Bandos - Simply amazing!
from Jonathan72
Just got back from Bandos after spending a week on its sunny beaches. Being our first time in the Maldives we were pleasantly surprised by the tiny island. The beaches are fantastic! It is so easy to find a deserted little area for yourself, apart from the Hermit crabs and the fruit bats that is. Snorkelling is fantastic, the water is amazingly clear so make sure you take your water camera each time you go out as you never know what you will see the next time you decide to go for a swim. One tip, do wear a T-Shirt when snorkelling or you will end up with a small patch of sunburn on your back (Trust Me). The food and drink is a little pricey and the 10% service charge just highlights that fact, however, you can charge everything to your room so there is never any need to carry money around the island. Don’t go expecting much night life, the resort tries its best and does provide nightly entertainment but I guess you will find out for yourself. Excursions wise we definitely recommend the full day’s island hopping and the night fishing too. Do the night fishing on a Friday though, as it is followed by a BBQ on Kuda Bandos, the neighbouring island. All-in-all it is a very interesting and entertaining evening. To sum up, a very nice pleasant resort, nice rooms, nice staff, amazing beaches and amazing snorkelling. Enjoy!!
Wish we were back there

It's hard to write a review of this resort. Now I am home i wish i was back there, but while we were there it seemed quite strange. Maybe because I'm not used to going on a package style holiday, I was hit by the way everything was so sanitized and insular. It was almost like being on a movie set of a great holiday resort. You didn't feel anything was real. The island is sprayed twice weekly to keep the mosquitos away (although we did get a few bites), there don't seem to be any harmful insects, any dangerous sharks, or 'outsiders' - people that weren't either staff or resort guests (except when we were there the staff from a huge yacht took over the pool bar). The beaches were white sand, the sunsets beautiful, the water constantly warm and clear, the fish beautiful shapes and amazing colours, the food fantastic, the rooms spotlessly clean. If you are happy to not see any real culture, to only have 4 choices of restaurant (only one if you go half/full board - although you do get at least a 15% discount in the other restaurants), to not have access to any supermarkets (the island has a jeweller, a gift shop with a few clothes and some souvenirs, and sun cream) then it's great. However, my husband said it was like Butlins and i see his point! I haven't been to any other of the Maldives, so I cannot compare, but I imagine to a varying degree they are similar. I only have one real negative thing to say and that's been mentioned before on these reviews, the staff (mainly the waiting staff) were very dour, and although the food was really great, it didn't make the dinning experience a good one. We went with a toddler who really enjoyed it, there is a kids club and a small pool which she loved. Also a small swings and slides area which was pretty crap.
Bandos report

My wife and 4 year old travelled to Bandos 0n 19th Jan returning home yesterday. The island is beautiful and the staff were on the whole excellent-always smiling and very helpful. The facilities were excellent and in this I include the Childrens club where I was able to drop my son for a couple of hours in the morning and same in the afternoon. The food was buffet style and very good. No complaints at all. Suggest you sit in the middle restaurant of the gallery as that is where the food is served. Plenty to do including nightly entertainment. Yes a lot of children were present but so what? The kids all seemed to have a great time.We were in a Junior Suite which was very comfortable-just beware of ants making their way in.If this happens inform reception and the room is sprayed immediately. It works. Bit put off with the 10% service charge added to every thing you buy.You dont need to ever carry money as you can charge the room. Also expected to tip your waiter and room boy. Did not mind this as they were so good! The only thing that really put me off was that large private boats berthed off the island and crew members would come on to the island and take over the pool bar. All in all a very well organised setup and I would not hesitate in recommending people to visit.
not what I expected!!!

Ok, I have read all the lovely reviews, and to be trueful, the place was very nice. Which is why I have rated it above average. So what let it down for me? Well a few things. 1) Everything you buy has 10% added as a service charge, but as the brochure says, tipping is expected! Now I know this sounds stingy, but after paying for the holiday, (half board) we spent another 3000 dollars. With another 10% service charge. (300 dollars tip) then they expect you to tip the waiters, bar staff and the room boy! So what is the service charge for? (would you give 400 -500 dollars in tips??? 2) Diving is very expensive, well not the courses, but all the extras. like the dive computer, the boat, wetsuit, mask ect. oh, and dont forget the extra 10%. to give you an idea, we took wetsuits, mask and snorkel and fins., But because you need a BCD and weights and a regulator, it works out cheaper to take the whole package at 45.00 dollars a day, rather than to hire what you need. then you have to pay 22.00 - 30.00 dollars a day for the boat. So your at 80.00 dollars a day straight away. But the house reef is an excellent dive site. 3) We have only just come back, 23rd Jan. and the place was filled with kids. Don't get me wrong, the place is fabulous for families, lots for the kids to do, a good pool, and a kids club. But I didnt go to the Maldives for a family holiday. If you are after great beaches, beach villas that are actually on the beach, then go to Kuredu. If I was rating bandos on a scale of 1 to 10, it would be a 6, and Kuredu would be a 9-10. However, Kuredu is so popular now, it seems like its fully booked all the time. (im not suprised) plus its all inclusive. Many people who have been to Bandos, ie honeymooners have never travelled to other islands, so they cannot compare.
Great Place and Value for Money

