A bit of an uneven experience
Really beautiful and comfortable lounge and reception area. I was not in one of the special rooms, but OK, mine was newly painted and had new carpeting, although the bed light flickered with a bad contact and the television was strangely located so that it was impossible to watch. For Aberdeen these days 95 pounds was a bit on the high side for the room, but not totally unreasonable. A real nice feature was free broadband access - they really scored points for that. Ask for a room on the quieter side though (if one exists), as the... more
over priced and no atomsphere
We stayed in the carmelite hotel from sun the 19th to tues 21st of nov 2006. Our stay was a bad experience from start to finish. The first room we were allocated was in one word.......terrible!!! It was on the second floor, firstly the hallway stank of must!!!! The room was tiny and there was a hollow in the bed.......we were expected to pay 220 ponds for this!!!! We asked to be moved, we were then moved into one of their exective rooms at an additional charge of 50 pounds per nite, it was like walking into a different hotel. The room... more

Glad you upgraded to an executive room, the hotel is going through a two phase refurbishment and your original booking was confirmed for the 2nd floor. The leak in the ceiling is sadly something that we cant anticipate, particularly when it is no fault of the management team! We do try hard to please and price all our products competitively, although I do appreciate that this is a matter of personal taste and judgement. Our web site will be live in a week or so and hopfully the pictures of the rooms will give travellers a better insight into what we have to offer. If we can tempt you to come back then please contact the management directly and we will see if your unfortunate unasatisfactory experience, can be bettered with a little pampering from us!!

Can't believe your in Aberdeen
From the moment we stepped through the swing door it was hard to believe that we were still in Aberdeen. This chic, modern and simply stunning hotel is a hidden treasure. We were greeted with a smile as we checked in and were directed to our room. The room wasn't huge but the space, decor and layout had been well planned and the room was warm, clean and comfortable on such a cold November night. We were meeting friends for dinner so we gathered in the reception bar area for pre dinner drinks and then taken to our table. The menu had a... more

Glad that the whole experience was enjoyable. The menu has only just changed this week so your feedback on the food is greatly appreciated. The city has just announced a substantial investment in the whole infrastructure around the hotel and the Green area. There will be a considerable upgrading of buildings, lighting, and a new 34 executive apartment development behind the hotel started this month. The hotel will be the centre of Aberdeen's most historic area in the city and we look forward to it!

Look who's coming to dinner... We certainly won't be back.
We didn't stay at the Carmelite but booked a table for dinner on a very positive recommendation. The hotel looks great and the reception area, lounge and dining room are beautifully decorated. We were impressed. However on telling the staff member that we had an 8.30 dinner reservation, clearly there was a problem. We were abandoned as staff scuttled around, setting up a table by the fire escape. Now, mistakes happen, but surely we should have been told there was an error, apologised to and offered a drink at the bar? Not so. Eventually we... more

So sorry that your experience was a bad one after so much positive coverage in the press it is really disappointing. It's a shame you hadn't mentioned any of this to your waiter/waitress when problems arised or when you paid, as we could have attempted to rectify the issues there and then. if you are contacting the hotel then perhaps we can speak to you then, as I have no contact information.

loved the carmelite hotel
Satyed here in September for a weekend with my husband. Its said that first impressions are the best and we wwere very impressed by the chack in which was efficient but very personal. We stayed in the very sumptious Japanese suite and as the name implies it is oriental in style. We also managed to view a couple of the other suites, all very unique...one even had a huge round bed! Some fabulous touches like the champagne cooler beside the huge double roll top bath and a bath tray for the glasses. The bed was one of the most comfortable I... more
poor attention to detail. do not stay here even if you are on expenses
I'm a medical rep who stays away for 60+ nights a year. This was the worst value for money hotel I have ever sayed in. Arrived at 1700 for a room meant to be availible for 1400. Told that room was nearly ready and asked if I wanted a tea or coffee. Astonished and insulted when this was delivered with a request if I wanted it charged to my room or of I wanted to pay the £2.00 just now.. This was a taste of how this hotel would bleed my expense account dry at every opportunity. No parking availible, either use the on street meters... more

I am sorry that your experience at Carmelite was not a good one, particularly as we had only just reopened after a 12 month refurbishment. The check in procedure and charging for your cup of coffee was unfortunate. The parking on street is free overnight, and you can feed the meter the previous evening for the following day .There are two multi storey car parks within a 1 minute drive from the hotel! There were a number of snagging issues with the in room services, phones and plasma's and it would appear that you experienced the lot!! The free wi-fi is available in most areas however there are five walls over a metre thick that cause signal problems, this is now backed up in room with a hard wire internet connection which is also free. We have had fabulous reviews in the press about our restaurant and again I'm sorry that your experience was not to your expectation. We would love to change your opinion about Carmelite as we do not have any pretences about what we are. If you are coming back into the city centre of Aberdeen then why not drop in and ask for David or Elaine and let us demonstrate what we are doing day in day out to impress all of our private and business clientele. Richard.

Grampian
From the outside it is an attractive looking hotel, very old and decadent. The interior is nice in the lobby and the central location is ideal and is pretty much opposite Belmont Street (just off Union Street) which has a good array of bars. The rooms however (or my room) was small, cold and the view that I had of the part of the hotel that is being renovated was horrible. The bed was uncomfortable and felt like I was staying in a room at my eighty five year old Grannies house. Although it did have one saving grace the classic... more

Carmelite was opened in May 2006. This review relates to the previous owners. Richard

Absolutely Wonderful
An absolutely wonderful hotel in the Heart of Aberdeen. This hotel is the oldest hotel in Aberdeen and is in a word Astonishing. The staff is amazing, the chef is as good as they come and the rooms are beautiful. The walls are adorned with wonderful paintings, and there are some nice stained glass windows as well. Just a few feet from Union St, this hotel has it all. Location, Great Staff and wonderful accomodations. The best place to stay in Aberdeen.
