My Husband amd I stayed at the Riu Tequila for 1 week in April and had a fantastic time.
The Thomson flights were very good - lots of leg room and good entertainment
All the staff at the hotel are incredibly friendly from the cleaners and gardeners to bar staff and management.
The food was excellent, there is a massive choice at breakfast, lunch was always very good with food being cooked while you waited (loads of salads, king prawns, steak, fish, pizza, veggies, puddings, ice cream - you name it) Dinner was also very good and there were a choice of 3 restauarants (although you did have to be up pretty early to bookthem - 7.00am). The choice in the evening was even better than lunch time with something for all tastes.
The rooms are spacious and we found them very clean - the cleaners came everyday. the free minibar is good aswell with bottles of Corona, Pepsi, 7UP etc and also optics with vodka, rum, tequila etc..
The pool areas was nice and there is always someone around cleaning the flower beds, or sweeping paths. We always managed to get a bed and we weren't round the pool at 7.00am.
Overall this was the best holidays I've ever had, we usually travel to the Med and this has spoilt us - we have already booked to go back next year. I have read the response from the lady that also travelled in April 08 and can't believe her comments but I guess everyone wants something different from a holiday, but if you want a holiday with good food and drink, a relaxed atmosphere where you can do as much or little as you want, with friendly staff then don't hesitate to book this hotel.
The entertainment team worked very hard all day, keeping and adults and children entertained and the shows at night were always good.

All round, a very dissapointing holiday. Bedroom was dark, dingy and grubby and had to be cleaned again after our arrival. Would rate the room a 2 star, not 4 star. Americans were up from 3am every morning to put their towels on the sun loungers, therefore after 8 am, no sun loungers were available!!!! As it was American Spring Break, the hotel was inundated with teenagers who were very noisy (screaming and shouting around the hotel at all times of day AND NIGHT). They got extremely drunk, lying around the bar area, spitting on the floor, etc... When we complained to the reps, they told us they were having big problems with the teenagers being so rowdy and unruly.
The beach area is eroding by the day and the Mexicans are desperately trying to save it. The sea is very dangerous, with strong undercurrents and we witnessed at least 4 near-drownings while we were there. By the end of our 2 weeks, the ambulance seemed to be there permanently. The red flag was flying all the time, so swimming was impossible. The shuttle to the beach (old golf buggy) broke down all the times, so couldn't be relied on.
The only positive about this holiday was a fantastic tan, but what an expensive tan!!!
We would not go there again and couldn't wait to come home.

Where do I begin! What an amazing holiday, will 100% return here. This is what an AI holiday should be. EVERYTHING was included in the price, from food to towels and cocktails to icecream on tap. Staff here made our holiday. They involved us so much and there were sports and entertainment n all day, as well as different night time entertainment every night for 14 nights. There's also a night club! I really don't have any complaints. The beach is starting to erode, but this does not effect your trip to the beach, it is still well maintained. Although it is an hour from Cancun, it is very cheap to get the bus there and we got a taxi back for next to nothing. We are looking to return next year.

Me and my boyfriend went here for to weeks in early March. it was a brilliant holiday, and a very good resort. The weather was brilliant, although the night we landed it was raining but this has stopped within a couple of hours and we never saw this again. The rooms was very big and clean, and you had 2 king size beds pushed together. The food did get very repetitive after about a week and i was craving fruit and vegetables when i got home. Although you could book for the Steakhouse and Mexican restaurants there was a long queue to book this, and to ensure you actually got a table you had to get up at about 6am. We only managed to book the mexican restaurant once during our stay disappoitedly. I agree that there are not nearly enough sun loungers for al the guests. You would walk past the pool early in the morning and see sunloungers had already had a towel over them and reserved. I much preferrred the beach to the pool area. We did have to get up slightly earlier to reserve a lounger but this didnt bother us that much. It did get busier the second week we were there as it was spring break but we didnt expereince any problems because of this. the entertainemnt area in the complex was quite small & there were never any seats available, or if they were they were right at the back and you couldnt see anything. The club they had as well was extremely small so we gave it a miss.
Overall we really enjoyed the holiday and would recommend it to anyone.

