La Pirogue lies in an inviting setting on the beautiful west coast, near the village of Flic en Flac and 25mns from Port Louis, the capital of Mauritius.
Its 35 acres of tropical gardens front a reef-protected white sand beach nearly a mile long with the bougainvillea-clad cottage-style accommodation offering a relaxed atmosphere.
La Pirogue is right next door to its sister hotel Sugar Beach Resort, with its wide range of amenities available to all guests.

Myself and my wife got married at La Pirogue and thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. From the moment we arrived in Mauritius we found the people extremely friendly with the hotel building on this to the point that we felt truly pampered. Overall we would rate this hotel very highly. It's certainly the first time that I ever felt that I had to write to the general manager on our return to tell him how pleased we were with our experience. Anyhow what you really want to hear is the stuff to watch out for (which should be taken in context to our 9/10 rating).

All inclusive: Really this is the only way to stay as prices in the hotel are high for both drinks and food. It is also worth checking with the staff when it comes to some drinks. We drank cocktails all holiday some of which contained spirits that could not be sourced locally so we found we had a bill from some of these drinks when we checked out. The drinks and food menus were a little confusing in this area.

Superior Rooms: We were upgraded for one night as part of our wedding package but found the Superior Rooms not be a great deal bigger than the standard ones. The extras in the mini bar and the robes were nice but not sure it would be worth paying for.

Our standard room bathroom was a little tired and the tile grout a little grey in places but overall they were very clean.

Flic en Flac: It takes about 20-30mins to walk into the village. Not much going on here - the odd restaurant and bar (which were pretty inexpensive in comparison to home) but nothing of great interest in terms of shops or entertainment.

Beach Hawkers: The hotel's beach is basically private but they do allow Beach Hawkers to tout for business - mostly selling jewellery, clothes and boat trips. They are very polite and will leave you alone but some do offer decent trips on boats that are cheaper than the holiday company. We went Game Fishing and on another boat trip around the coast. Both had a chance of seeing dolphins en route. Fishing was about £30 each for four of us on a boat for half a day. Same price each for the boat trip which included a lobster barbeque on a more secluded beach. Had a fab time but had lots more attention from Beach Hawkers there. Be prepared to haggle for everything if you're interested in any of it!

Port Louis: Found this a bit disappointing. Very hot and busy particularly in the undercover markets but probably worth a visit once. Don't take a taxi though. It will cost you around £17 where as the bus is about 50p

Currency: The country has strong French influence and Euro's are accepted on equal terms as Rupees.

Hotel clientele: Not a huge amount of English (which was nice actually). Mostly French I'd say. Definitely no riff raff there which was good!

Entertainment: A bit repetitive every night. Cabaret singers mainly but there is always the Sugar Beach Resort Hotel next door to check out instead. The All Inclusive allows for eating and drinking there too.

Service: Waiter service was sometimes a little slow at the Blue Bar in the evening but we were ordering tricky cocktails most of the time. Almost not worth mentioning really.

On the plus side, we found the food, the service in general, the ambience, the pool, the beach, our wedding and all its extras to be fantastic. The birds and geckos and the snorkelling all great (although the glass bottom boat wasn't up to much - free as it was) as were the dolphins and whales we were lucky enough to see on our trips. The mountains and coast were also beautiful from our adventures on boats but we regret not seeing some of the sights inland.

We also stayed at Le Coco Beach on the other side of the island. This didn't really compare even though they are sister hotels. Young, inexperienced staff and more English riff raff there! The snorkelling was better but that's about it.

La Pirogue is highly recommended from my point of view anyhow.

Well I can only say this was the best holiday of my life! As you arrive to Mauritius and you are taken to your hotel you cannot help but think what the hell I have done because everything looks really old and you feel like if you were to roam the streets you would get mugged.

Fortunately from the moment we arrived at the hotel those awful thoughts disappeared into the distance. We were there on our honeymoon and were treated like royalty from the moment we arrived - a cocktail was waiting for us and were told we had got a room upgrade with a beautiful sea view.

The room was lovely and brightly furnished with our own separate balcony and were literally 100 yards from the sea.

The service at this hotel was absolutely out of this world and the staff were really friendly. The beach was raked twice a day, the sunbeds were washed everyday and the leaves on the trees even got cleaned every night!

The food was good but can get a bit repetitive but you could go to the Hotel Sugar Beach next door for an alternative.

There is a good selection of drinks that were included in the all-inclusive package and the bar used to make up a cocktail special every night (I never asked what went in it though) and the mini bar is even included in the all-inclusive price.

