It’s difficult to know where to start! We were away for a special birthday break mid-week, during the only hot spell I can remember in 2007. It was fantastic.
The hotel has a truly luxurious feel. Our room was great, clean, tea and coffee facilities etc and bathrobes. The lobby area of the hotel has glass cases of lovely expensive things you can buy in Bath, such as jewellery. There is a doorman and porters – in fact lots of staff throughout the hotel who can’t do enough to help.
Breakfast is lovely – very fresh and a wide choice.
The spa has an indoor pool that is long enough to actually swim in and a sort of water tunnel that goes to an outdoor pool which was lovely and warm, and has built in seats with jets of water to massage your back whilst you lie soaking up some sun on your face. There are cruiser-style wooden chairs around the outdoor pool. Inside is an area with a sauna, steam room, ice shower (you have to be brave but it’s worth it!), aroma shower and a strange infra-red room (apparently good for your aches and pains without you getting sweaty as you do in a sauna). I didn’t have any of the treatments, but the staff were very friendly. I did use the gym which is well-equipped and again has helpful staff. There are apples when you leave the spa!
There are two options for eating in the evening and we tried both. The Alfresco restaurant (but it’s inside…) had a relaxed atmosphere with good quality food. The Vellore restaurant was more formal with delicious food – I particularly liked the local artisan bread they bring to the table to slice for you! You won’t need to eat lunch if you’re having the hotel breakfast and a meal there in the evening.
The grounds are very pretty, and it’s only a short walk through a lovely park into Bath where you can spend hours simply waking around looking at the beautiful buildings. If you like running there’s a good route along the canal.
Macdonald hotels have a loyalty point’s scheme, so you can save for a free meal or other rewards.

Soak up the atmosphere and indulge in a mid-week break at the Bath Spa Hotel. Located less than 15 minutes walk from Bath city centre, the Bath Spa Hotel combines top class service with great food and brand new leisure facilities.
Check out their website for current deals - we managed to book a 2 night stay from Monday-Wednesday which included dinner bed and breakfast for a total of £179 per night. Normally £320 per night, this offer was not to be missed and on arrival we were pleasantly surprised to be upgraded to a room with a four-poster bed and fantastic views of the city.
The renovations of the spa and gym areas will be complete in Spring 2006, however until then you can enjoy many of the new facilities including a gym suite with state of the art aerobic machines with built-in TV monitors. Experience hot and cold at the same time with a dip in the outdoor thermal pool where you can enjoy the sensation of a back-massage in its 'waterfall'.
The brand new spa area includes a infra-red sauna for those who don't like the heat of a regular sauna (although one of those is just next door), an invigorating salt infusion room and an energising aroma steam room, beautifully decorated with iridescent tiles and an urn crystal container centre piece. Cool off in the ice room where you can rub yourself down with handfuls of crushed ice and warm yourself back up again by using the 'drench' or 'fragrance' function on their hot shower.
There is plenty to see and do in Bath itself and the hotel's concierge will happily assist by giving you a map and pointing out areas of interest, for example the roman baths, the pump room, Sally Lunn's Bun Shop or they'll direct you to nearby tourist attractions. We ventured out to the Cheddar Gorge where you can tour amazing caves, climb 'Jacob's ladder' and the tower for a bird-eye view of the Somerset countryside.
Bath's a great place to visit because it has something for everyone - historical buildings, numerous cafes and restaurants, lively nightlife and the countryside on it's doorstep. Just make sure you check-out the web first so as not to miss out on affordable offers from it's luxury 5 star spa resorts!

I booked this hotel as a silver wedding treat. it is classified as 5 star and we expected a wonderful experience. The spa is indeed wonderful but the hotel let us down completely. Despite paying cash ( almost £200 for one night) on check in- we werefollowed out of the restaurant after a very disappointing meal, accused of not paying, humiliated in front of other diners and asked to pay £60 When i said we had already paid my word was disputed and we were made to wait for the waiter to go to reception to check. The meal had been pretty awful- a really dry over cooked mean piece of salmoin with no vegetables. in fact any vegetables or salad incurred a supplement so basically £30 for a starter a piece of meat and a desert which by any ones standards is poor value for money. So if you like humiliation and mediocre food by all means eat at this hotel.
