Commodore Hotel Reviews
" I've just come back from a really... "
Submitted By: Miss L Bainbridge
I've just come back from a really great holiday in Zante. I booked it last minute with Thomas Cook and after reading online reviews thought I had made one of the worst decisions of my life!
The late night flight was a nightmare too - mainly because the flight was full of 18-30 holiday goers who were headed for Laganas (thankfully).
On arrival at the Commodore I was bowled over by the amazing view down to the sea and although it is on a hill there is the added advantage that it is quiet.
However there were some problems with my room. I had been charged for a Studio 4 and because there were only 2 of us the receptionist tried to put us in a normal Studio 2!
I wouldn’t have noticed normally and it took some complaining to sort it out. But it was definitely worth it as we got the most amazing room in the hotel overlooking the sea.
The staff are quite unfriendly at times (especially when we were trying to sort out our room) but I could understand it as it is the end of a long season!
I advise anyone who goes to get a car and get out and see what Zante really has to offer. Argassi can seem a little brash but the Commodore is quite and perfect for a relaxing break.
I just wish I was there now!

" We stayed in the Admiral for the last... "
Submitted By: A Moran
We stayed in the Admiral for the last week in May and the first in June but had to comment due to the review given by others on this site. Firstly I will have to say that the staff and accommodation at the Admiral were excellent and we had the same feedback regarding the Commodore from people staying there.
The sister properties are set at the top of the hill so there is not much passing traffic so the main road she spoke about is not heavily used. The bin collections where done at approx. 8.00 am. As for the loutish behaviour of the residents at the Admiral - the residents were mostly families.
Our room was directly on the main road and we had children with us and were never disturbed by noise at night. The resort of Argassi is a small Greek resort so I don’t know what exactly people expected!
The resort was quite as you would expect for that time of the year. The food was excellent especially at The Premier Restaurant and Castaways. I would give the house wines a miss and opt for any Solomans Wine.
Be careful buying clothes as there sizes are about two sizes smaller than they say.
If you are looking for a loud crazy holiday I would go to Laganas as I think Argassi is more for people looking for a relaxing holiday.

" Booked this holiday via the Olympic... "
Submitted By: Miss S Cook
Booked this holiday via the Olympic holiday’s website. The commodore is rated 3.5 stars. We paid £420 in total for 2 people for 2 weeks, self catering. Thought the price was very good.
We flew out from Stansted with Monarch - no delays!
My initial impression of the hotel was favourable, had a nice reception area & the clerk at the desk seemed pleasant.
The first room we were allocated was room 401, which had a double bed, we had to reject this, as my partner has arthritis, so we need the space - & no we are not a couple of old fogeys, I'm only in my 30's!
Room 417 was next, first floor at the end of the corridor, with 2 single beds pushed together. This room also had hairdryer & air con. The downside was it was terribly dark and faced the road, which is VERY NOISY. It also had old style French doors, so no double glazing to keep the noise out!
We asked to be moved to a quieter room, with a nicer view, the next morning. This was done eventually.
We ended up in room 212. This room had a view of one of the commodore's sister hotels - the admiral & the sea. It also had newer style doors, but no air con, no hairdryer no in room safe!
Despite this, we thought the room was probably a bit nicer overall, good view and nice and light.
But that night the noise was horrendous, the bin men come every night around 12 midnight & for some bizarre reason the admiral seems to attract people who have no consideration for others - loutish yobs, screaming shouting singing as they return to their rooms between 1am - 6am.
Other the room seemed to have double glazing, there was about a 1-2 inch gap around the frame, which we eventually stuffed with newspaper to try to give some kind of soundproofing.
The rooms are quite small and basic, but kept very clean and tidy. The hotel has some great plus points:
1. Terrific views - especially from the Captains restaurant area (another sister hotel)
2. Great food at the Captains - All you can eat buffet for just 8 Euros adults / 4 Euros kids, good choice and good quality.
3. Commodore staff very nice.
Minus points:
1. Noisy - but that is due to the kind of people the area and the Admiral hotel attracts. We didn't have too many yobs in the Commodore, but it was definitely a different story over the road.
2. Rooms basic and not maintained very well - although clean
3. On a Steep hill, lots of steps in and around hotel.
If you want peace and quiet this hotel is not for you, although if you ask for a room on the top floor with a pool view, you might be ok. That's what we tried for, but fully booked.
The resort of Argassi was a bit tacky for our liking, but if you head out of the resort to St Nicks beach or Vasilikos to explore you won't be disappointed. Though if you take the bus, beware, does not always return to same stop for return journey home.
We were stranded with about 10 others, when bus decided to do its drop off about a mile down the road and as this was the last bus at 3pm, we had no choice but to get a cab, costing 13 Euros.
Avoid Rossi's Bar in Argassi - went for a quiz night, supposed to start at 9.30, started eventually at 10.15 and they charged you to enter the Quiz! Also as in most European resorts I've been to the restaurateurs are very pushy trying to get you to eat in their place.
One place I would not eat at again was Double restaurant - awful and beware all these Greek restaurants charge a cover fee, between 80c and 1 euro just for serving you - that's per head.
Hints:
Took a day trip to Kefalonia - too long, started at 7.20am, and got back to resort at 8pm. Great Island, but terribly long day.

