This hotel is very run down. If you are thinking of booking - I strongly recommend you DON'T. The rooms are very badly furnished, uncomfortable and sagging beds, linen and pillows are terrible. The bathrooms are disgusting. The whole place is bug infested, every guest there was badly bitten. There is only 1 restaurant, with mediocre and bland food. There are not watersports, you can't swim on the beach and the beach bar is derelict. Dreadful hotel in an awful location.

i have given this hotel a 1 only because it was the lowest mark available! my friend and i are in our early 30s and we went for a week to "chill out". not only was i chilled out, i was out of my mind with boredom! we expected the following - a choice of restaurants - no. a la carte menu - no. snack bars through the day -no. entertainment on an evening - no. beach bar - no. scuba diving lesson - no. tennis courts - no. aerobics at the pool - no.

we certainly didnt have to fight for a sun lounger, there were no guests! we were told by the staff that the hotel was in the middle of a takeover and that most of the staff had been sacked. this is the reasons that most of the facilities were not available, there was nobody to look after the guests.

the food was not particularly appetising. we had to eat at the same buffet, morning, noon and night. we were promised that the al a carte would open twice that week, and it didnt. we ended up going out into cabarete and spending money we didnt intend to spend, just to get away from the place.

there were no snack bars open through the day, as suggested.

the night entertainment was a joke. it was like watching the end of peter kays phoenix nights.

although aparently there are guestss who come to the same hotel twice a year, and praise its facilities,- we could not see the attraction whatsoever. maybe its because the hotel is in the middle of a takeover - but should new guests not be warned of this? i have to say all in all i felt really let down. its the first time i have flown such a long way and i had really high expectations. oh well - lesson learned. spain next year.

I loved it, It was the greatest holiday of my life. The place was beautiful. It had it's own privet beach, and everything was so spread. Each pool had its own atmosphere, a lively pool, a relaxed pool, and a pool by the beach.

The food was great, they had a beautiful restaurant where you had to book upi, which was included in the price, but most of the time the menu was on offer in the main food hall.

The staff would bend over backwards for you. No request was to much for them to do, they were always polite. The anamation team would get you involved in all teh activities around the pool, there was never a dull moment.

The rooms were clean and fresh. A Maid came in everyday to clean, and always folded my night wear in the shape of a flower on the end of my bed.

You can not fault this hotel or its staff. I would recommend it anybody.

We are from Winnipeg, Canada and stayed at the Paraiso del Sol just east of Cabarete from March 12-26th, 2008. We chose this all inclusive because of the price, Cabarete location and because it offered singles’ rates. Eight of us stayed at this resort, two couples and four singles. It is really hard to find affordable single rates and the Paraiso del Sol offered this. Initially, because of so many poor reviews we had read on this resort, I was very apprehensive but as this was my 7th trip to the Dominican and my boyfriend’s 10th, we knew that you have to take the poor reviews with a grain of salt.

This was a great resort and all of us plan to return to it next year. We have stayed at other Cabarete area resorts (Wyndham Tangerine) and PdelS location was great as it is out of Cabarete so there are no early morning night noises from nearby resorts or bars in town but close enough to take a cab or moped or free shuttle.

The beach is great with miles to walk in either direction. Waves can be big but that is what to expect at times from the ocean……..it is a big, powerful, beautiful ocean and makes you wonder at the power of Mother Nature. Cabarete is a free shuttle or a 50 pesos moped ride away so if you like calm beach then you can go there. The ocean view is great.

The resort was great, staff helpful and friendly and there are three pools that kept us cool - a huge more shallow pool and a nice deep pool closer to the beach as well as another near the restaurant that we didn’t go to.

Our rooms were clean, which is my main concern on any trip. (The women in our group liked the fact that bleach was used on the floors in our rooms and hallways). The single people in our group had rooms with two double beds so they really liked the extra space. Air conditioners help but be advised that the air is turned off during the day as this is a country that does not have services we take for granted here in Canada, like drinkable tap water, great electrical, etc. We were never in our rooms during the day anyway except to change for supper and to sleep. As long as air is circulating, a ceiling fan or air conditioner will do the trick to get the air moving.

