Charlecote Pheasant Hotel Reviews

8 / 10
Dec 2007, Mr Carl Beeston

We wanted to get away for a relaxing few days before the Christmas rush so we decided on a few days away in Stratford-upon-Avon. The hotel itself is about 5 miles way from Stratford and that is really the only down side to this hotel, there is nothing near to the hotel... more

Lovely hotel in beautiful surroundings
We stayed here for a weekend at the beginning of June as we have always wanted to go exploring this part of the country and an offer came up to stay here. It is certainly in a beautiful part of the country and the drive through the village to get there is gorgeous with quant little cottages and stunning surroundings. First impressions of the hotel were very good. With the offer that we were on, we were staying in the recently re-furbished part of the hotel and they have been done to a reasonably good standard for accommodation of this rating. The rooms were quite large with all the usual facilities found within (double bed, tv, tea/coffee facilities). The bathroom was also of very high quality with an excellent power shower above the bath. As we got there late on the Friday evening, we decided to eat in the hotel restaurant and whilst the standard of the carvery was reasonable, it was not an out-of-this-world meal. Not sure on the price of the meal as 1 evening meal was also included as part of our deal so we opted to use it for this. Drinks at the bar were on the expensive side (£7 for 2 drinks) but as we found out throughout the weekend, Stratford does seem to suffer with inflated prices everywhere. We had a fault with our room in that the air conditioning was not working and as the weekend was one of the warmest so far, it made it slightly uncomfortable when in the room as the windows would only open a very small amount (no doubt as a security measure). We first reported this to a maintenance looking chap early on Saturday morning and he promised us that it would be looked at that day. However, when we returned later that evening, it had still not been fixed. When we enquired at the reception desk as to the progress made by maintenance, she informed us that that had not been instructed and therefore the chap did not log it! The receptionist was very apologetic throughout though and could not re-locate us to another room as the hotel was almost fully booked and the only rooms free were in the part of the hotel not yet re-furbished and therefore did not have air conditioning anyway. We returned to the room and tried keeping it as cool as possible but were surprised by a knock at the door later on that evening. When answered we found a waiter with a bottle of champagne and bucket of ice who said it had been sent by the hotel manager as an apology that they were unable to do anything to assist us...a very nice gesture we thought! What we also came to discover when checking out was that they had also cancelled all of our drinks bill ordered from the bar from our total bill. Overall it left a very good impression of the place despite the little hiccup and couldn't praise the staff more for their concern.
A lovely weekend away
We stayed at the Charlecote Pheasant for a long weekend at the end of April, taking along our 9 month old baby. Our hotel room was large, very clean and furnished to a high standard, having been recently refurbished. We took a travel cot, but the hotel do provide cots if needed. The hotel is situated next door to the lovely Charlecote Park which is worth a visit. We did not benefit from the outdoor pool as this is for summer months only, but there is so much to do in and around Stratford-Upon-Avon in a weekend, we wouldn't have had time anyway! We didn't have our evening meals at the hotel restaurant, but we did have the breakfast. Highchairs are provided for little ones. There was so much to choose from, including a full english cooked breakfast, croissants, tea, coffee, toast, selection of cereals, fruit, yoghurt, muffins, fruit juice and more. The staff are very friendly and helpful. All in all, a very pleasant stay.
NEW YEAR
We wanted a 2 night break away for New Year and we certainly got it. All the staff were very pleasant and helpful and the accommodation was perfect. We had a carvery meal on the first night and chose the 5 course dinner dance and disco for New Years Eve. (No children were allowed, which was just right for us.) The ages of the guests varied from about 20 to 70 year olds and every taste of music was catered for. We would recommend this hotel to anyone wanted a relaxed but entertaining time.
Great for New Year
