What a difference a day makes
from A TripAdvisor Member
After an overnight flight and a minibus trip through the rainy streets of the town suburbs we arrived tired and irritable. Check in was standard and a cool drink was supplied. We discovered that the couple we were sharing the holiday with were given a room at the other end of the resort. The trip was in celebration of our wedding anniversary and we were sorry to discover the room was twin bedded !! The next morning the sun came out and we discovered that we had in fact landed in paradise, our bedroom was changed to a double and we began to enjoy a great holiday from then on. !! ( by the way it was our 30th ) The half board option is ok but we found that upgrading to all incusive was very good value for money. A beer costs £5 and not thinking about the cost made them more enjoyable. This hotel is great for couples, try next door the sister hotel if you have a family holiday in mind. The evening entertainment was mixed the dancers were good and "some" of the singers could sing. All in all a great location and hotel.

We enjoyed a fabulous time at La Pirogue. We had stayed at the Belle Mare Plage before, but La Pirogue is better. Fantastic service from such friendly people. We stayed half board and the food was great, The rooms are really nice and cleaned twice a day. The grounds around the hotel are magnificent and beautifully well maintained. The only complaint I would have, if I had to, was that the gym at the nearby hotel is a bit basic. If you are concerned about Chikungunya, as we were, dont worry. We didnt see a single mosquito in 9 days! We will definately stay again! If you are thinking of staying here, dont hesitate, just book.
Great family hotel

This hotel was excellent. We had two standard rooms which means a building to ourselves. The rooms and bathrooms are excellent though they do lack storage space. The outstanding feature of this hotel is its setting which is in the most amazing and well kept tropical gardens overlooking a prisitine beach - paradise. The two older children (8 & 6) where in total security and loved the kids club and other activities on offer, especially the tennis lessons with Kamil and Eddy. Our 22 month bay was well looked after by the babysitter. We chose the all inclusive option which is expensive but does let you relax and choose what you want, when you want without counting the pennies. The staff where excellent and could not do enough to help. A great bonus is that we can use all the facilities of the Sugar Beach resort next door which added to the already large choice. I was glad to be staying at La Pirogue rather than Sugar Beach as the layout and rooms are better suited to famillies though the food was superior at the Sugar Beach. We did not take great advantage of the waterskiing as this is shared by the two hotels and the wait can be quite long. Outside the hotel we saw the dolphins in the bay which was a truly memorable experience and the older boys took surfing lessons at nearby Tamarin with Roger from the local surf shop by the beach.
Heaven on Earth

We have just returned from 10 days at La Pirogue. This is what holidays are all about. Previous reviews had built up a level of expectation and we were not dissappointed. The flight by BA was long and overnight but fairly comfortable. We managed some sleeep. We were a party of two couples just into our 60s. We arrived at the resort at 9am and once booked in the little road train takes you round to your thatched bungalow and we were unpacked by lunchtime. We had a standard bungalow which is back from the sea but in a very pleasant forest of palm trees. The superior bungalows are the same but slightly bigger and nearer the sea. All the resort grounds are immaculate and maintained constantly. You breakfast and dinner in Thatches which is a buffet but has tremendous choice. Even though it is a buffet you are spoilt by the waiters all the time and nothing is too much troube for them. Lunch if you are on fully inclusive is taken in the Paul et Virginie restaurant or the beach bar although it is from the same excellent menu. We had lunch in the restaurant nearly every day and our waitress Elise made sure we had the same table and excellent attention on every occasion. This amounted to a three course lunch nearly every day which does help to pile on the pounds. You can watch the sunset from the beach bar as the sun sinks down into the sea and this is very memorable. There is entertainement every night and a show on most nights. The singers were excellent and the dancers put the same amount of effort into their routines every night. We did have a meal in the sister resort of Sugar Beach but were very dissapointed at the food and also the overall ambience of the restaurant compared to La Pirogue. We chartered a catamaran for a day and got to see dolphins and flying fish as well as snorkel from the back of the yacht and have a fish barbeque prepared for us. We spent half a day in Port Louis and also visited the Botanical Gardens at Pamplemousse. We had a days excursion to the South West of the island and got to see how they make coffee and sugar and rum from sugar cane. Only two minor complaints. We ate one night in the Paul et Virginies restaurant on the A La Carte menu. We were very dissapointed. The wine waiter just seemed to want to sell us expensive champagne and although the fish dishes we had were excellent there was very little vegetables to accompany them and they were not very well cooked. The service was also extremely slow. Next to the Beach Bar on the beach is a volley ball area. It was extremely annoying that every night when people gathered to watch and photograph the sunset and have a drink that a group of staff or customers or both would have a game. They were extremely noisy and there was a high risk of a football landing amongst the customers in ther bar. It would be a simple matter to move the volley ball court to another part of the beach. These are fairly minor issues and did not spoil the overall holiday The vast majority of visitors were French and South Africa with only a few people from the UK. The natives are extremely friendly and are justly proud of their island. We loved Mauritius and thought La Pirogue an excellent holiday resort and one that we certainly intend to return to.
Absolutely Bliss!

