehicles and cordoned off area and unfriendly co feeling one would like to get staying at a Scottish estate mansion, turned into a "quiet" boutique hotel. I did meet some nice staff members while there, and some nice guests who were also staying there. But, the general manager, who is a nice guy, but as far as I am concerned doesn't know what he is doing, blamed me when I finally got fed up with the lack of professionalism there. It was quite a little week-long adventure, but not the kind of adventure I wanted to have. I am glad for the neat staff members I met, and the neat guests I met (and some of the housekeepers were very sweet and did a great job!). I was very angry when I left this hotel, and I feel sorry for those staff members who were very sweet, and made every effort to do a great job. Norwood Hall Hotel is right on the southern edge of Aberdeen, in an area called Cults, next to the Dee River. I wish the general manager and the staff much luck in getting things sorted out (one staff member should be fired, though, because of her abusive, unprofessional behavior toward me), but whether they will be able to, I doubt it. I won't stay there again.