No complaints at all about our room, showers, or anything. Pillows were a bit lumpy but after a day in the sun and sand, I could have slept on the floor. No one lost weight on the trip and my compliments go out to the chefs and kitchen workers on this resort who gave us tasty, nutritious meals with local, fresh produce in, I am sure, a non-air-conditioned kitchen prep area. Beets and carrots grow well in the sandy soil and all of us in our group ate fresh chicken at both lunch and supper every day. There is a big taste and texture difference between fresh Dominican poultry/fish versus the frozen chicken that we get here in Canada. The breads were made fresh each day and Swiss meringue is the icing they use on their cakes. The rice pudding is the stovetop kind and was every bit as good as my grandma’s. Chicken, fish, rice and beans and fresh cabbage salad are Dominican staples and are nutritious and good for you. Pork is also fresh and tasty. You will not lose weight unless you choose to eat fresh, juicy pineapple and rice every day.

This is an underdeveloped country that is doing its best to satisfy everyone that comes and visits. It is unfair of tourists to expect the things we take for granted in our countries of origin to be readily available in this country. What is available in the Dominican is: wonderful people, sun and sand, fresh produce and fruit, inexpensive Brugel rum and any other kinds of spirits and beautiful breathtaking scenery. All in our group like to support the Dominicans so would buy beer from a local for ½ or less the price that they would charge at a restaurant or bar run by non-Dominicans. Ice cold Dominican made El Presidente is a great beer!!!

My boyfriend and I always go to the Cabarete area as we have made friends with three local families and have become very close to them. We had the humbling experience to be taken to Miguel’s and Biganos’ homes and offered their most wonderful hospitality this year. The Dominican people are kind and “Please” and “Thank You”, just like at home, are the Magic Words.

One of our close friends is Willy (Wilson) Zapete and his wife, Ingris. Willy runs the Jungle River Tours out of Islabon, about two miles east of the Paraiso del Sol – a quick cab or moped ride. Every two week vacation we make use of Willy and his great staff to enjoy the Islabon and Jessica river boat tour which takes us to the mouth where the Jessica meets the ocean. There we spend time on the beach, have a few coco locos (rum in a fresh coconut) and just chill out or swim. Then Willy brings us back to dock and you can opt in with an extra cost and have Ingris and her friend cook you up the greatest Dominican lunch – sea bass, chicken, salad, rice and beans and fresh crab i.e. we met the crab fisherman on the boat on the Jessica and luckily had a plastic bag to put the freshly caught crab. Willy made a quick call to Ingris to put the water on for the crab and we had crab that doesn’t get much fresher.

Willy also took our group of 8 and 5 others from the resort along with Ingris, little Juan, Willy’s two nieces and two of his helpers for a day long trip to the most fantastic beaches. Other tour groups offer this trip to Playa Grande beach, Diamond Beach but Willy took us to three other beaches that we had never been to. Had a great lunch at Playa Grande and were able to buy Brugel rum hats which are unavailable in Canada. Great, fantastic day with our Canadian and Dominican “family”!!!!!!! Another tour we did was take three children from Miguel’s family on the boat down the rivers to the beach (their first time in a boat) and beach hut. They had a great time and Willy and his staff made sure they felt comfortable and happy. Willy knew their auntie and cousins!!!! The day after we left some others from the resort wanted about a 3 hour shopping spree in one of the towns east of Cabarete so they got Willy to arrange this with beaches and lunch to follow.

For the past seven years, we only do tours with Willy whether it is to beaches, the mouth of the Jessica, Santiago, the waterfalls, etc. as he is a local and we know the money is going to the Dominican people with no middle man. His prices are very reasonable and much lower than others. More importantly, he is absolutely trustworthy and a great diplomat for the Dominican people and the beautiful island. He speaks Spanish but also English and German with a bit of other languages as well. With Willy, you can customize your tour i.e. have lunch and alcohol included; lunch or no lunch, etc. It is best to meet with him to go over it all and then to confirm it. You may need to put a bit of money down and Willy is too honest to every renege on a deal. Once he gets to know you, like us, you pay at the end of the trip unless he needs money upfront to rent the bus, etc.

Willy’s number is 809-667-1960. You can phone from the front lobby phone. Just tell the front desk staff that you want to place a local call and dial 667-1960. Ingris may answer or one of his staff who may not speak English, so just tell them you want a tour and that Gerry and Bonnie told you about it!!!! I don’t believe he is allowed to advertise in the resorts but it is well worth the price and dependability that come with it.

All in all we had a great time and two of the people from our group even bought into one of the time shares on the resort. At Paraiso del Sol, there are NO high pressure tactics like at the Wyndham or other resorts. That was our main reason for not returning to the Wyndham this year.

