Alveston Manor Hotel Reviews

7 / 10
Apr 2007, Mr R Shenderey

Nice hotel. Very conveniently located about 5-10 minutes walk just over the bridge into Stratford upon Avon. Rooms okay sized and clean. Beds just about comfortable. Staff were mostly French speaking it seemed and not too friendly but not unpleasant. The leisure facilities... more

Not Brilliant
Hotel is situated right next to an ugly petrol station. Despite the picture showing beautiful grounds - which infact on arrival were very tiny and the photo had cleverley cut off the petrol station. Executive suite room costing £160.00 a night was extremely cold - and bathroom towel rail was unheated. Infact bathroom was so cold didn't even use it - used the facilities in the spa area. Called the maintenance man 3 times - each time was told he would be along in 5 mins - eventually 1 hour and 15 mins later he arrived - and did get a ceiling fan working but still not good heat. Breakfast was absolute chaos and not enough seating - people were waiting outside in corridor and it was well past 10am. Would not go to this hotel again.
Never again, Dont go here.
Good location for town center. Back of hotel looks more like a holiday camp. We were lucky enough to have one of the rooms in the oringal old building, our friends how ever booked 3 smoking rooms to find out when getting there that the hotel had changed to a non smoking hotel but they had only booked 4 weeks prior on Expedia web site which gave them the choice of rooms and they had the holiday camp rooms at the back. The hotel post code sent us half an hour out of our way to the wrong place. Breakfast was bad we had to wait out side on the window seal for 20 miniutes to wait for a table to be ready for us.Once inside sat down had to wait a further 10 miniutes for our order to be taken.Alot of the fruit had run out, no crouissants with the cooked breakfast there was just one small mushroom, poached eggs were hard, black pudding was under cooked. The coffee was the only good thing. We have stayed in many hotels around the world and never had such a poor service for breakfast, we thought that the British prided them selves on a full English Breakfast (quote the name). For the money £164 for one night we expected alot better ,and would never go back.
A Wonderful Stay
My girlfriend and I stayed at the Alveston Manor for two nights in December. Everything about the stay was perfect, the room was lovely, the bed was very comfortable, bathroom was spacious and clean. All the staff were extremely friendly and did everything they could to make our stay as comfortable as possible. Also, try and make it up for the breakfast because it was a huge selection and all very good. Highly recommend.
Alveston Manor not bad, not great but ok.
I have to say I was a little apprehensive about staying in this hotel after reading some of the negative reviews on these pages but the stay went well I have no real complaints. The rooms are nicely furnished clean and comfortable. Everything worked, the staff were polite, not particularly friendly but not rude either just businesslike. The breakfast was not the best I have ever had but it wasn’t bad. I would have to say this hotel is ok not fantastic not wow but ok. I note that the advertised room rate for the weekend I stayed was £202 per room per night. I think that I would have been disappointed had I paid this amount. The hotel isn’t worth that kind of money but if you can get a cheap deal don’t hesitate. The hotel is handy for the town centre and theatres and the beds were comfy. Two weeks earlier I stayed at the Grovsenor this hotel was cheaper and much friendlier, of the two I think I prefer the Grovesnor but if the Alveston were doing specials I would stay here again.
What a mistake...
They say you should always begin & end with something positive, whilst I'll do that, this review shows that previousTrip Advisors' reports should always be taken heed of! So, to start, the hotel is in a very conventient location, and has very attractive grounds. That said in our first room the shower only worked on very, very hot - sufficient probably to cause injury. First reponse was that someone would look at it the next day (thus ensuring that it couldn't be used for 50% of our stay). The manager suggested another room - "slightly larger but you won't be charged the extra". By this time it was quite late so a porter helped my husband move and thus it wasn't until later that we found that there was no TV control, teapot, or soap. And it was the next morning before we realised that whilst the room was nicely painted, it wasn't of the standard of any 4* hotel in any european city we've styed in recently. As it was slightly bigger , it had one large chair and one small chair, stained and rather scruffy. The tabkle had a glass top - under which spilled sugar had evidently been there quite some time. The view was obscured by the large number of dirt finger marks all over the windows and the frame was missing large chunks of paint. The sheets had numerous small holes in them as though they'd been attacked by a mad smoker or moth. Breakfast was chaotic. I've never stayed in a hotel before where they ran out of toast racks. The carpet in the dining room under the table where fruit juice was kept is shiny with okld stains and your feet stick to it as you move. Makes you think about the whole hygeine thing........ Plates were hot, which was good, but so hot that they could not be touched, which was not. Meanwhile the food was cold and poached eggs were hard. Apparently there were too many people at breakfast and we should have gone earlier...... The majority of the staff were european and spoken english was apparently a problem which probably accounts for many of the problems. Effective management and traing could turn this into a good hotel, or at least a better one. I observed 4-5 trips just to get tea, milk, toast, butter and a 15 minute wait for a second cup. The evening meal the night before had some of these problems, too hot plates, too cool food, but less pronounced as there were fewer people. So how to end on a good point? Reception staff were helpful, professional and pleasant and so gave a good imprwession at the begiing of the stay. bUt it's a pity aboput the rest. Would I stay there again? No. The Good Hotel Guide says that nowhere in Stratford can be reccomended, certainly this one can't. Why would I pay £161 per night and why would anyone pay £16.50 for such a breakfast?