We stayed over new year for one night. The break included a dinner dance and the food was excellent. We had been given the choice of the carvery or the dinner dance, so we decided to skip the carvery for the better sounding menu. The food was of an excellent quality without being too filling over the 5 courses that we were given. The room was spacious. We only required a double but ended up in a room with a double and a single bed, so giving us extra space, which was lovely for relaxing in before New Years Eve night. The room was clean and the bathroom was good. Breakfast was a buffet style so arriving when fresh sausages were brought out was a bonus. It was clean and comfortable and it was great to be out of the city.
Perfect for Cost
Needing a place to stay while I took an exam at Moreton Morrell/Warwickshire College, I booked a 2 night stay at this hotel. I booked directly through their website and got a fantastic winter rate (over half off) on the smallest twin room available. The room was perfect for needing a place to sleep, shower, and get dressed. The restaurant was about a B+ and the wait staff wasn't always friendly, but the entire hotel worked for what I needed it to do. Breakfast in the restaurant was included in the price of the room, but having it delivered cost a great deal of money (more than necessary). Location-wise, the hotel is in Wellsbourne, perfectly between Warwick and Stratford. Overall, I would stay again.
Like an old peoples home at Xmas
We stayed here at Xmas. It caters for pensioners completely. Everything from food menu (mushy food) to entertainment. There were very few people under 70 years old at this hotel, and I would not recommend it if you are any younger, certainly not for a Xmas break.
A warm welcome
I stayed in a family room with my wife and two young children. The hotel was fairly basic but very reasonably priced although the food was a bit overpriced and wasn't as good as it sounded. The accommodation was adequate but the best part was the staff - they were only too happy to please. Language was a bit of a barrier with some but eventualy they understood! A great place to stay with a family if you want the closeness to Stratford, Warwick or Oxford.
very dissapointing hotel
i luckily didnt pay for staying here as it was through my work, if i did i dont think id even stayed a nite. i stayed in the new block , the bathroom was nice even if a little small, but the room itself was terrible. cant have been decorated in years all the furnishings were old an the quality of the bedding also not up to scratch, one duvet even had a hole in it! the restaurant is also very poor, although supposed to be open till 10 i was informed at about 9.30 that it was now closed, for them to make me a sandwich seemed he biggest hassle in the world and it was absolute rubbish at £4.50 odd again just aswek it was on expenses. the main meals were off a menu , they had a cavery but didnt bother opening it any nite, the meals were fine nice enough but definatly no more than that, wetherspoons quality really, only difference being steak an chips was £13 very overpriced. a couple of the staff although foriegn were extremly helpful and a credit to the hotel, maybe the manager should follow suite as he was rude an unhelpful. having stayed in many decent hotels around the world i can safely say this is the worst hotel ive stayed in.
Lovely hotel
This is a lovely place to stay. The older part of the building dates back several hundred years and even the rooms closest to the road are very quiet. My room, although suffering from a surfeit of yellow chintz, was extremely spacious and offered a small study area as well as a massive bathroom. You can enjoy a spot of lunch in the gardens and although the outdoor pool is a bit of a token size a quick dip certainly helps you cope with the heat on a hot July afternoon. My only possible gripe would be with the breakfast staff who lacked experience and concentration and seemed taken aback that anyone might prefer coffee to tea in the morning. The place offers good value accomodation for such a characterful building ( make sure you don't get stuck in the modern block) but be warned if there is a concert going on across the road in the grounds of Charlecote Hall you will be disturbed if you plan on a quiet evening in.
Biased opinion
*** Disclaimer***I was given a room at reduced rates due to knowing a sweetheart that works at this fine InnThe Pheasant is a beautiful country inn with green and flowered grounds. a small pool, tennis courts and even a little "bunny house" in back that has some of the cutest critters around. The rooms were on par with other hotels but i will be honest, to me a room is a bed and bath nothing much more.Staff at the Inn were polite and helpful. We had a flat tire which the auto club was to repair as we were off site-seeing, the office offered to hold our keys and direct the matter as we were gone. They were also a great source of information for day trips based from this area.Lastly was the meals, nothing to say but fantastic.Service with a smile and good country cooking...you wont go away hungry.Highly recommend for a few nights if in the area.