We stayed at La Pirogue during August 2005 as part of our Honeymoon. The hotel was a contrast to the Sheraton in Dubai where we had just come from after 4 nights. La Pirogue is absolutely heaven, peaceful and beautiful. The entrance is welcoming and you can see the beach and sea from the reception area. The room are small cottages giving you a sense of privacy whilst being able to look out and see the gardens, beach and sea. The beach is long and soft, with plenty of sunbeds for everyone. The pool is large with jacuzzi area. There are plenty of activities to do, with free watersports, football, badmington, mini golf, and excursions. The staff are the most helpful I have ever experienced and always smiling. They cant do enough to help. The sunset view is awesome and i would definately recommend La Pirogue to anybody visiting Mauritius.

My husband and I spent our honeymoon at La Pirogue and could not have asked for more! We were spoiled from the moment we arrived till we left. The staff are so friendly and helpful and really cannot do enough for you. The wonderful Paul and Virginie restaurant was amazing as were the beach barbeques and nightly shows. If you can afford to go all inclusive I would recommend it as it is quite pricey for food and drinks otherwise, and there is plenty of choice on the all inclusive option. The pool and beach were well maintained, and the watersports on offer were great - the snorkelling was breathtaking!! We cannot wait to go back.

Stayed for 8 nights half board with my girlfiend and my mate and his girlfriend (all aged mid twenties) end of July 2005, and had a fantastic lazy holiday. Hotel was amazing, on arrival we were welcomed by hotel manager, given cocktails, hot face towells, then taken to rooms - sorry, cottages on golf buggys. Cottages were lovely, clean and spacious, great views over the palm tree lined gardens down to the sea. The pool was great, a bit cold at times, especially in morning when sun hadn't warmed it up, but looks incredible. The beach is right next to hotel, so you can lie on beach and jump into the pool still. It must be one of the most stunning beaches I have seen, watching the waves crashing in over the reefs from the jetty was superb, so relaxing. The only problem on beach is the "hawkers" trying to sell you jewellery/clothes/excusions, this happens constantly as beach is not private, most of them are nice enough and we had a bit of fun with some, but when they wake you up or interupt a nice read, it can be a tad annoying. We all thought the food was really really nice, it was a buffett, but there were around 10 chefs all cooking the food fresh was you walked around, so many choices which changed daily, so there is something for every taste. There was a seperate a la carte resturant, but we didn't go as cost extra. Breakfast was also realy nice, loads of fruit, yoghurts, cereal, bacon, eggs, pancakes, started the days of perfectly. Drinks cost quite a bit, we eneded up getting a taxi to the spa at flic en flac from hotel entrance cost a couple of pounds there and back, and taxi driver waits for you, got bottled water, beers, spirits, cig's, snacks etc really really cheap. Evening entertainment wasn't really that, well, not for us anyway. We spent first evening at hotel bar, but was pretty pricey, so after evening meal, we just went back to cottage and had few drinks outside cottage. There Were a couple of bars in flic en flac, but in all honesty, we were always too tired. In the day there was a pool workout in the mornings, quite funny watching some people join in, internet room, crazy golf, beach volley , table tennis, basket ball, scuba diving, canoe's, Windsurfing and sailing. Staff were great, couldn't do enough for you, very polite, there was even staff v's guests football match, was really good fun played in tremendous spirit between people from all over the globe. Weather was really nice, was about 27 degree's most days. To make the most from the sunshine, you had to get up early as got dark around five/six. Was told by some locals that March/April is best time to visit, bit warmer and longer days. Watch out for holiday reps trying to charge loads for excusions. Our holiday rep tried to get up to go on a day trip to port louis for about £40 each, we ended up getting local bus from just outside hotel gates, it cost 70p and was an eye opener, got a taxi back for about £5 all in. Port louis was really good by the way, some good shopping, bars, resturants. All in all, had a brilliant time, wish we went march time as more sunshine hours and would have been a little warmer, but a magical place that made us all smile inside, would go back if i could afford that type of holiday every year.