Just returned from a week at La Pirogue - had a lovely relaxing break, it's a perfect location if you simply want to sit at a resort and chill out. We got a little bored by day 3 and hired a jeep for 2 days to explore - recommended, there is much more than beach to Mauritius! Far cheaper to do this than go on set tours.

Food at hotel was high quality - the salad bar was fantastic, as were the buffet breakfasts. The a la carte dinners (break up the monotony of buffets I guess) were rather hit and miss, and we had a very mediocre meal in Citronella using our half-board credit. I disagree that you should go all-inclusive. You could never eat and drink enough to justify the price difference! Found the prices reasonable, equivalent to Dubai prices (where we are from). Cocktails about 4/5 pounds, beer 3 pounds, large 'proper' pizzas about 7/8 pounds. Staff were super - friendly, helpful and far better than staff I've encountered at so -called 'luxury' hotels.

Rooms - we had a standard (half of one bungalow) room, bit dated in terms of furniture, but clean and bright. Lovely setting but make sure you get a room away from the central dining/entertainment area as the band can go on till late! Try rooms 50 to 80.

Entertainment - different bands each night, from mediocre to good. No beach bars/clubs in the area itself but we did go out of season so maybe there's more of a buzz in the high season - but we wanted peace and quiet anyway!

Pool is lovely though freezing cold! And the 'towels' are simply pathetic. Cheap, small and nasty, take your own!

This hotel is absolutely gorgeous!

The rooms are all individual huts that go round in a shoe horse shape and overlook luscious green gardens. There are also some rooms that look out over the beach but ours was perfect. We got married in the gardens and couldn't have asked for anything better.

The food is delicious, a huge variety of dishes as it was a buffet. We wish we hadn't gone All Inclusive though as we were still stuffed by lunchtime from the 3 course breakfast!

Our only down point on the hotel was that there were hardly any drinks included in the All In option. No spirits other than rum and only wine and beer included.

They had a variety of sports - crazy golf, table tennis and some water sports too.

Beautiful beach and fantastic "infinity" pool.

Mauritius is such a beautiful place all in all so we will certainly be going back!

We had booked the AI deal but the onus was on us to make sure we ordered off the "correct" menu as everything had to be signed for. Its very confusing as people stay here b&b, half board, full board, fully inc. (wine with meals) and all inc.

My Husband went to reception to clarify several points on this theme (at beach bar pina colada all inc but at the blue bar it wasn’t) only to find the woman in front checking out saying "I can't have a bill for £900 I'm all inclusive". The manager offered my Husband a room upgrade when he had made the point about feeling like a 2nd class citizen at the bars/ restaurants when having to ask whether his order was included in the all inc. or if we had to pay extra?

We were happy with our room and went back to say so only to find out he had already "let" it to someone else!! So we had no other option but to re-pack our belongings and move to the furthest away bungalow in the complex! The food was excellent although it was embarrassing having the head chef call me "Lady Diana" every time he set eyes on me (I look nothing like her).

We went on a couple of trips - Port Louis only to find nothing much there and a boat trip from hell the weather was so foul to say it poured of rain would be an understatement. I'm sure there are many fine hotels etc. in Mauritius but we wont be back.

As soon as we arrived at the Hotel, we were treated like royalty. We got married at the hotel, and we had the best day of our lives there.

The way the staff treated us was more than perfect, words cant describe how much we loved staying at the hotel.

It was so clean and tidy there, and the grounds were out of this world.

On our wedding night, the manager of the hotel came and sat with us, which I thought was absolutely brilliant!

We were made to feel so special all the time we were there.

We were so sad to leave the hotel, and we will miss all the staff so much.

We will definitely be going back there, and I cant wait!!!

It was the best holiday ever, and my compliments go out to all the staff that work at this amazing hotel.

This is a lovely hotel where the staff are only too pleased to help you in any way possible. They make you feel welcome from the moment you walk up the steps and they ring the bell to announce a new arrival! The only down side to mention is if you do not go “AI”. You have to sign for all food taken even if you are all inclusive, so we saw the prices!!!! For lunch having just a toasted sandwich each (with chips) plus a small beer and non alc. cocktail would set you back around £17!! The allowance given for the Paul & Virginie Al a Carte restaurant is measly at 475 rupees (around £9), bearing in mind that the lobster dinner costs around 1700 rupees!! Other than that, the cleanliness of the place was marvellous as is the beachside setting. The weather was not great when we were there, but we were told it was unusual for the time of year.
