The Menzies Waterside hotel is situated on the outskirts of Bath on the ring road, so it is relatively easy to locate. It is a modern clean hotel which is very much geared up for business clients, with desk and internet connections in the bedrooms. We were at first... more

As a basic, efficient base for touring Bath and the locality it does its job well. The rooms are clean, tidy and well presented albeit somewhat cramped but it is seriously let down but the outside appearance, think 1980's Sixth Form College and the shabby level of... more

Great Value, better than expected!
Satyed here for a one-night Christmas Shopping getaway last week. Arrived early (1pm) informed that early check-in (before 3pm) is chargeable even if the room is ready. Opted to leave the car and walk into Bath centre for lunch, which was about 5/10 minutes walk. No problems checking in our return at about 3.20pm and we were allocated a ground floor car park view room. The room had been refurbished in typical travelodge style with a flat screen tv etc. V comfy bed and spotlessly clean throughout. The bathroom was not yet refurbished but ok for one night - clean but showing a fair amount of wear and tear, especially when compared to to the new furniture in the bedroom area. Only one problem - the room was freezing because the heater didn't work. We were offered an alternative room but I guess the hotel was full and this was a partly finished room with no curtains (it did have a roller blind but not quite the same!). We declined and braved the cold room, which to be honest wasn't too bad during the night. Staff were always polite and curteous, especially considering we complained about the room on a stay that cost £9! Overall would definately stay here again, though I understand that parking will be charged from the new year.
Great Location, Good Value for Money
As previous posters have pointed out, this hotel is part way through a refurb having been acquired by Travelodge. My room was one of the old ones, yet to be updated. It was clean and functional if a little shabby. However, when paying £29 for a hotel room with free parking in expensive Bath with little parking, who cares if the wardrobe is chipped? I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again, especially once the works have been completed. The location of the hotel is great, approx 10 min walk to the main shopping area, free parking as previously mentioned (not sure if this is a permanent thing). The food in the bar leaves a lot to be desired, and I do not recommend you spend your hard earned cash on such nastiness, the only downside as far as I am concerned.
URGENT help from Gordon Ramsay needed
Booked two rooms at £29 per room per night which was a good price to stay in Bath. Surprised as this is actually a hotel that they have acquired so was a little more up market than the standard Travelodge. I'm sure though they will have it working as a Travelodge soon! Check in was ok. Rooms were lovely and very clean and spacious. The food was diabloical and at a hefty price - I'm sure they think they are the Ritz! All food frozen, microwaved (as confirmed by reception)and the smallest portions ever. We received Lasagnes that had been over micowaved by about an hour! Hard as rock and one layer?? When we complained the waitress could not communicate as her english was limited so she just left us without dealing with the matter. No manager on duty so nobody wanted to deal with a complaint. Next morning eventually got a refund but in a very unpleasant manner (apparently it's not Travelodge policy to refund?). Luckily I had taken a picture on my mobile of the food so they couldn't argue. Funniest thing was they offered us a free breakfast after telling them we could not eat there again. Still gave us a laugh and put it down to teething problems.
Cheap and well located but plenty of problems
I stayed at this hotel for three days and it was a real eye opener. Firstly the hotel was in the process of being converted into a Travelodge. Although work was going on there was no noise apart from when they were doing something with the fire alarms one afternoon. I experienced two problems the first was that they did not have a key for my room so each time I wanted to go into my room I had to wait at reception for someone to come and open it up with the master key. I was told mine was the only room like this but when waiting one time the people before me in the queue had the same problem. There was also no remote for the TV in my room. The staff just shrugged it off and said they did not have any spares, not a big problem though. As I spent a lot of time waiting at reception each time I wanted to go to my room though I realised just how many problems the hotel had and I felt so sorry for the staff who were actually really nice and tried their best. Eight blokes had booked four twin rooms for example and all had been given doubles - which pleased them no end, this was apparently as nearly all the twin rooms were being refurbished. As the guys had paid full price the staff bumped off a couple of other bookings to accommodate them. Their attitude was that if people did not turn up it would be ok but if everyone who booked did turn up they would be turned away. I asked the bloke who took me up to my room if this was common and he said it happened all the time. If you make a booking at the low rate they don't care about you they will give away your room to anyone who is prepared to pay more. He said often people turn up late in the evening with a booking and they have to turn them back onto the streets with some excuse about "problems in central reservations". Having said all that I quite enjoyed my stay considering it was only £32 per night . The hotel was tatty and a shambles and there were problems but it was quite funny to get an insight into the world of Travelodge. I am just glad that I did not arrive late at night after a long trip and get told they did not have a room for me and because I know that is possible I will not be going back!
One to watch!
We’re writing this view after the fact and it’s going to be rather short we feel simply because we can’t remember anything bad at all about our stay here. The hotel was just in the transitional period for changing across to the Travelodge family, and yes some of the old décor did look a little tired, but if we’ve ever had a grumble about a particular Travelodge hotel you can bet it’s never been about the general cleanliness of the place and especially that of the bed and sheeting. This place was certainly no exception and we don’t think it’s even worth mentioning some of the mini moans, which are picky and fussy. Ok We’ll give you one to put you in the petty frame: The heated towel rail & trouser press had been removed, which was probably not the fault of the hotel – yet another victim and example of this horrible PC & Health and Safety delusional environment we get rammed down out throats every day. We certainly didn’t want to be reminded (huge sticker explaining) of jobsworth efficiency on our relaxing break!! We arrived early and although we couldn’t check in till 3pm the staff member on duty was fantastic and she immediately presented us with a car parking permit and pointed us in the right direction to take a spot of lunch and some early sightseeing. This was extended even after we checked out so we can’t fault their generosity. Future guests may like to check this policy as the staff member informed us that charges for parking may apply after the transition takes place so our advice is to check before you book! The location was fantastic, just out of the City Centre but close enough to amble back and forth especially after a sampling the local liquids :O) Bath was lovely – we’ll definitely be back and will certainly check out this place once the renovations have fully been completed. We make no excuses for the loving the Travelodge brand – it’s clean, it can be awesomely cheap if you hunt for the deals, it’s unobtrusive, extremely functional and 99% of the time you know exactly what to expect.
