" paradise "

My Husband I went fot 7 days to celebrate my 40th birthday and our wedding anninversay.
We wanted total relaxation/pampering as we have two children which we had left behind.
On arrival we were treated to a refreshing drink and seated whist we were asked to fill out our details. Then we wewre whisked away on a buggy to our accomodation (beach bungalow) however we were given a garden bungalow instead. Initially disappointewd I realised this was wonderful as although the beach bungalows are wonderful you do have people occasional walking past where as in the gardens you really are secluded. Even from your neighbours as the bungalows are set back from one another.
The accomodation was stylish and ample space. With outdoor shower and beautiful bathrooms. Four posted bed and day bed to lounge out in the afternoons.
Food superb. we had half board which is more than enough as breakfast has a hugh variety and certainly sees you through the day.
Although there are several restaurants on the island. I would reccommend half board as each chef comes to the main restaurant each night where they prepare the food in front of you. There is plenty to choose from and it works out cheaper this way.
The beach bar is lovely day or night. we watched each evening the shark and fish below. The staff are very attentive and go unnoticed whilst serving you.
I felt totally spoilt and the spa is just to die for. i visited twice while there and even persuaded my husband to have a treatment.
The weather was warm although we had rain on/off it by no means spoilt the holiday as it was still so warm. Instead we cosied up in the beach bar and lingered over a long lunch and watched the world go by.
Definately going back one day

" Kurumba is pure luxury at its best -... "

Kurumba is pure luxury at its best - the food, service, atmosphere, cleanliness, rooms, beach - we could not fault it. We found a great deal via Lastminute.com who were advertising on behalf of Kuoni, and for the price we paid (very discounted), we assumed there must be some catch.

But there was not, and on asking for a room upgrade, we were allocated a Beachside Bungalow which was fit for a honeymoon, even though my wife and I were simply celebrating my 30th birthday.

The outdoor shower is totally refreshing, and the bathroom has an indoor shower as well as a bath tub, it’s huge! The room has a 4-poster bed, and is well decorated.

The doors open up to a veranda where you can enjoy the morning sun and breakfast/lunch if you stay in your room, and sun beds /umbrella’s are within touching distance right in front of you, as is the sea (further 5 steps), which is so clean you think it is a pool.

Sunbathing and Swimming here is great! There are 9 restaurants and all are superb, you can go to one each night (7 nights) and you will not be disappointed. The sports facilities (tennis, table tennis, volleyball, etc) and spa are also top-notch.

This is why this report is so popular - the vast array of facilities and choice of food available differentiates Kurumba from any other beach holiday, and if you need a lesson in humbleness and good manners, look no further then the staff and management team, they make you feel as though there is no one more important than you.

We cannot wait to return!

" We went to Kurumba on honeymoon in... "

We went to Kurumba on honeymoon in October 2006. It was a fairly last-minute decision and we were not disappointed.

The heavens opened as we came in to land at Male and we had to abort landing and go round again - not an auspicious start!

The speedboat transfer was swift and efficient and our greeting exemplary.

We were allocated a beautiful beach villa at the rear of the island, and this is the best place to be if you prefer a view of sea and islands rather than Male and airport.

I can only reiterate others' views of the fabulous service and superb food. We had a B&B tariff because we like to try all the restaurants in a resort and I think this is the best option if you are having a romantic holiday - the main buffet restaurant is slightly over-lit and echoing in the evening, although it is perfectly acceptable at breakfast.

The grill restaurant is magnificent - especially the lobster. I think I ate lobster four nights in a row!

The Chinese restaurant is very good, as is the Teppanyaki restaurant.

However, the Italian restaurant is the star of the show. Some of the best food that I have eaten anywhere.

With regard to the shopping at Kurumba - the week we left they had opened another shop, near the spa, and this carries just about everything you would need for a holiday: disposable underwater cameras (absolutely essential for snorkelling), films, sun lotion, and batteries - all the stuff you forget or run out of!

Don't miss the champagne sunset cruise - I have some wonderful photos of leaping dolphins under a rainbow! At one point, we were completely surrounded by acrobatic dolphins.

It DID rain for two days (out of 10) on our trip at the end of October - but it's so warm that you don't really mind. We snuggled up with books in the room and dodged the rain to have long lunches in the bar watching the rain sweep over the island.

Quite dramatic, particularly when the seaplanes were trying to land at the airport.

The rest of the time it was hot and sunny with just enough breeze to be pleasant.

The snorkelling in the Maldives is out of this world. I have been to the Red Sea and that was amazing - this is better!

I ran out of superlatives to describe the variety of aquatic life. The colours are utterly psychedelic!

Just go - you won't be sorry!

" We stayed at Kurumba from 21st of... "

We stayed at Kurumba from 21st of September till 28th. We really enjoyed our stay in this resort. We stayed in a deluxe bungalow. Important is that you stay at the right part of the island. When your villa is situated near the harbour or reception the view is not that good. (City of male). The situation near the airport wasn't a problem for us at all, just 3 or 4 planes a day. The prices for drinks and food are not really that expensive ($8 for a cocktail and $4 for a soft drink). The food is very good and you can choose different restaurants. Just a tip, take your snorkelling gear with you! Tell them in advance that it's your honeymoon. You get some nice privileges like a dinner near your bungalow or at the beach. Enjoy your stay!!

