Very Pleasant
from TravelNow_WorkLater
Stayed here in Nov 2004. The hotel has a very good location and is on a pleasant square, the staff were always helpful & friendly. Room was small but clean & warm and as Venice is so wonderful you will not want to spend time in your room. I would recommend the hotel and would certainly stay at this hotel again.
Great Hotel; Great Location
from A TripAdvisor Member
Just spent three nights here. Great hotel. Quaint, simple and friendly. Location is fantastic. 5 mins from Rialto Bridge/Grand Canal and 5 mins from St Mark's Square. Typically Venitican. Breakfast was simple but good. Be aware accomdation is typically up three steep flights of stairs. No lift in place for the "unfit". If you want mod cons and elevators don't go to Venice! Would go back tomorrow. We would highly recommended this hotel.
Pleasantly Surprised

I ended up getting the Hotel Scandinavia through Priceline and after reading the reviews here I thought I was going to be sick. The hotel is in an ideal location for seeing the sights of Venice (5min walk to San Marco Piazza). The lobby is small but clean and easy on the eyes. The room was showing its age but very clean. The front desk staff was very friendly and helpful. We were in Venice during the month of January and the heater kept the room very toasty. My biggest complaint would be noise. We had a room on the second floor and there was a narrow walkway that echoed up into our room. The bed was comfortable; the heater worked great, plenty of hot water and pressure. Every place I've stayed at through priceline made you pay for the breakfast, not here. Free Continental Breakfast. You have to remember this is considered a 3 star hotel..
Nightmare in Venice
from A TripAdvisor Member
It may be unfair for me to actually review this hotel since I only set foot inside the hotel lobby. However, this statement in and of itself is significant because, despite the fact that we had a reservation confirmation from Orbitz, the hotel had no record of our reservation when we arrived there. What's worse is that they were completely unapologetic about it. Only after we caused a scene and my friend threatened to sleep in the lobby did they find us another hotel. It was particularly horrible because Venice was in the middle of its annual film festival AND the annual Regatta, so we were extremely fortunate to secure another hotel room at all. We ended up staying at a place that was not on a piazza and that was actually technically closed until the following summer...so there were no other guests, no breakfast, and almost no one at the front desk until it came time to collect the payment for the room. However, we feel extremely lucky that they were kind enough to open their place to us...otherwise we would have been in a bind. It is still unclear to me whether this mistake was Orbitz's or the Hotel Scandinavia's, but since I did have a confirmation from Orbitz and I have never had a problem using them before, I have to believe that the fault lies with the hotel. A word to the wise - if planning your trip through Orbitz, Expedia, etc...be sure to double check that the actual hotel received your reservation. It would have made life a whole lot easier for us.

We stayed at the Scandinavia on the Campo St. Maria Formosa on our first night in Italy. It was small by American standards and the furnishings were a bit tired, but it was clean, comfortable, and quiet. The front desk staff was very helpful and it was an easy walk to the major sights. The campo is a charming place with a nice coffee/gelato shop next door. The hotel's continental breakfast was very good. I'd stay there again.
A Horrific Dump...
from Marita0522
I have just gotten back from Venice, I had reserved two days at the Hotel Scandinavia. As I approached the hotel, which was in a dreary not so nice part of town, I was not impressed by what I saw on the outside of the hotel. The hotel is in Costello NOT San Marco (San Marco is where all the main attractions are) - the Hotel is a good 30 minute walk to San Marco. Upon entering the hotel which was a rundown dump inside, I checked in at the front desk and was told that there was no elevator and that I would be placed on the 4th floor. I lugged my lugguge up the stairs (which was not easy) and entered the room. The maid was still cleaning the room when I entered. On the nightstand was a can of RAID (for cockaroaches) and the room was just awful - cramped, rundown and unclean. I immediately left the hotel, I could not stay here with the thought that as soon as the lights went out that there would be cockaroaches crawling around. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT STAY HERE... IT IS TRULY AN AWFUL PLACE.
Authentic Venice Hotel

This is an excellent hotel. It is situated in santa maria formosa, which is a large and rambling square flanked by handsome palaces and the Santa Maria Formosa Church. The market square is one of the most characteristic campi of venice. The family run hotel staff are very friendly and helpful - the room had views of the market square It had an old venetian chandelier and venetian mirrors, giving a genuine venetian palace feel. The rooms were clean and well sized, with air conditioning and heating, cable TV, bathroom facilities and comfortable furnishings. Breakfast can be taken in the market square outside the hotel. The hotel is 5mins from San Marco and 5mins from Rialto, perfect location! - Dont miss out on this little gem of a hotel.
freezing cold
from Susie77
I booked this hotel for a special occasion in Oct 03. The main problem with this hotel was that it was very cold. I asked about heating and was told that there was no heating until November. I tried to get warmed up by having a shower but there was no hot water at 9am. They advertised that they have a mini bar but they do not have one. I asked and was advised that there is a coke machine in the hallway. They advertise that there is 24 hour room service but they do not serve any drinks or food in the evening. I asked for an iron and they could not provide one. In short it is not a four star hotel but a 0 star hotel and is not worth the money. On the plus side the location is excellent.
Happy on the Campo!

Not on the Grand Canal, Hotel Scandinavia is well placed equally distanced from Piazza San Marco and the Rialto Bridge-both only a 5-10 minute walk. Located on Campo Santa Maria Formosa (a plaza) it enjoys a friendly atmosphere with a vegetable fruit seller outside the front door, a gelateria across the plaza, a bar next door and open sky above. My wife and I enjoyed our stay March 3-11, 2004 with a nice room, bath and good continental breakfast. The staff was very friendly. Our room didn't have much of a view, but we were not there to stay in a hotel room but to see Venice.
great value
from A TripAdvisor Member
thought this hotel was great value for money. the staff were very helpful. rooms basic but clean and the location was excellent. would comment on the directions though from a prev report. We found it within ten minutes from the stop at St marks square. if people bought a map before leaving home and prepared themselves then they would have no problems. It was so easy to find! its not london where you would jump into a taxi and demand to be dropped off at your hotel hey this is venice!!

What a great long weekend. Venice, if you haven't been there, it is definitely worth a visit!Take your best walking shoes and go for it and a credit card with lots to spend. Ryanair is fine as long as you are able and do not expect any special comforts. It is a great cheap... more
