My wife and I recently stayed at the Best Western Limpley Stoke Hotel for our wedding anniversary and we had a wonderful time. This is the second time we have stayed in this hotel and once again we were delighted with everything. On arrival the receptionist informed us that... more

what a fantastic stay
I visited this hotel recently with my mother, I must admit having read other reviews I did'nt know what to ecxpect, but I am very pleased to say what a fantastic stay we had, everything from the moment we arrived to the moment we left was perfect. The staff were all very attentive and went out of thier way to make our stay even better. The rooms where very clean and bright as where all lounges and bar areas, the food was excellent well presented reasonably priced and I would not hesitate to recommend this restaurant to anyone. All in all top marks for the Limpley Stoke Hotel and we will definately go back.
Welcome to Fawlty Towers!!
I have just returned from an overnight stay, with friends, at the Limpley Stoke Hotel, and what an experience that was! Okay, let's talk about the positive things first. The bedrooms were clean and the pillows were very comfortable! My friends and I thought that we had booked into a lovely country house hotel, which was described in the hotel's own website as 'a haven for the discerning traveller'. How wrong we were!! This hotel needs a complete refurbishment. There were holes in the carpeting in some of the public areas, and I could go on .................. Whilst the staff were definitely not unpleasant, the greater majority were non-English speaking and found difficulty understanding what we were asking. We got the impression that there was no-one in charge - an unprofessional image was created by staff. Never were we asked if everything was alright or if we were enjoying our stay. We arrived in the early evening and had previously reserved a table in the dining room (after 3 e-mails, which I shan't go into!!), however when we arrived in the dining room it was obvious that they were not prepared for us and we were quite abruptly shown to the bar. Eventually menus arrived - 3 for 4 people - and we sat for quite some time without even being approached for a drinks order. The waiter came to take our dinner order and did not seem to know what was on the menu, and this became very embarrassing to all of us. A mistake was made by the waitress taking our dessert order, and there was no point in mentioning it to her as her English was so poor. The dining room was an absolute disgrace - totally souless, awful atmosphere, windows starting halfway up a high wall, dreadful lighting and a grand piano that hadn't been dusted since the beginning of the First World War. After dinner we went to sit in one of the lounges - it was so cold that we couldn't stay. We then went down to the bar, but at 11.10 'time' was called and we were told we had to leave there and then as the barman was locking up! A bridal fayre was being held the next day, and a notice had been left in our bedrooms to say that breakfast would be served in another room, which happened to be across the corridor from our bedrooms. This resulted in extra noise from early morning on. Although the breakfast was quite tasty, again the service was not good and residents were just left to fend for themselves, with no guidance as to what to do. It was quite obvious that there was a lot more interest in the Bridal Fayre that in the hotel's residents. Our experience at Limpley Stoke Hotel certainly gave us plenty to laugh about, but our advice to anyone thinking of going to it is ....... stay well away. We don't even refer to it by it's proper name - to us it is simply 'Fawlty Towers.!
Destroyed our anniversary!!
We got married at this hotel in 2004, and on the day I booked our anniversary night. You'd think that would be simple enough, but not for these people. Not only did these incompetents cancel our stay for another wedding they had double booked, they didn't bother to tell us until 2 days before we were due to go there, on a bank holiday weekend. Then they lied to us about why they had to cancel. Then they lied to us about whay they were going to do. Then told us they would only speak to us if they didn't owe us any money! Then they went back on promises of what they would do. And finally, after weeks of being ignored by their MD, we got a bottle of cheap sainsbury's fizzy wine and some garage forecourt flowers. Do not go to this hotel. EVER. You'd get better customer service from the bottom of a slime pool than from these bozo's.

Unfortunately I agree we were in a very difficult position and were forced to cancel the booking. We are so very sorry but it happened. Every possible avenue was explored but we could not find a solution. It had never happened before. It was our problem, totally. The couple were very upset and understandably so. In an attempt to compensate for it, we offered a completely complimentary weekend with wine & Champagne. The couple chose to have a meal in a restaurant of their choice with friends, paid for by ourselves, and,we sent a bottle of Piper Heidseck Champagne (not Sainsbury's) and flowers to be delivered by hand to their home. As a small local company we always listen to and always attempt to rectify any problems that may arise in our hotels. In this instance we wanted to make it right and did all we could.