Having been here about 4 years ago i new what to expect and certainly wasnt dissappointed. Due to being overseas i was unable to book direct with thomson and so had to book flights locally and the hotel online. Flights were with thomson and they are good, seat back IFE is good, get the upgrade for a fiver as it is worth it for the length of the flight. Arrived and the airport is much more efficiently run than it been before, still took ages to get bags but hey ho. Arrived at the hotel to check in smoothly and head to the room, it was situated on the upper floor of the block which is best as you get higher ceilings. Little towel animal greeted us on the 2 good size double beds. And cold beer and soft drinks in our fridge.
The hotle is due to be refurbished this year and while it may need it in a few places it isnt run down by along way. The pool is large and the swim up bar is excellent, after a couple of visits they know what your having. The pool is eitherside of a restaurant one side for the games and one side left alone. The Animacion team are excellent and there is ALWAYS something going on in the daytime. Everyone has a favourite ours was Pablo. Each night there is a show and whilst they vary in content and quality they are all still very enjoyable.
Breakfast was good, pancakes/hotcakes too nice for words, lunch got a little repetitive and dinner was excellent, not too keen on the Asian night on the saturday.
Weather was good sunny and not too warm, and it was one big downpour for the last 2 days (which was quite good to watch and people watch in!)
I think the highest commendation the hotel gets is the sheer number of people that return year after year which now includes us. Roll on March 2009!!!

I have just spent a great 2 weeks at the Riu Tequila with my mum and it was the best holiday I've ever had. I am nagging my mum to go back next year!
The rooms are immaculate. We had a small flooding of our toilet on one occasion but the situation was seen to and fixed within about 30 minutes. The balcony door has 2 doors; one to get in and out and another one with a net cover over it to stop insects getting into the apartment, which was a big reassurance.
The animation staff at the hotel were the highlight of my holiday. I was almost crying when I had to say goodbye! They are so friendly. They are all crazy and certainly know how to have fun. If you do not want to take part in an activity they don't pressure you, but its all the more fun when you do. I played water basketball which was a lot of fun as the staff join in too. Its funny watching them exhaust themselves as they try to get the ball from the other team.
The entertainment at night was excellent. In other hotels I have been to the entertainment has been rubbish, but the entertainment at the Tequila was so good. My favourite shows were the Michael Jackson Show, Grease, and Moulin Rouge. The animation staff are also included in the night entertainment as they are all experienced dancers. When the entertainment finishes, the staff come and sit down for a drink with you and socialize which I thought was really nice.
The only thing we could complain about would be that we had a number of power cuts over the 2 weeks. They only lasted a few minutes and the staff explained that these things cant be helped in long-haul destinations. Everyone received a letter apologising for the inconvenience and a free gift which was delivered to our hotel room.
My stay at Riu Tequila was the best holiday I've ever had. I really miss all of the staff and I cant wait to go back next year.

