Mundial Hotel

After reading one review which mentioned the different expectations of Americans and Europeans regarding room size, I just laughed. I'm American, but I've traveled all over Europe and never had a hotel room which was so small as to be a problem. That was before my stay at the Mundial! In the bathroom, the sink counter actually extended over the toliet, making for an extremely difficult situation; however, once seated the counter did make for a nice book holder. My fiance and myself went to Portugal for a two week holiday the summer of 2004, We started in Lisbon, Hotel Mundial and we stayed there for 4 nights. Before we went I had checked out the reviews on this site, and based on this I wrote an email asking for a room on the upper floors with a nice view. And WHAT a room, and view we got; we stayed in room no. 707 if I remember correctly. make sure the housekeeping staff understand what ´Do Not Disturb´means. My girlfriend was taking a shower while they barged in with their key, EVEN THOUGH the sign was hanging outside. Also, make sure u double check your bill when u checked out as some other guests used my room number to bill their beverages. The hotel doesn´t have the copy of the guests' signature when they asked for the room number where they can double check. READ the bill CAREFULLY. We thought the accomodations were exceptional. Restaurant was excellent and location was in walking distance to many sites as well as easy access to all city transportation. Get the Lisboa card for easy and economical city travel. Mundial's travel attendant was a great help.

Great hotel with great staff! We just spent 11 nights at the Hotel Mundial and had no complaints except we did not have a clock in the room. Our view overlooked the plaza and the fountains and people were neat to watch. The room was large and the window opened, which was a great plus to us. The staff was very helpful and outgoing. The hotel is in easy walking distance to restaurants, shopping, metro, trains, and shopping. We are returning next year and will stay at the Hotel Mundial again.

The location of this hotel was excellent. It is just a 2-minute walk to the Rossio and right next to a string of restuarants. We were in Lisbon for 3 days and stayed one night at the Dom Pedro and another night here and enjoyed both hotels. The Mundial had an excellent breakfast buffet with eggs, bacon, sausage, toast, oatmeal, cereal, fruit, and all sorts of pastries. I just spent two nights here in a triple room with my wife and 14yo son. The staff were helpful, maid service good, the breakfast was a good buffet affair with eggs, bacon, cereal, cheese etc. all one could want. The room was a good size, the location, very good. I did not find it too noisy as another has said and anyway the airconditioner drowned it out. The taxi fare to the hotel from the airport was just over 6 euros, including the baggage charge, 7 with a tip (not expected.) The price was good, and I would stay here again.

We arrived at this large modern imposing hotel over looking a square in central Lisbon during Euro2004. I had booked a double bed (via Hotels) - when arriving we also asked from a room with a view - which we were told that all rooms had excellent views! Found our room (2nd flr) - it had a view of more hotel rooms - and two beds. Went back to reception to try again - this time we got a room on 9th (top) floor with one bed! My husband and I just returned from Lisbon and we were happy with our stay at the Mundial. Our room was clean and much bigger than I expected with two twin beds that were fairly comfortable. The walls are thin but that's typical in Europe. Although the staff speaks English we didn't find them to be overly friendly. The location is terrific and the breakfast was great. Overall I would recommend this hotel.

There is a big difference between what Europeans and Americans expect in the size of their hotel rooms. That said -- my room at the Mundial was extremely small and almost uncomfortably so. But there were some things that made up for this. The view of the castle was fantastic, the service was great and the location, off the bustling town squares of Lisbon was perfect.
