The Colony Hotel - A Park Heritage Hotel

It was our second visit to The Colony with my daughter and granddaughters aged 6 and 7. The hotel, room, staff and meals were as superb as the previous year. I did notice that the staff were over-stretched at breakfast and sometimes a table was not immediately available or cleared quickly enough. But the staff were friendly and welcoming and adorable to the children. However, on one evening a function was held until 3a.m and it was impossible to sleep, there was no getting away from the noise anywhere in the hotel. When the function was over there was a lot of scraping of tables being re-arranged for the following day. The staff had to tolerate some very rude and demanding customers. We will return but I am wary of the noise from functions held at the hotel.

Centrally situated in Kyrenia town the colony is a lovely hotel with excellent staff.We were on a half board basis and our comfortable spotlessly clean room was on the third floor.THIS PROVED TO BE A DISASTER!!simply because the Colony holds a quantity of private functions which take place on the roof terrace.so if you enjoy loud disco and dance music until 3 in the morning accompanied with the continual scraping of chairs and tables book a room on the third floor !
The quality of the food on a buffet basis was excellent especially breakfast but catering management seemed unable to serve acceptably hot food on the rooftop terrace and the wind factor does not help.Some additional lighting when dining on the roof would also be beneficial.

This was or first visit to Northern Cyprus and we were delighted with the weather.
The first thing we noticed was the amount of litter and abandoned building materials etc.
The harbour in the resort is very picturesque but is spoiled by too many areas covered with bar and restaurant furniture. When walking out in the evening you run the gauntlet of bars etc touting for business.
There seems to be a two tier charging system in operation when booking excursions and when purchasing goods. There are a few excellent places to visit mainly the castle and Famagusta. Other than that not a lot.
If your ideal holiday is to eat and drink this is ideal but entertainment is low on the ground. I’m afraid it is a no no for me to return.

The hotel public areas were impressive and very clean. the staff very friendly and helpful as befits a five star hotel however the bedrooms do not. The bathroom was of poor quality with a shower curtain around the bath and when the air conditioning was on, the curtain continually attached itself to you which made it uncomfortable to shower.
The toilet in our bathroom took forever for the cistern to fill which was not pleasant when someone else wanted to use the bathroom immediately afterwards. The location of the hotel is excellent if you don't want to drive as you are within walking distance of most of the restaurants and the harbour.
Unfortunately the soundproofing in the hotel is very poor and the proprietors did not seem to consider the general age group of their guests. One evening in particular there was a function which went on till after 1.30 am with very loud music. The sound reverberated all through the hotel.
At breakfast numerous guests were complaining. The hotel seems to be more interested in holding functions rather than its guests. I complained about the noise and was given another room but alas this proved to be just as bad, the noise of furniture being dragged along the floor by the staff preparing the areas for the following day went on into the small hours of the morning.
The noise of people walking about in high heels from above was very annoying especially as we were getting up early the next day to go on excursion. The staff although very attentive always gave their native guests priority over foreigners.
There was very little entertainment in the evenings unless as I have said previously for functions and weddings. The hotel seemed to be taken over by people from the Mainland at the weekends who were very demanding and rude to the staff and always expected to be waited on hand and foot.
This was our first holiday to Northern Cyprus but will be our last.