Hola! Just returned after my 4th visit to the Tequila and once again had a fantastic holiday.
We stayed for 2 weeks and apart from a small flood in our bathroom the stay was perfect.
The rooms are large and airy and very clean, the maids do an amazing job 7 days a week and our room was spotless everyday (unlike how we left it each morning!)
On arrival I requested an iron and ironing board and some diet coke. The iron and ironing board was delivered to our room the next day and diet coke the day after. A gentle reminder at reception for the diet coke was required which is very unusual.
We had a leaky toilet about a week into our stay and I was a bit disappointed with the initial service from reception, we reported the leak first thing in the morning and it was still the same in the evening.
When we got back to our room we phoned reception again and they sent a maid to mop it up but it really needed a plumber and even I could see that and I know nothing about plumbing!
The hotel didn't seem 100% full so I'm surprised the reception staff weren't as efficient as normal. As usual the Thomson reps were no help when we had the flood, they were too busy pushing the trips!
The following day a plumber fixed the leak and we had 3 calls from reception (between 5-8pm) to check everything was ok. We then requested more diet coke for our fridge and it arrived within 30 minutes! We then had another call checking we received our diet coke!. It was as this point I could have unplugged the phone but at least the service had returned to its normal high standard.
That evening we had booked a reservation in the steak restaurant and were pleasantly surprised to be led to a table especially for us with a complimentary bottle of champagne from the hotel for the inconvenience in our room.
The hotel grounds were fantastic, there were gardeners milling around all the time and the effort and hard work they put in to maintain the grounds is evident just by looking around.
Each morning we were up at 7 and on the way to breakfast one of the staff was raking the sand and another was wiping down sunbeds! I was usually on my sunbed by 8am and then there more staff checking the pool and fishing out leaves and dead insects. They proceeded to do this throughout the day so the pool was always lovely to swim in and bug free!
The food was fantastic in all the restaurants. I have never seen such a huge selection of foods available for breakfast! The pool restaurant was exactly the same at lunchtime, there was so much on offer some days you really didn't know what to have. They even have a Mr Whippy ice cream machine that you help yourself too! Perfect!
We ate at the steak restaurant 3 times and each time the meal was delicious. The rest of our stay we ate in the buffet/main restaurant and couldn't fault the choice available or the quality of the food or service - both were outstanding.
The Animation team were the highlight of our holiday! How they look so cheery and happy everyday working the hours they do is amazing! We took part in the stretching classes, water aerobics, water basketball, water polo, shuffle-board, horseshoes, and bingo!!! I took 4 books away with me and only had time to read one! All of the activities are great and you only participate if you want to. If you say no they don't push you.
Don't be put off if you are under 50, all these games are fun (even shuffle board) and a great opportunity to meet other guests and have a laugh! If you are luckily enough to win one of these activities, be warned that you are required to go on stage in the evening to collect your certificate and prize! I'm now the very proud owner of 6 certificates! It’s a shame that 4 of them say WINNER OF BINGO and not something like the riffle shooting! There's always next year!
There were a couple of beach parties with a live band whilst we were at the tequila and these were great fun. The chefs come out and cook the food on the beach and one of the chefs creates an ice sculpture with a saw!! Not too be missed! All the animation team are at the beach party so stand away from them if you don't want to dance! you have been warned!
The team arrived at 10am everyday to start activities and then have lunch with the guests at 12. They then returned to the pool side at 3pm for afternoon activities. You can do as much or as little as you like, so get involved or sit back and watch, both are fun! There was a swimwear fashion show once a week on the poolside and after you can but the bikinis, swimsuits etc. These are very reasonably priced and lots of people seem to buy them.
The evening entertainment was varied and some shows we enjoyed more than others. We loved the shows that the Tequila entertainment staff put on, they were fantastic shows and very professional. Our favourites were the Michael Jackson show and the Crazy show. We weren't as keen on the shows that outside professionals did, they were often traditional Mexican shows/dancers etc.
We had seen many of these before so used these evenings to go to 5th Avenue (5 minutes in a taxi and only $5). 5th Avenue has a huge range of shops and bars and loads of shops selling silver. It's difficult to browse without being asked to look and buy but we didn't want anything so it was easy to walk by.
We had a few afternoons of clouds and showers so that was a great time to check my emails in the sports bar. This bar was open 24 hours a day and you could get food and drink, watch TV, play pool or games, or use a computer. There were about 8 computers so I never had to wait.
I really don't have anything negative to say about the Tequila, I've just booked for next year so am looking forward to another week in March and then two weeks in September.
I have read reviews on other travel review sites that people say the beds are hard, the pillows are hard etc. If you want home comforts I can only recommend you stay at home, this is a great hotel with great food and drink, top staff and loads of thing to do! If you decide to go 'have a great time!'

Excellent service, food, and accommodation. We went for a wedding and everything went exceptionally smoothly.
Whilst away one of our party celebrated a 21st birthday, and the staff arrange a party with balloons, cake, and champagne all with excellent service and at no extra cost.
Would recommend this hotel to anyone.
The only down side to going to Mexico is the mosquitoes - so beware!!!

We have just got back from our honeymoon at the Riu Tequila and I must say it was the best holiday we had ever had.
The Riu workers bend over backwards to help you and nothing is too much trouble. We stay on an all inclusive basis and the food was very nice. I being a veggie food is always a bit of a problem when you go abroad however I am pleased to say not here.
From the morning right into the evening there is fresh food on hand the only problem you have is picking what to have!!
The two swimming pools are lovely even if we did have a snake in one of them but it was quickly got rid off and the beach is just a short stroll away or there is the beach buggy that runs all day long.
The flight out there was brill. We up graded our seats which I would recommend to anyone, however coming home the flight crew were not as friendly and I got forgotten twice when I ordered a drink.
If you do one thing in Mexico it would have to be the swim with dolphins. It was brilliant and out in their natural environment which made it all the more breath taking.
We are planning our next trip there next year for our one year anniversary and can’t wait to get back there!!

This was the perfect holiday. The staff were the most helpful and friendliest I have ever seen.
The rooms were spotless and the grounds very well kept. Food was great, something for everyone, I cannot stress how good this holiday was. It’s one place you just have to go.
If you are looking for a perfect tropical holiday look no further than the Riu Tequila.
If I had one complaint it would be the Canadians, they are possibly the rudest people I have ever met. Both to the Mexicans and other visitors and I am British!!! So that says something. And even they could not spoil the holiday!

This was the best hotel I have stayed in over 27 years! I would give it and the staff 20/10.
Always friendly, helpful - whole place is immaculate - they even have the staff in the pool scrubbing under the waterfall.
Surrounding grounds are so well kept - best entertainment I have experienced - really cannot fault it. It really was paradise!
The only gripe we had was the airplane and staff going out (they were slightly better coming home) so miserable and unhelpful - gave us the wrong local time and told us wrong information to fill out immigration sheets.
Even the Captain sounded bored - TV was rubbish really glad to be off the cramped conditions. Coming home, we had an extra hour's wait - should have left bang on time but the Captain wanted to load lemons, had a glitch and then lost our flight slot. Staff were better though - still cramped and no leg room.
Really cannot recommend this holiday/hotel enough. Fabulous!

