Captains Hotel Reviews
" Not as bad as I thought it would be by reading reviews "
Submitted By: MalmarWe too had water coming in our room, wasn’t sure whether it was from the shower as the shower tray is so shallow that the drain can’t take the water away quickly enough OR the fact that we’d had thunderstorms in the night and the water was coming in through the top of the door, couldn’t see exactly where from but it obviously did it all the time as all the wood around the door was warped from being wet.
The beds weren’t that comfy, but okay, as was the room, basic but clean.
The free bus to St Nicholas beach wasn’t what I was hoping for as it left at 10.30 in the morning and didn’t bring you back until 5.30 so no choice of how long you stayed.
We were unlucky in being held up leaving Gatwick, sat for 2 hours on the plane before leaving, therefore arrived late at the hotel, although we were All Inclusive when we arrived at 5pm there was no food to be had anywhere! We hadn’t eaten lunch so were quite put out, had to buy some crisps and stuff to keep up going until dinner.
The locally produced drinks were okay but all the spirits were only 30% proof, although the bar staff did give you a good measure. Likewise the mixers – Coke, Sprite etc were always flat, so not an enjoyable drink. The wine wasn’t of good quality either.
The staff were all nice, Andreas is sweet, and Dina was lovely, also the staff in the sister hotels.
There were loose railings around, but not loose enough to give way, but could do with fixing.
We walked down into Argassi one evening after eating our dinner, there was a man touting for business in his restaurant – The PALMYRA, remember that name, its on the left hand side just before you get to the bottom of the road – he was so rude, he said about going in to eat dinner but when I said we had just eaten he said – ‘so you have one pair of shoes, it doesn’t mean you can’t have another – open your mind’ all in a threatening manner and then he walked off in a huff!
All in all we enjoyed the holiday but compared to other holidays not so much. If I could have chosen where to be it would have been somewhere in the main street of Argassi, self catering so I could experience the ambience of the Taverna’s. The supermarkets were fine for self catering, had everything you could possibly need.
If you have booked to go, have a lovely time, if you haven’t – think again!
Advice: The beach isn't at all nice. The buses we were told were unreliable.
Activities: The very old Olive tree in a oldy worldy village
" hotel "
Submitted By: jemmagThe worse thing about the hotel was the enterainment, although the Captains has 2 sister hotels, there was only one that had evening entertainment and even that was minimal if there was a show on. We found ourselves going down to the bars every evening (that was only a short walk down the hill).
I feel that the hotel would be ok to go self catering as there were plently of bar/cafes restuarants nearby.
Advice: lovely people and nice bars

Submitted By: irishmickThe room itself was not to living standard, ie the shower when we used the shower the water was leaking through to the bedroom, the bathroom window was sealed and very damp at all times.
The balcony railings were unsafe as part of it was coning away from the wall.
The noise of bikes and cars at all hours was keeping us a wake through the night.
On our 4th night in the early hours an electric cable which was live was blown down and was flapping against a palm tree which was very near the hotel and a private house, no health and safety was in place none of the residances that were staying in the hotel were notifield of the occurrance.

Submitted By: Mrs MB GradyPeaceful location at the top of a hill meant no club noise so great for families or fortysomethings like us.
Argassi was great with usual tourist shops and taxi trips out were really cheap. Had a great day out at Zante town and also Kalamaki beach.
We would definitely go back there without hesitation.