A mixed bag
This was a trip for my husbands birthday as we'd wanted to stay in Bath for a while. The location in great, free parking, very peaceful and a short stroll to the centre, either along the canal or around it. (Bath has very friendly wino's, a better class though, they drank bottles of Lambrusco rather than Special Brew) The hotel is now in the hands of Travelodge and will be undergoing refurbishment until early next year. The rooms are currently in a state of being modernised so they have some new features and some old furniture, the beds are obviously currently old, very uncomfortable for 3 nights. However that aside the room was nice, if a little dated, but spacious and we had a waterside room which was fab we had a party of ducks to feed and could see the canal boats going by. Our experience foodwise was a diaster, the rate I booked included breakfast/evening meal but our experience of both was terrible. Awful food, served really, really slowly in a near empty soulless dining room. So much so we left breakfast after the 2 hour war of attrition we seemed to be locked in with the waiting staff and ate at McDonalds for Breakfast. I would like to point out that when I complained Travelodge did refund the food part of the bill that I had paid. The manager (new) was reallly apologetic about the experience and explained that Travelodge had only had the hotel for 6 weeks and were going through some teething troubles. So despite my unhappiness, it was well handled. All in all I wold say that when the refurb is complete the hotel will be a great place to stay in Bath owing to the quiet central location, the competetive price and the free parking which is rare indeed in Bath, I found other hotels that advertise parking but having seen their locations first hand I wouldn't have been very happy with the distance you are from the action. A word on Bath itself, it's fantastic. I thoroughly recommend the Roman Baths, the Thermae Spa and Bizarre Bath (google it you'll find a brilliantly funny comedy walk through Bath) all of which were worth the money paid.
Hotel ownership switch!!!
This hotel has been bought by Travelodge. It is no longer a Menzies establishment. I stayed in this hotel about two years ago when it was owned by Menzies and had a very pleasant stay. I expected the same when I returned this year only to discover that Travelodge does not upkeep the hotel as it should nor does it offer the hotel patrons any sort of courtesy from the front desk staff. I wouldn't stay here again, nor will I ever stay at another Travelodge even though this hotel has a great location (within walking distance to the city center along a nice river walk path).
Not the worst but definately not the best!
Just got back from a two night stay at this Travelodge and glad to be back home! Good points: Great location, 5-10 minute walk to town centre Free car parking with good size car park Cost - we paid £39 a night through the travelodge website Very helpful and polite staff And now for the bad points: Room was sweltering hot, windows only open a tiny bit Breakfast was poor, really cheap horrible sausages, bacon looked as though it had been boiled and it was a real challenge to find a clean glass or cutlery Rooms are quite small compared to other Travelodges I have stayed in and they are quite tired looking All in all, its a good choice if you want a bargain break but not if you have to spend any considerable time in your room (we had to return to the hotel quite early as we have a small baby). Apparently, Travelodge are starting on upgrading works next month so hopefully it should improve somewhat.
Clean and comfortable.
My daughter and I stayed at this hotel (now a Travelodge) on a weekend in July. We booked late and were having difficulty finding a room. Having read the reviews I was very leery, but have to say that I was pleasantly suprised. The room we were given was in a little outbuilding by the "waterside". The waterside is a small, not very clean looking pond, a real missed opportunity for the property as it could be lovely if cleaned up. It does seem that the property is in a bit of a transitional stage from Menzies to Travelodge. The room however was very nice. Not fancy, generic hotel decor but very clean, relatively spacious, especially the bathroom. The beds were comfy. I like the white duvets which seemed to be in alot of the hotels in the UK, they don't hide stains like some patterned bedspreads can. Out of desperation we had a late night snack of pizza and garlic cheese bread rolls which we ordered from the bar the night we arrived as we had not had dinner. The pepperoni pizza had one piece of pepperoni on each slice and the garlic cheese bread rolls were so hard they were almost inedible. Our room was at the end of the hallway and around the corner near the emergency exit was an area that staff seemed to use to stash things (dishes removed from rooms, an ironing board, etc.) Our dishes ended up there after being removed from our room. The breakfast that was included in our rate was adequate with the usually buffet of eggs, sausage, etc. The location is good, not central but if you wanted to walk you could. We had a car and it took us only minutes to drive into the central area. We were pleased that the hotel had free parking as parking in town was expensive. The staff at reception was welcoming. The bar was empty except for us and the staff who seemed more interested in conversing amongst themselves than waiting on us. I felt that overall given the price of rooms in Bath, though nothing special, it was a good value.
Small room Big breakfast
Nice hotel close to center of town. We ( 2 adults and an infant) stayed here for 1 night. The room was small according to USA standards, but decent for England. It had a nice balcony overlooking a pond. Breakfast was excellent - huge selection of cold and hot items.