We went to Riu Tequila last year in September as a belated honeymoon. It was absolutely fantastic; so much so we are going back again this year!! Something I have never done in the past.
As all the reviews say; the hotel and staff are wonderful. The level of care and attention these people put into ensuring your holiday is enjoyed is top level. The service is first class; they remember your drinks, remember your name and they even give freebies when the bosses are not looking. So they should you say, it’s free. But consider this, how many times have you been in a corporate pub or bar and waited ten minutes to get a drink because they won’t fork out £5 an hour to another barman-in doing so lose more than 4 times that amount in takings. Do problem here, there is enough staff and they fly around like, well, blue-a***d flies! And they smile!!!!
The food was great, sameness after two weeks but that is to be expected. The steak nights are great (especially as I got a free skewer of the biggest and juiciest prawns each time!).
The other theme restaurant night (held at Riu Yucatan) was not to our liking but maybe to some. On the subject of Steak night and Yucatan-I have read other reviews-mainly by Americans complaining about the steak night and also the temperature of Tequilas pool. Can I say it was perfect-it is bloody hot there and it cools you down nicely. We went to Yucatan one day and the pool was like a bath-not cooling or refreshing at all. BTW Yucatan looks dirty and in need of serious work-it is dearer to stay at than the Tequila-I can only assume it is because it is on the beach???
The room we had was cool and airy and had a great look out; animals come to play in the late afternoon just outside our room. The beds are a little awkward sized if you are used to a 4ft6 double or king-size. I think they are 4ft each so it is a bit tight if you like to snuggle up together (well we were on honeymoon!!)
The in-room bar was amazing, leave a dollar or two and you get plenty for all the holiday. On arrival there was a swan on our bed made out of the bathroom linen. Leave a dollar under this and you get a different one everyday! OK a trifle amusement but it makes a difference.
The room was cleaned everyday and was perfect. The shower knocks you over though! Air conditioning and fan make it comfortable-though make sure you leave both on when you are out of the room! TV was good, sounds depressing but let’s face it, you have to do something whilst she gets ready!!! Some English channels and sports. Mr Bean, or El Beano as I call him was very popular and converted me from hating him!
We went into Playa Del Carmen quite often, some great little bars there. One we went to quite often which sold the most delicious ribs and marguerites for about £5. I can’t remember its name but it had wooden and rope swings round the bar for seats. Again, the staff are always helpful. The shop owners on the other hand are a paib but funny with it. Somehow they know you are English just by you walking by and shout things like "lovely jubbly" at you! Senot Frogs is not to be missed at the evening as it is loud raucous and great fun!
Reading the other reviews has made me regret one thing-booking with Thomson; but we have done it last minute again. As people have said, the flights are not great but I hear they have new planes this year??? My advice, avoid the seats near the loo's. I had a 9 hour flight back to the UK with people leaning on my chair constantly as they queued for the few toilets.
The meals were crap-Aldo Zilli? More like Dontbe Silly!!! I researched into flight only and booking diorect with Riu; this is cheaper by a few hundred pounds especially if you have to pay full adult price as we will this year for my step son. This is a little scandalous as if you book direct with Riu, you pay no extra whatsoever for having up to two children in your room. So it pays to shop around, but saying that, we booked late so we only paid £750 each.
Still, it was fantastic; I go back in a month. I have a little apprehension. Why? One reason, when something is so great-you can only be disappointed when you return......can't you? I will let you know in about 7 weeks!!

We booked the Riu Tequila a week before the departure date due to our original holiday being cancelled (still trying to get the money back from ABTA, but that's another story!)
If your looking a for a great hotel with fantastic food, service and amenities....BOOK THIS HOTEL! The staff aren't just helpfully, happy and attentive, they also don't permanently have their hands out for a tip. I would say this hotel is great for all ages looking for a 1st class Mexican Holiday.
We can highly recommend the 'Royal Dolphin Swim' trip, but ChiChin ixa (ok bad spelling but at least I didn't put 'Chicken Pizza!) is very informative but also very hot and there's next to no shade so be prepared.
There is however a downside.....and it's a big one. The Flight is absolutely horrendous. You are crammed into seats that are so narrow even those of an average build were complaining. I also agree with a previous reviewer that the cabin staff are unhelpful.
This said we have booked for next June and will be getting married at the Tequila, just hope the aircraft and cabin crew have improved...watch this space!