Never again!!!
I was apprehensive about staying here as I have had some bad experiences with Best Western in the past. Where do i start..... Fisrtly I had booked a double room and when I got there was told that they had no doubles so they had put me in a single (with no discount I may add!) When I got in the room I was amazed that they had the cheek to charge so much money for a broom cupboard. There were no morrors in the room at all and after 3 calls to reception they managed to find a six foot piece of mirror with no frame (very dangerous) that they propped up against the wall. I had no tea or coffee in the room which after 3 calls was resolved. The bathroom was so small that at only 5ft 1, I couldent stand up straight in the shower for the sloping roof. The shower also had no hot water and was nothing more than a slow drip. The staff were very unfriendly. When I asked about room service, they told me to go to the pub at the bottom of the road as they were busy!!! I couldnt order breakfast in my room until the morning because they were going to be busy so I had to go without. This really was the hotel from hell. I do regularly stay in hotels as part of my job but this was an absolute disgrace. I am warning everyone out there to stay away!!!
much better than expected
My wife and I enjoyed a very pleasant three day stay at Limpley Stoke, and would certainly return. Contrary to some of the other reviews, we found the hotel above average in most aspects: The location really is superb, looking down a wooded valley from an elevated position. The room we stayed in was excellent. It was clean, very spacious, and benefitted from light from three large windows. Food (breakfast only in our case) was plentiful and of good quality. Variety of items was reasonable if not abundant. Staff members were very polite, friendly and extremely willing to give help and advice about the surrounding area. All in all, a very worthwhile experience
Very disappointing
We stayed here for two nights as part of a wedding party - so got a 50% discount on the full price - and believe me the room wasn't even worth that. The furnishings and decoration were very tired and the room was in need of complete refurbishment. This room didn't even have a wardrobe! The bathroom did look like it had been recently refitted though. The room the bestman and his wife stayed in was also poor, and the room where the groom stayed the night before the wedding didn't even have a shower. There was a large hole in the carpet by the bar and notices around the hotel had been photocopied (rather than professionally printed) and stuck on the walls so long they had become dog-eared and tatty. I did have a look in a couple of other guest's rooms and they were large and well decorated - so I'd strongly advise asking to see your room before accepting it. Luckily the hotel organised the wedding itself beautifully so there were no complaints on that score. But the rooms left us feeling disappointed with the experience.
A Lovely Stay
As a birthday treat I went to this hotel for a two night stay. I was concerned after booking when reading some of the reviews on this site, but when I arrived at the hotel I was amazed by how attractive and grand the hotel is. We were greeted very warmly by reception staff and as some people here have said the rooms were 'grim' I was nervous to enter the room, but found it grand, clean and light with huge windows and a beautiful view and a lot of excess floor and storage space. It was everything I could have hoped for!! Breakfast was yummy and although we had to wait a few minuits while they made up our table, it hardly mattered! The kitchen staff were happy to help and happy to get us anything we needed. Infact all the staff we came into contact with, from reception staff to housekeeping, were smiling, helpful, and polite. This, remembering it is only advertised as 3 stars, and the price reflects that, is good value for money, as it allows you good food, a lovely and quite grand room, in a fantastic castle like English mansion, with AMAZING country side around you. Yes, there were trains, but they didnt run all night, and thats hardly the hotels fault, and personally I could hardly hear them, and they didnt bother me in the slightest. I highly recomend this place based on my stay.
NEVER AGAIN
We arrived for a one night stay with 2 family rooms booked,to be told that they had only given us one family room and a double,no sorry just were fully booked and that it. We made our way to our rooms which happen to be both the same size( doubles).Myself and my husband and 2 children in a such a small room, with no cot (which had been pre-booked). They gave us bad false info on the rooms we thought we had ,£99 is very steep for what we had,it was mare like a £55 room. We found out that they try and keep families in one section of the hotel, as we could tell by the noise of crying babies all night. We decided to go to the bar, who wouldnt,no bar staff around, you have to keep asking reception for someone to serve some drinks, many many times. With the children asleep it was time to ask reception for the baby listenening service which they avertise, only one room at a time can be listened to ,and that was already being done. OK ,I will have the babysiiter they advertise. NO BABYSITTERS, so back to the tiny room to sit and listen to the very very noisy passing trains . MORNING,can things get worse, we all went down to breakfast,to find every table still dirty with all the last peoples b/fast on. I stood next to the kitchen door holding heavy children to be walked past twice by staff. "Excuse me can you please clear a table so we can all sit down " I asked a girl after 15 minutes. Poor selection of cereals etc (compared to other best westerns)_ AND POWDERED SCRAMBLED EGGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have Been to a Lot of Best western Hotels with my Children but I have never had such bad service as this hotel.Yes the hotel from the outside is stunning and its clean inside but the hotel staff just seem to want to get you in and out . 24hour PORTER ,"CAN WE HAVE SOOM WARM MILK FOR THE CHILDRENS NIGHT TIME DRINK PLEASE" "NO THE KITCHEN IS CLOSED" I have never ever known a hotel like this one My advise is STAY AWAY.