We went to Bandos for our honeymoon. The beach and the reef were amazing. We stayed in the junior suite and found the room to be adequately equipped and very neat and clean. I'd recommend taking only the room and breakfast in the package, if you are particular of what you eat and do not wish to stick to a particular time for your meals. The restaurants serve a large variety of food and it can work our more reasonable. Snorking gear can be hired for USD 5 a day, so don't bother carrying it with you. You can easily shop for mementos at the hotel as it is not more expensive than the airport shops. Glass Bottom boat ride is good for people who do not wish to snorkle too deep (but do snorkle for sure!!)
From previous reviews this was my first choice, and exactly as expected

Bandos Island Resort As an aniversary trip we were upgraded to Beach villa, excellent and thank you very much to the staff at Bandos. Found staff friendly and helpful, at the same time not overbearing as they would become as friendly as you want them. Food wherever we ate good, drinks were not exceptionally high, and took advantage of the happy hour as suggested by a review earlier in the year. As all say, reef is out of this world. Evening entertainment was very professional and varied. Will return again with adding another week at another island.
Bad Servise in Bandos

Bandos is a beutiful island with nice beaches and a good variety of restaurants...but if you rate customer service and friendly attitude from staff members as an important part of your holiday, please think twice before booking.
Resort Fantastic Let Down by Dive school

Resort Paradise, rooms, food and facilities fantastic, be a wonderful place to return too if not let down by unfriendly overpriced dive school, Web site said free house reef diving if bought with package! that was not on offer when arrived, False Lure! Do not like to be conned!!
Great setting, staff made it memorable

The quality of staff on Bandos was excellent - always greeting you with a smile and going out of their way to make your trip perfect. The house reef is excellent for snorkelling and diving - saw turtles and sharks (not aggressive ones!) regularly. The dive school itself was very good with two or three boat dives regularly to other reef sites within half an hour of Bandos. In particular, a trip to Manta Point where you usually see as many as 5 to 10 manta rays with a 4 metre wingspan should be a must for anyone with scuba experience. The room was very clean, although there was an ant infestation in the bathroom each evening - that didn't cause any particular problem to me. The food varies between locations - in my opinion the best value was the Sundowner's Bar. Just off the beach on the west of the island, you can eat with the water almost lapping at your toes, sharks circling the balcony and watching the sunset. Prices here were pretty reasonable, with decent food for as little as $7 on the menu for a main course. I thought the main restaurant was less good value for money - $25 fixed price for dinner, a buffet with quite an eclectic mix of food but not of particularly high quality so that price seemed a bit steep. The Seabreeze Cafe had better quality food but you need to be prepared to wait for longer for it to be served - typically an hour in our experience. All in all, you will find the eating spot to suit you. Enjoy the diving and snorkelling, and take the opportunity to visit Male as it is very close by and more like $6 for dinner (2 courses) and drinks!
the best holiday ever

my boyfriend and i arrived at bandos on the the 7th of november and stayed for a week. from the moment we stepped of the boat, we were greeted with friendly smiles. we had booked a junior suite but after seeing the pictures on the website we asked for an upgrade to a beach villa. this was probably the nicest hotel room i have ever stayed in and im pretty well travelled. the highlight of the room was the outdoor jacuzzi which was fab. the rooms are very spacious and very well equipped. the hotel staff were also very helpful and went out of their way to make your stay the best. the restaurants were also great. we usually had dinner at the sundowners bar and dinner at sea breezes restaurant. they had a mix of cuisine which was great. food was always fresh and served with a smile. we spent everynight at the sandbar. great cocktails and tuesdays and thursdays they have two the the best maldivian bands performing there. the band on the tuesday night was the best i have ever heard. bandos also has many activities on offer and lots of excursions to do as well. the night fishing followed by the bbq on kuda bandos was excellent. bandos also has one of the best house reefs in the maldives. we snorkelled everyday and the marine life in bandos was rich and colourful. i dont have a single complaint about this resort. it exceeded my expectations and i will be returning to bandos in the near future

The carrier was First Choice - we arrived at Gatwick early but a (Thomson) check-in desk was open and quickly processed us. It was cheeky to charge us an extra £40 for the privilege of sitting together! In flight entertainment was crap and, again, a £5 surcharge per... more