Great hotel with only one minor complaint
from desbaggie
all the other reviews have been spot on about Le Pirogue, beautiful location, good dining, friendly staff, big spacious pool, clean spotless accomodation and excellent night time entertainment. The only downside on the entertainment is that the hotel is populated by about 90% French holiday makers. The French are elequant, stylish, slim, poised and look great on the beach, but they don't party like their Anglo-saxon neighbours. So the good news is no premiership football shirts, no tattoos, ear rings(on men), no mothers screaming at children called Tiffany or Jason, no gratutious swearing, no being woken up at 2am by a party of drunks singing all the way back to their hotel room but the not so good news is that the band are playing to an empty house from about 11pm. By midnight if you see anyone applauding or dancing to the band its likely to be the one other English couple/family who are there with you. This is suprising as the all the bands we saw were incredibly talented playing a mixture of traditional Mauritian music, combined with pop, reggae and salsa. We almost felt obliged to be there to enjoy the music and so it was difficult to understand everyone else disappearing off to bed. Maybe thats what the French do best! Couple of recommendations would be to go all inclusive, the food, dining and drinks which are inclusive are excellent. However if you have to buy meals or drinks separately they are expensive. Also the superior rooms are worth the extra cash, with great views of the water, a lot more spacious and almost every one has its own hammock slung between two palm trees. So nothing to complain about? well the only irritant for me on the whole hoilday concerned the beach bar, which in itself is idyllic. A great bar area with comfortable seating to listen to the waves and watch the sun go down. For my wife and me the favourite part of the day is aout 6pm to 7.30pm when we can sit and have a couple of drinks before thinking about getting ready for dinner. le pirogue beach bar is fantastic for this as its a relaxing setting with wonderful sunsets. Herein lies the only complaint. they insist on playing dreadful europop disco muzak. If you can picture a scene of early evening with about 5 middle aged couples trying to take in the peace and tranquility of an Indian ocean sunset while also having to endure california dreaming set to a hideous disco beat, thats the beach bar at Le Pirogue at around 6.30pm every evening. I did ask them to turn it off sometimes they did and one other time they said the music ( actually you can't really call it music, its just noise ) was hotel policy. A great pity that this odious sound of a tinny thumping bass has become so ubiquitous that it is despoiling the peace and tranquility of the sun going down over a beautiful island in the Indian ocean.
Great Hotel!

Stayed 16 nights at the beautiful Pirogue Hotel. Very happy with the service, the room and location. The food was exceptional. Nothing more you could wish for at breakfast. The beach is perfect for those wishing long walks. The pool is so lovely. Plenty of activities for those that wish to join in and the fitness centre is good with very pleasant staff to help out if needed. Drinks are rather pricey if you are not all inclusive! A hotel to be highly recommended- So glad we made this hotel our choice for our first visit to Marvelous Mauritius.
Better tha Caribbean
from Steve0756
We wanted a beach holiday in November, but with going to Antigua, Tobago and St Lucia, we wanted a change. We had considered nearly all the hotels in Mauritius with price not an issue. We chose Pirogue because of location and a hoped for relaxed and easy atmosphere. We were not wrong...The only downside was the early morning arrival and a limbo wait for the room - the superior bungalow and worth every penny! The staff were amazing and we could not fault the food in any of the restaurants. Citronellas was very good and Paul and Virginies was as well, but stay cool, they do serve you eventually! The entertainment was about the best we have seen, from a very young but very talented team. Yes, there are the boutique and spa hotels in abundance but we were very pleased... and if you like a sunset, it's spot on! You must try the Champagne Breakfast!

Myself and my wife got married at La Pirogue and thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. From the moment we arrived in Mauritius we found the people extremely friendly with the hotel building on this to the point that we felt truly pampered. Overall we would rate this hotel very... more