Staff in the hotel were also slow and reluctant to serve you. I did not find them helpful, however there was one occasion when staff booked a taxi for us, which we were impressed with as we were not expecting them to even provide us with a number never mind book the taxi.
Positives about the hotel were that there was the use of three pools plus the children's pool. Plenty of sun loungers. Evening meals were eaten at the Captains hotel and were nice, they varied the main meals daily however kept some things the same eg salad items. Desserts were basically the same every day however. (Please be aware that to get to the Captains you either have to walk up a hill or lots of steps, so this would not be recommended for any person with mobility difficulties). Breakfasts were eaten and the commodore and were also nice but repetative. Entertainment at the Admiral Hotel on a daily basis eg greek nights, live music and discos which could be accessed. Maids also visited the room on a daily basis and made the beds. Not sure how often thet change the bedding and towels.
Argassi was nice. A quiet resort but you can easily access the other areas, eg Zante town for some shopping, or Laganas (lively resort for nightlife lots of restaurants etc). You can hire a car, quad bike or scooter easily, cheapest is a scooter 15 euros per day we paid. You can also travel by a fun train to Zante town, bus, or horse and carriage. The hotel was 10-15 minutes walk to Argassi beach which was good, however we did not use this beach as it was not great, but ok for sun bathing etc, just not as good as the other beaches on the island. Recommend St Nikolas, Tsilivi, or Laganas beach, they were a lot better.
Weather was great for the week - up to 42 degrees - very hot. The locals stated they were worried about how hot it was going to be in August considering this is only just the beginning of Summer - just to warn you incase you're planning a holiday then.
There are plenty of places to eat in Argassi, with a wide range of selection - Greek, British, Chinese, Italian etc. Didn't see any Indian restaurants. Plenty of little shops and pubs as well.
THINGS TO DO
- Cruise around the Island day trip - go to see a ship wreck, swimming, lots of caves etc. This was good but we got a bit bored sitting on a boat all day, depends what you like.
- Glass bottom boat trip to Caretta Caretta to see the turtles. We didn't get time to do this but wish we had as apparently it is fantastic and the turtles are the size of coffee tables.
- Greek nights - dancing, plate smashing etc.
- 2 day trip to athens
- trip to Olympia (home of the olympics)
- mini golf
- day trip to St Nikolas beach, which is a lot better than Argassi beach. You can get a free bus daily from outside Pelargos Tours shop at 10.30am. It costs 4 euros each for a sun bed when you get there. Beach is nice and there are pleanty of watersports to keep you entertained for the day. Bus returns at 5pm. There is nothing else to do in the area however apart from the beach, a small shop, watersports and a beach bar/cafe, so be prepared to relax for the day.
- horse riding - I absolutely loved this. You can do either one or two hours with Nana's Horses. I did two hours and went galloping on the beach. My boyfriend did not like it as he was a beginner and had never even sat on a horse before. He was led by a greek man who did not speak any english at all and therefore could not give him any instruction. Therefore I would only recommend this to those who have at least had some horse riding experience in the past. It is catered to your ability and you do not have to gallop etc if you do not want to, the ride splits at a certain point. 20 euros for one hour or 35 euros for two.
- I would recommend hiring a quad bike or scooter to travel around the island, visit other beaches etc. There are some amazing views.
- Laganas night out - very lively, was a good night out. Very much the 18 to 30 type scene however so depends if you like this. A street full of bars and clubs.
- Water Village (Water Park) This was ok, but better for children rather than adults I would say. The children's section looked great, plenty of slides, fountains, sprinklers etc. There was a lazy river, two pools and big slides as well. But depends how much of a thrill seeker you are as to whether it will meet your standards. I only enjoyed one of the slides, which is the newest one. Apparantly they are buliding new ones as well though which are supposed to only be for adults, so the park could be better then. Didn't see rapids or a wave pool etc either, which might have livened it up a little. There are plenty of sunbeds again. 18 euros for adults. I think it was 14 for children. There is a free bus to the water village from outside Pelargos Tours.
Overall the holiday was lovely, but the accommodation and staff attitudes were very poor. I would recommend a trip to Zante, but I definately recommend that you do not stay in this hotel and I would not stay there again