" After arriving in Kurumba on a 10... "

After arriving in Kurumba on a 10 minute speedboat trip from the airport we found the check-in to be quick and easy. The bags were at the room before my shoes were off! The main part of the deluxe room was airy with a high ceiling with fan. There was also air conditioning. On the balcony there was a day bed with large cushions and a table and chairs overlooking the white sandy beach with turquoise sea.

The dressing area had coffee/tea making facilities, dressing gowns, fridge, complimentary water (which was frequently restocked), an umbrella for any sudden downpours and a free mini safe which was a decent size. Then through the double doors into the bathroom and a very pleasant surprise -a large bath with middle taps in front of windows which could be fully opened onto an enclosed patio area with tropical plants and an outside shower which was great, even in the rain! There was an inside shower too. The room was very clean and kept clean all week with lovely touches such as orchids on your pillow in the evening.

Although you can stroll round the island in 15 minutes there is a great choice of restaurants including Chinese, Indian, Ocean Grill, Lebanese, Italian, Buffet and Coffee Shop. The meals were of a consistent high standard both in presentation and content. The sea bass was the best I have ever tasted! Approx. cost was $40 per person for dinner including wine.

The beach is lovely and clean and the water warm with good snorkeling on the close by reef. Lots of other water sports are available such as windsurfing, kayaks, banana boats etc. Plenty of sun loungers are available both on the beach and at the lovely main pool, which has shady areas and waterfalls. Beach towels are available in your room.

The evening entertainment is mostly bands in the main bar area and there is a sunset cruise and night fishing. There is a karaoke bar but if you don't want to join in you will not be disturbed as it's in an enclosed room.

There is an amazing, but pricey, spa - facial is $95 - which is close to the well equipped air conditioned gym. Tennis and table tennis is also available.

This island is near the airport, but its not exactly Heathrow! If you want a small island but with plenty of facilities and luxury within reach of civilization then this would be ideal. Look on the hotel website kurumba.com as there is lots of information such as menus and photos. Also take small snacks such as crisps, chocolate bars and raisins with you as well as plenty sun cream as the shop doesn't sell much other than wooden ornaments and postcards.

" We visited the Kurumba hotel for our... "

We visited the Kurumba hotel for our honeymoon and had a wonderful time. The rooms were gorgeous and all within a few steps of the beach. The staff were all very friendly & helpful & the food in all the a la carte & the buffet restaurant were superb.

If we didn’t want to eat in the buffet restaurant on the evening they gave us a discount voucher for the a la carte restaurant of our choice. I would especially recommend the Chinese restaurant. The only draw back with the food & drinks is that they are very expensive.

I would also recommend visiting the spa. We had a complimentary massage as we were on our honeymoon and went back again before we left. Overall I would give this resort 9/10

" Stayed at Kurumba in August 04 to... "

Stayed at Kurumba in August 04 to celebrate our honeymoon and are due to return in September this year. The island if first class offering excellent standard of accommodation around the island.

The food is of a la carte standard, I found bed & breakfast the better option as the restaurants on the island are out of this world, half board option only allows you to eat in the main restaurant, however if you choose to eat in one of the others they do give you a credit voucher towards the final bill.

The pool and surrounding area is spotless and the staff cannot do enough for you. The rooms are of very high standard especially the deluxe bungalows, the rooms are really big and the bathroom is amazing, all face the sea and what a view when the sun sets!! Can’t wait to return.
" Review of Kurumba Maldives (visited... "

Review of Kurumba Maldives (visited 14th-28th February 2005).

Kurumba Maldives is firmly at the five star end of the resort spectrum in the famous chain of 2000 islands. I don’t think Robinson Crusoe would have been so desperate to leave this desert island with its seven international restaurants, beach bar, 24-hour room service, and magnificent spa all surrounded by turquoise water that is the temperature of a cool bath.

A criticism often voiced by those island-hopping tourists we spoke to in the bar was that the resort is too close to the airport and didn’t have that "small island feel." Of course, this was after they had showered off the dust under plentiful hot water, charged their mobiles using the reliable electricity supply, and checked their email from their room or the business centre.

Yes, the resort is close to the airport, but it is far from an airport hotel. I was only aware of perhaps two take-offs/landings per day - a few more on the busy weekend changeover times. Seaplanes are more frequent, but do seem to add something to the glamour of the place. Plus, after a long flight, you can climb aboard the private Kurumba launch where drinks and a cold towel are waiting, smug in the knowledge that your air-conditioned bungalow is only ten minutes boat ride away while some of your frazzled co-travellers have another three hour onward plane journey.

The islands close vicinity to the airport and luxury facilities mean that it is a popular destination for visiting celebrities and heads of state. My holiday coincided with the visit of Bill Clinton and George Bush (Senior) on their tour of areas affected by the tsunami. The rather surreal press conference held in the beach bar where swimming-costumed, cocktail-swigging tourists mingling with the sweating press pack, reiterated the point made by the shop keepers in Male and the waiters in Kurumba – the Maldivians do not want charity, they want people to visit their beautiful country and bring their much needed money. Resort occupancy dropped from 100% to 5% immediately following the wave, and is still only between 25% and 30%. People need to spread the word that the Maldives are open for business.

There are some great offers around to tempt tourist dollars back into the region, meaning that there has never been a better or more important time to go.