If you have noisy neighbours like we did for a week from 2 a.m. – 4:30 a.m. (they were young ladies from Winnipeg/Oakbank area) don't hesitate to call front desk at Paraiso del Sol. They had a great response from the front desk when they called about the early morning party noise in their building. I did not call but I don’t think I would hesitate to call in the future as it can get a little loud with slamming doors and talking in the hall. Just know that the staff responded well to C and V’s complaint. Security staff are on the grounds all during the night and are very nice, efficient fellows.

Easter week: We were there during Easter. Well……..…..it was an experience. The resort became so full of city dwellers from Santiago and other areas that wanted/needed a weekend get away. It was a continual party from the time they arrived till the time they left (Thursday night to late Sunday afternoon). Luckily we had a day tour with Willy one day and escaped to a nice bar next door to the Paraiso del Sol for another day – there is a pool there for customers’ use as well. But if crowds, continual noise day and night and aggressive behaviour to Paraiso del Sol staff are not up your alley, avoid Easter week in the Dominican!!!! Our group and many others have decided to plan future trips before or after Easter as it can be quite overwhelming with crowds, noise and attitudes that some of us may not be used to or enjoy.

All of us enjoyed this resort and plan on returning next March. Enjoy your vacation. All the very best…….BB and group from Winnipeg, Canada

this hotel is an absolute crock of s**t.... and thats putting it politely to be honest, its funny really but i went to this hotel a t-totel and came back a fully fledged alcoholic, yes you read right this hotel drives you to drink, not that you can get too drunk because its all wattered down....... but thats one of the more positive sides to this hotel.Dont just think it will be you and your partner sharing your room because you will also have the added joy of sharing it with the cockroach family......

although the weather was beautiful, thats about the only bonus, oh dont expect ever to have a warm shower because you get about 0.3 seconds of hot water, the food is great if your on diet i came back weighing about 4 stone, the choice is rice, rice, more rice, abit more rice, thrown in with a little bit more rice, but if your lucky you may get a few bugs thrown in aswell!!

please listen to my review the hotel is rubbish, the rooms are disgusting if you want a cleaner room than the one you get here i suggest you go and visit your local crack den because i can imagine it to be more hygenic there than at this hotel.....

over all bag of s**t....... go to bogor regis and save your money!!!

For those people that rated this resort poorly, what were you thinking!?? This was my wife's and I first trip to the carribean, and we read a lot of bad reviews about this resort.

We decided to ignore the negatives and went with no expectations at all, and we had a blast! We are 38 yrs old and like to have fun, and fun we had! The room was good and clean, A/C was cold as ice, TV (when watched) had numerous english channels, good water pressure for the shower, etc. We left gum and candies everyday for the room cleaners. They appreciate it, and always make sure you have everthing you need.

The buffet meals were amazing! Great food! You definately won't starve on this resort!

Breakfasts were awesome, omelettes made to your liking, fresh fruit was excellent!

The booze was awesome(cuba libre = rum and coke) el presidente beer was always ice cold! Staff were amazing! Gave many 1-5 $ us dollars for tips, and they treat you like royalty! Resort security was on the grounds 24/7 to make us feel "protected", they were great guys! Especially Maxim, he treated us great! Other staffers that treated us great were Avi, (bartender), and Carlos & "Spaghetti", who were with the Kikos team ( always had a game going on whether it was soccer, water polo, baseball, tennis etc)....great guys! The main pool was cleaned daily and very refreshing, The beach was good, but the red flag was up the whole time we were there ( swimming prohibited) but still many people swimming, lol. After all, this area of DR is known as wind sport capital of the world! We went on a tour to the carribean side of the island to "paradise island" , which is just a sandbar, but was awesome, we went snorkelling, and I'll tell you, it was great! Just like being in a huge aquarium! Cost $45US but well worth it in the scenary alone. Rented scooters in Cabarete- 24hrs for $20US, had a blast! We went all over the place! No helmets doing 70km/hr was cool. Btw, I find that there is no "right of way" when touring around on motorized vehicles, it's more like a game of "chicken" lol! Fun nonetheless! In Cabarete, we stopped at some beach bars/resturants , and the beaches were awesome! Beutiful blue skies/water....breath taking. Beach vendors get a little annoying, but we just said "No, Gracious" and they would be on there way. We were with friends of ours who knew some locals, and we walked around handing out treats to all the "ninos" (kids) who were all very friendly and polite. They really appreciated the hand outs of candies etc. Definatley an eye opener as to how some of the locals live, little tiny shacks, with no running water etc. but yet they seem so friendly and happy!