Nice upgrade pity about the heating
Alveston Manor - stayed there in August as part of a special offer. £79 B&B per night and free upgrade. The offer also had 20% off dinner but ate out every night so cannot comment on this. Was upgraded to the Elizabeth II suite which was very nice. The suite was opposite the staff offices so you could hear them coming in and out but I wasout for most of the day. The other thing that I noticed about Alveston Manor is that from the photos on their website it looks like the hotel is in a middle of acres of woods - I was surprised to see it was next to a petrol station and most of the grounds were behind the hotel. Room very clean - bathroom also. Wonderful power shower. Ironing board and iron included which . The only downside was that the TV channels were basic - even the Sky ones were boring. Also the heating was not on at that time - so it was a little cold in the rooms. The reception staff said it was being fixed but it was sorted out the time we were there (3 days). Cooked breakfast was a bit skimpy but you could fill up on the yoghurts, fruits and cereals. I did like that it was only a short walk to Stratford Upon Avon’s city centre so could eat out at the other restaurants and see a Shakespeare play etc. I was surprised that they did try to charge me the full price for the room on check out - £119 but I did tell her it was a special offer. I also had to tell her that they did not send me an confirmation email only giving me a reference number on the phone. They honoured the £79 price. I was surprised that they did not make a note of this on my booking as they knew I needed to be upgraded.
Get out of my Manor!!
To keep this simple I would have an overall review of average. I was lucky enough to buy this trip away with saved vouchers from a leading supermarket chain. It would be safe to say that I would have not stayed in the place otherwise. It is very pricey for the distinctivley average decor, rooms and food. A few further points; 1. Unless you own chelsea FC dont go to the bar. It is extortionate Lager shandy..... £5!!! There are better pubs with character out of the hotel and right all with views of the river. 2. The restaurant is clearly in line with bar. Most starters are £12 plus and mains are at least £25. I was celebrating my 30th and found a cracking little family run restaurant off the tourist trail. Russons on Church street. the pub opposite The Windmill is one of the best in Stratford. It was excellent and if you like seafood then try it. trust me! Trying not to sound like a miser I just expect to get what you pay for and for what I would have paid (£150 a night) the Alveston Manor is not up to that..... Nowhere near. It is looking tired and dated and is trying to keep its "best in show" mantle which I am afraid to say was lost a long time ago
Disappointing
August 2006. Booked 2 rooms; 1 single and 1 family. "Family" room had no third bed (they had made an error with the booking), so my son ended up on a camp bed, but we were still charged for a family room. Room smelt very damp and was dusty. Single room remained hairdryer-less throughout stay Carpets in corridors threadbare and tatty. Liked the pool, but it was not exactly child-friendly. Staff seemed over-worked (busy w/e after recent airline terror threats), but treated complaints by ignoring them. Good location, very convenient for local theatres/shops, but difficult to cross busy road at peak times. Over-priced and ? not worthy of 4-star status.
Pretty good hotel - great location
We booked the hotel on a special offer and paid around £80 for b&b. I have to say for that price I was pretty pleased overall. We had one of the rooms in the original building which was oak beamed and very nice, a little small - but what do you need a room to be enormous for? The room and bathroom were very clean and tidy and pleasant environment. We ate in the restaurant in the evening - the food was very good, I did find the restaurant hot and this spoiled it a little for me. Be careful with bar drinks as they are very expensive - £17 for 2 doubles! Breakfast was disorganised and I have to say this is the only fault I could comment on with the overall experience. I would recommend the hotel for location close to the centre.
Very tired and small rooms
I stayed here with my Partner for one night on Saturday, i certainly do not think this hotel is 4* i would personally give it a 3*. The room we stayed in was very tired and very small, not what you would expect for a 4* hotel. We only had one drink in the hotel as this cost us £14 for two glasses of wine which is very expensive. Two good points about the hote is the location which is great, just a short 5 minute walk to the shops, resturants etc. Also the leisure facilities were great. I think if you can get this hotel at a very good price then it is worth it for the location but that is it, i certainly would not pay going rate to stay here.
