Creeky, overpriced
We found out that our bed and breakfast was, essentially, in the middle of a traffic circle, so we went looking for another place. The Abbots Barton is beautiful on the outside and nicely decorated. The staff was pleasant. But there is a lot of pretension going on. We were grateful for AC in our room, but it did not work in the first one we were assigned. It worked in the second, but then we realized the people above us would keep us awake just by walking -- the hotel is a redone, old estate house. On top of that, the internet access they... more
A welcome surprise
We were passinmg through the city and passed the Abbots Barton Hotel and decided to ask if they had a room available for the night. The receptionist was more than helpful and offered us various rooms, superior double or a standard double and we settled for a special rate of £135 for a standard room and that price also included dinner and breakfast. The room was on the third floor and was a credit to the hotel, clean, fresh and plenty space. The room also had air conditioning and had plenty natural light through the two windows. There... more
Penitential beds, painful shower
Our family were in the U.K. for a family wedding, staying with relatives except for the night before the wedding, when we were booked into Abbot's Barton. The building is lovely and all the staff were helpful and pleasant, but the beds were harder than the one the Black Prince is lying on in Canterbury Cathedral! The very heavy, metal-hosed shower stayed in its holder during my shower, but fell on my shoulder as I turned off the water. The room and bath were quite beautiful, but deliveries began just outside our ground-floor window before... more
Absolutely fine
Having read other reviews of the Abbots Barton, I am beginning to wonder if my wife and I actually stayed in the same hotel! We stayed at the Abbots Barton Hotel for two nights in November 2006. The hotel is located about a ten minute walk from Canterbury Cathedral so is ideally situated for sightseeing. The room that we were given had a small problem with a constantly leaking tap but this was dealt with swiftly and cheerfully by the receptionist who immediately moved us to another room. The room was well furnished and spotlessly... more
Nice hotel, shame about the bed!
We stayed for two nights, while visiting Canterbury for a friends wedding. The hotel is very pleasent, and we found the staff to be helpful, friendly and very polite. On our first night, we had dinner in the restaurant, and we were very impressed at the service. The food was nice too. The bed in our room (203) really let the hotel down, I think I would of had a better nights sleep on a park bench .. well it certainly would not of been any harder. The second night, having been at the Abode hotel all day enjoying a lovely... more
Just awful
The worst hotel management I've ever experienced. Rude, abrupt, got the bill wrong and no apologies at any point in time. The place also has this vague smell of sewage. Stay anywhere else, but not here!
Loved the building
The building is beautiful, the blonde receptionist appeared to by very busy and stressed, slightly rude I felt not welcome on arrival. These prices you charge for a double room I would expect a nice and friendly welcome .
Nice building and gardens...very ordinary rooms
Well what an extremely expensive room, turned out to be a double in the loft above the kitchens. The bed like a rock and just cramped and small. Food in restuarant was very nice. Building and gardens very nice. But for 160 pounds per nite with breakfast its nothing short of a rip off. Look elsewhere.
A reliable hotel for business use
I stayed an the Abbots Barton on a number of occasions over a four month period ending in January 2004. It's in a quiet location though only 15 minutes from Canterbury city centre which was one of the reasons for me staying there as there are numerous places to eat in the evening. The hotel had been recently been refurbished and so was generally in good condition. As a businessman it was ideal for my needs as the rooms were always clean with nice bathrooms though some of the singles were small. Parking was never a problem unless you... more
Average place to stay
We stayed at the Abbots Barton Hotel for 2 nights and although the hotel is nice, clean and the staff very attentive, the restuarant meal was somewhat disappointing and would recommend a walk into town for dinner instead where there are numerous good restaurants such as Marlowe's and Cafe des Amis. Oh and be warned the rooms have no air conditioning!