My wife and I are definately thinking of going back real soon.....we would reccomend this resort!

Ok as long you keep an open mind!

The rooms are very basic, we had to be moved on the first night of our holiday to another room as we complained of a really strong damp smell, and the air conditioning was rattling like a tin can.

The food was average but you get bored of it after a while(Rice, Rice and more Rice) but some of it was really good!

If you like drinking pints of beer like I do, forget it as you get beer in small plastic beakers which is about just under half a pint so order a few at a time!

The pools are nice but could be cleaner.

The beach is very untidy so we only took a couple of walks along the shoreline and that was it for the beach, the sea is quite choppy but to fair to say we knew about this before we went.

The highly recommended thing to while being here is go to ocean world and swim with the dolphins was BRILLIANT! There is also sea lions, tigers and a snorkel reef which is very very good to experience the lovely tropical fish and use your underwater cameras.

I Wouldn't go back but for the money we spent, Not too bad.

If the owners put some TLC into the place if think it would be a very nice place!

Only advice don’t go. Very disappointing holiday me and my partner had two weeks of hell here water cascading down our walls of our bathroom due bad air conditioning. They fumigated the rooms but on number of occasions saw cockroaches and silk weaving giant plate size spiders, one of which was in our room and killed it with my trainer.

Food was very bad survived on bananas for two weeks they carried the food with flies on to the canteen areas. Please don’t go here I am surprise they are still advertising this nightmare hotel it should be closed down.

The toilets block easily to there was raw sewage leaking around the site, there was several reports of the hotel getting a 1 star status 1 ye2 years before after several complaints....don’t go please.

Please please please read this and ignore all the horrible reviews on here!

I booked this as a late deal with my boyfriend and another couple and we had the best holiday ever.

We read a few of these reviews before we left and was really really worried, but they are all wrong some of them are from a year ago and maybe the hotel has improved, I’m not sure but everything was perfect.

The rooms were big had air con and cable TV, not all our channels worked but who wants to watch TV whist in the Caribbean?

I did not see any bugs, rats, cats and I saw only 1 dog on the whole resort.

The food was lovely especially Dominican night with lovely rice and beans with fried chicken!

None of us were ill at all whilst there and the food is kept on hotplates and the salad and cold cheese and meats are kept on frozen plates. They are constantly bringing out freshly cooked dishes and even cook you fresh omelettes or pasta or pizza depending on what night it is.

I understand about the drinks though, it does feel as though they have watered down the alcohol, the only thing that was lovely (and strong) is the Cuba Libra (Dominican rum and coke) or the Santo Domingo Libra (Dominican rum and sprite) or the beer.

The rooms were cleaned daily and towels replaced.

All staff was really friendly as were the locals.

If you grab a taxi and go into the centre of Cabarete which is 5 minutes away and costs 200 pesos (3 pound). It looks a bit scary at first as it can be very busy and lots of people hanging around the street but in the end, my boyfriend was laughing at me because they are all so friendly and it is a completely safe place to be.

The best bar there is called Bambu bar has great music is cheap and you can dance on the beach, for a quite drink there is also Jose O Sheas of course an Irish pub.

The pools in the resort are nice, and the animation team are great loads of activities to do all day.

I personally prefer the beach which was beautiful, the sea is wavy and you can’t really swim in it as such but we had great fun splashing about and jumping in the waves.

It is very clean and the beach sellers don’t bug you, sometimes they just come to say hello (they have to make a living somehow) and they are not rude at all.

There is also a bar and a pool, with a BBQ in the afternoon which is 1 minute from the beach, it’s just perfect.

Also had a full body massage for 500 pesos (7 pound) and it was really really great and a relaxing way to start the week.

We did 1 trip as they can be a bit pricey but you must go on this it’s called Monster Truck Safari, look it up on the internet.

It was the best way to see some of the island and meet the locals, drinks were great food was lovely; we drove through huge rivers and swam in a beautiful river.

We went to a lovely little school where the children run out to see you and wave, if you do go on the this take something for the kids, any toys or old clothes you may have as they really need it and they are so gorgeous, I wanted to take them all home.

You also see where the film Jurassic park was made.

Please make sure you go on this trip it really made our holiday.

Also any questions you have when your there, ask reception as reps are useless.

Well I’m sure I could go on forever saying how great my holiday was but I highly recommend you go and experience it for yourselves!

Katie - March 2007.