Submitted By: Mr P LANG....WE THOUGHT THE MONEY WE SAVED ON THE HOLIDAY COULD BE SPENT ON BOAT TRIPS AND EXCURSIONS AND KEEPING THE LITTLE ONE HAPPY,WHAT A MISTAKE WE MADE,DON'T GET ME WRONG,THE HOTEL AND POOL WERE SPOTLESSLY CLEAN.AND THE MAIDS WERE ALWAYS CLEANING AND CHANGING BEDDING ETC.THE FIRST THING TO DO IF YOU ARE PLANNING ON STAYING IN THIS RESORT IS TO LEARN POLISH,95% OF PEOPLE AT THE COMPLEX WERE POLES.WHICH IS WHO THEY CATERED FOR.SLOP SLOP AND MORE SLOP.THIS WAS THE MENU THAT DID NOT CHANGE.FOR THE FIRST THREE DAYS OF HOLIDAY WE ATE THIS RUBBISH.AND FINALLY COMPLAINED,ONLY TO BE TOLD WE COULD EAT AT THE POOLSIDE BAR.FANTASTIC IF YOU WANT BURGERS FOR TWO WEEKS.AND NOT SO GOOD AFTER 5PM BECAUSE IT CLOSED.SO FOR 11 NIGHTS OUT OF THE 14 WE HAD TO EAT OUT AT A HUGE EXPENSE.OH AND WHEN DOES ALL INCLUSIVE NOT MEEN ALL INCLUSIVE,TRY GETTING A DRINK FOR YOUR WIFE AND DAUGHTER.NOT A CHANCE,YOU HAVE TO GO INDIVIDUALLY,WHAT A JOKE.STAFF WERE TRYING THERE BEST TO HELP,BUT NONE OF THEM COULD SPEAK ENGLISH.YET SPOKE POLISH FLUENTLY.AND TO BE HONEST THERE IS NOT MUCH TO DO IN ARGASSI.AND ZANTE TOWN WAS COVERED IN GRAFFITI.5 YEARS AGO WE STAYED IN KALAMAKI ABOUT 10KS FROM ARGASSI.AND WE LOVED IT. SO HAVE ALOOK THERE IF YOU WANT TO GO TO ZANTE.....................STAY THERE AGAIN ERM I DONT THINK SO.NOT FOR ENGLISH.........

Submitted By: Mr M Harrisonbut really chilled out, and the staff were great. plenty to do if you like, definately the best of the three sister hotels, quiet and relaxed. the views are stunning from the dining room, go self catering though, because they offer half board at the hotel, which is cheaper than the pre/booked option!!!
the food is good and plentiful, the rooms are basic but clean, the bar stays open 24/7.
couldnt fault the place at all, one of the best places ive ever had the privilage to go to!!!
but if your old or unfit, dont go, the hike will kill you!!!
was superb weather in august, about 36c every day, too hot to do much but drink and be happy!!!!!!!!! result. really nice place but quite noisey at night, due to the mopeds etc........ not that it bothered me much after loads of ale , ha ha !!!!!!!!!
the airport is a nightmare, very small, but still worth it for a great holiday. been to a lot of places in europe, but this was one of my favs!!!!!!!!!!!!
if you want a relaxed holiday without the yobs then this is as good as it gets!!!!!!!!!!!

Nice pool at Captains and also Commodore just down the steps. No kids in pool - great. OK for swimming laps as well as sunbathing. Pool area has good views.
Excellent view from 2nd floor out over resort and right across to Peloponnese. We are young enough to find the steep hill no problem!
Excellent boat trip to Shipwreck - swimming in the caves was awesome - take goggles. Caves are along the cliffs way out from the beach, you must be a good swimmer to reach them. Also one day we walked to Dafni and Banana Beach - roads are quiet enough off season to walk on.
Good bars in Argasi, favourites were Magic mushroom, Apollo and Factory. Quiet season means no waiting to go on karaoke! Also more karaoke means more free shots, especially for the worst singers - me and my brother.
Yes, the restaurant and excursion shop people are pushy, just get used to it, grin and walk past!
Food, drink, taxis etc much cheaper than rip off UK. No need for supermarket (except cereal, tea etc) - eating out is bargain price everywhere.
All flights on time. Both plane journeys fine.
BAD:
Very slippery tiles near pool and cafeteria. Had nasty fall, luckily was the last day and not down the steps!
Awful weather from 20-22 Oct - thunderstorms, cold wind and day temps failed to reach 20C. (Oct is meant to be about 22-23C). Other four days were excellent weather for autumn. Sea temperature was `beautiful` for long swims even on the colder days.
Impossible to get proper maps (for walking) and the free town maps have little detail.
ATMs in Argassi usually broken, otherwise impossible to use in bright sunshine (cant read instructions not that they are understandable anyway).
Laganas is virtually shut in October - brother was disappointed as it’s meant to be a loud night clubbers resort. Also watersports on St Nicholas (Vasilikos) advertised as open but were actually shut for winter. The cycle hire was also shut, and the buses weren’t running (maybe another seasonal problem?)
Zante airport is a dump but I think it’s being upgraded.
ADVICE
Have a plan B for the bad weather days - e.g. walk to Zante Town.
Go in Sept instead of Oct, before everything shuts!
Hire a car unless like us you are OK walking 10 miles a day to neighbouring beaches.
Argasi doesn’t have a proper beach at all.

I would not recommend this resort for a family holiday at or near the end of the season, it may be different mid to high season but i doubt it.
Advice: find out more before you book
