Pleasant hotel. A bit difficult to find, but only a couple of miles from oxford town centre. The room was spacious and clean, if a little cold. The reception staff tried to be helpful, but her English wasn’t the best, but finally managed to book us a taxi into town!... more

Stomach Ache?
My fiance and I stayed at the Hawkwell House Hotel on 27th June 2003 on a bed & breakfast basis. The room itself was satisfactory and the reception service was efficient. Room service ends at 10.00 pm and the bar downstairs closes at 11 - not great for a weekend. Breakfast is served from 7am until 10 am on the weekend. As such we both came down for breakfast at around 9.30am. We found no vacant tables so selected a dirty one and asked the waitress to clear it. I then had to ask the waitress again to clear the table but it wasn't until i complained to the head waitress that the table was cleared. We then ordered tea, coffee and toast which also failed to materialise. Hot food was served in 4 silver tureens. I found virtually raw bacon, sausage that was only cooked on one side, granite like hashbrowns, a mushroom broth that i presume could have been fried mushroom at some stage, scrambled egg scrapings etc. The most perplexing thing was that the chef wandered out of the kitchen checking the tureens as he went. I can only presume that he thought the quantity and standard of the food offered was perfectly acceptable! We commenced our journey on an empty stomach - i'm just glad that we didn't have dinner at the hotel if the breakfast is anything to go by. I tried to speak to the manager but he was unfortunately unavailable at our time of departure. I was advised to put our complaint in writing but so far the hotel hasn't even bothered to acknowledge my letter. To say this hotel charges £115 a night is a disgrace. Take my advice stay in the local holiday inn express. You'll get a decent room and a breakfast you can eat!!