What a surprise! We very nearly cancelled our trip after reading some of the reports from other travellers, but we are so glad we kept an open mind.

The hotel is basic, but clean and friendly. The 3 pools were lovely, although the main pool could get crowded and it could take ages to get a drink from the bar. Also I think the hotel allows the local children into the grounds on the weekend, so if you are after some peace and quiet go to one of the other pools.

The rooms were fine, one of our lights didn't work and we had to wait a couple of days to get it fixed, but hey, your in the Caribbean! One little tip is to leave a few peso's for the maid, about 20 a day and it does make a difference. We had fresh tropical flowers in our bathroom everyday.

There weren't any bad points, the food was well cooked and always fresh but you did get a bit bored of it after a week, and don't depend on the Internet availability, it was patchy at best.

The one thing I didn't enjoy about the holiday, and this isn't really the hotel's fault, was the sellers who pestered you constantly on the beach. We tried everything to show we really weren't interested, but they still tried to sell us the over priced tat.

And on a final note - beware of the staff wearing 'Viva Wyndham' t-shirts. Its a time share scam, and boy they are like a dog on a bone, once they got you , they wont let you go.

We asked one of the staff for help getting the free bus tickets into the town and he escorted us straight across the complex to a large room over the pond, (if they take you here, run for your life), here we were asked to give our card details, which I refused, and then we were treated to an hour and a half presentation, even though we repeatedly said we were not interested.

Otherwise, a brilliant value for money holiday in a beautiful country.

6 university students, all single guys. Best holiday I've ever had from what I can remember, which honestly isn't much. Resort was nice and clean, food was so so, but what can you expect from a buffet that sits out in 100% humidity and 30 degree heat. We were warned repeatedly about the locals, but most were super friendly and none of us were uncomfortable stumbling around alone off the resort.

The night clubs in Cabarete were a blast, I love Poland (and apparently they like Canada!) We were almost arrested by the resort police for being loud drunk and stupid, but I guess that’s a good thing for the other people at the resort. There are also guards that patrol the resort beach so you can't try to go swimming at 3 in the morning when you can barely walk.

They only complaint is that they have to stalk more booze at the resort bars, as they seemed to run dry prematurely when we were there. What a trip. We will be back (If they let us.)

This was a wonderful complex, really friendly staff, nice local food, clean accommodation etc.

We had fresh flowers in our room everyday and clean towels, which was thoroughly appreciated after a day in the sea! The beach was lovely but not used much by other visitors, who tended to stay around the pool.

This was the only complaint I have, entertainment was a bit much for us! Overall, excellent value for money, particularly if you take advantage of free taster water sports etc.

Just got back from a two week holiday at the Paraiso Del Sol with my boyfriend and wanted to say how much we enjoyed it. I was a bit nervous after reading some reviews but was pleasantly surprised when we arrived. The hotel is big and quite spread out and set back from the main road. The reception area was really airy and clean and the reception staff seemed pleasant. The rooms are big and clean and were cleaned daily, and also fumigated once a week even though we saw no insects which were good! The only problem we had was with our door lock, when we swiped the card the lock was sticking, but it was fixed straightaway.

The pools were clean, we mainly stayed around the biggest one because it was the centre of any activities, and one of the other pool bars wasn't staffed.

There was plenty of stuff to get involved in, water aerobics, darts, boules etc.

The animation staff were one of the highlights they were really friendly and funny. Every Friday there was a manager’s cocktail party where you met the manager and the rest of the staff.

The food was OK, I am a bit fussy but my boyfriend enjoyed it. They had theme nights but there was always pizza and pasta whatever night it was! The Italian restaurant was nice the food was alot fresher than the buffet restaurant.

We went on some excursions, Paradise Island is amazing (if you can stand the bus ride!) I would recommend that to anyone. We went quad biking and also to Ocean World. With Paradise Island and quad biking we got to stop off at villages and meet the people who live there which was great, it made it more than just a holiday, it was a cultural experience, and you also got to see more of the country which is really beautiful and diverse.

We had an amazing time, and would definitely go back, and to the same hotel.

I was so worried about going after reading all the awful reports- but was very pleasantly surprised. We were welcomed in a friendly way, and all the staff were lovely.

The food was good and varied. The hotel was clean- in fact I have never seen toilets by a pool so clean. All the animation team were friendly and we were always invited to join in- even if we did just want to lay by the pool!

Had we wanted 5* luxury we would booked it. And for the price we got the holiday for it was much better than we had expected.
