Not a 4 star hotel
from shadower360
We got there after a nightmare flight that stranded us in Dallas and connected us to france then lisbon then to Faro. We drove according to the directions givin and was hopelessly lost until I chanced it with the Portugese that I learned with the Pimsluer system I had purchased. Finaly found it and wasnt dissatisfied with the hotel. We checked in and the staff was great. We got to our room and dropped off our stuff. The two twin beds that constituded the queen were without any box spring at all. It was amaizingly uncomfortable. We went to the hotels kitchen to get some late dinner and it was a buffet. We grabbed some plates and went up to the buffet and there were merely scraps left and the cook had turned off the kitchen I guess and wasnt making anymore food. It was the worst buffet I had ever been to with soggy roast beef and undercooked potatos. The charge for sub-standard Army chow that we were fed was 35 Euros (thats $43.00). The location is so nice and the grounds of the hotel are beautiful. It is in a perfect location for the beach and close to the town of Lagos. It could use a hottub instead of a turkish bath, but not to bad........ I was extreamly alergic to something in the room and I don't have alergies of any sort so I had a awful time of it in the room. So shower time rolls around and bam no hot water. I try to call the front desk and bam the phone doesnt work. We try and find our luggage that was late from the plane and bam I cant call out. This was a really interesting trip. All in all the hotel wasnt bad....it wasnt as great as it was advertised however. I Stayed at the 4 seasons in Arizona, which is a 4 star and I had to ask for nothing. This is not a 4 star by any means. Expect a 2 1/2 star at best.
Great new year getaway
from A TripAdvisor Member
My partner and I were unwilling to spend our New Year in London and due to cheap flights, decided the Algarve was calling our name. And oh what a fab time we had. We stayed for five nights in the Luz Bay Club Hotel, which is undoubtedly one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in. With immaculate facilities, comfortable rooms and joyful staff it was such a recommendable break. This hotel also boats villas and apartments, situated 5 minutes away. The surrounding town of Luz was impeccable with great entertainment. Lagos is also a near drive away, which is more suited to youngsters with it's vast array of clubs (every type imaginable!!) All staff are trained to the highest standard and do not hesitate to help, which is much appreciated by my partner and I. This is a very recommended break and i will inevitably be returning in the summer months.
Excellent Location
from KayTopping
We stayed 7 nights at this Hotel and had a perfect week. We were given a family sized room for the 2 of us. The resort is quiet, with a choice of some excellent restaurants. We tried most of them, and didn't have one bad meal! We hired a car to explore the local area, and loved Lagos. We went there one evening by Taxi which cost 7 eoro's each way. The pools were cold, but then so was every other one we stayed in. No problem with Sunbeds. Breakfast ok, no fresh fruit and juice was not drinkable, and same served day in day out.The onlyimprovement i would make is to put tea/ coffee facilities in the room. Building works were not a problem at all, but it may depend where your apartment is located!
A very relaxing and peaceful place
from Sprog1
We are a couple in our 30's who have just returned from a very relaxing week at Luz Bay Club Hotel 24th Sept 2005. We would highly recommend this hotel, very clean, friendly staff, welcoming bar - (Paulo makes great cocktails..), 3 pools - which I might add were a touch on the frosty side.. The grounds and gardens were immaculately looked after. And only a short walk to a fab beach and promenade. Having read previous reviews we weren't sure what to expect with regards to the building site next door. But to reiterate what others have said, the noise was minimal and very much in the background. We had some lovely meals out in Luz including the Atlantic beside the old church, Fortulesa at the far end of the promenade (in old fort), Concha on the beach. We would certainly return to this hotel and area in the future, September seems a perfect time to go, it's not too busy, not too hot, and there were plenty of sun beds available every day.
Great holiday
from A TripAdvisor Member
Recently stayed at this hotel and had a lovely quiet time. The building of the hotel next door was no trouble or bother. The staff all spoke good english and were helpful and courteous at all times. The rooms were fresh, clean and spacious with a satellite t.v that showed BBC1 and BBC News 24 (useful for my husband to catch up with the ashes!) There were 3 good size pools, although you will need to bag your sunbed early! Breakfast had a good variety and was kept well stocked. Luz is a lovely village with plenty of choice for restaurants, although it is advisable to book a table, especially at the weekends (make sure you try out Godots). Luz is slightly more expensive than nearby Lagos with the sunbeds on the beach pretty expensive. Overall a great a holiday and would not hestitate to use this hotel again.
Just got back.................
from trolleydolly
Just arrived back from Luz. We had a great time and are already planning our next trip. We didnt stay in the Luz Bay Club Hotel , we stayed in a Luz Bay Villa , but we had use of all the facilties of the hotel. Ignore those negative reports about the building site and noise. Yes they are building apartments next to the hotel and yes they are using cranes, but the noise is kept to a minimum and the building is not related directly to the hotel . We used the pool facilties and were not disturbed at all. The hotel is very clean and the staff friendly. The only minor downside was the lack of sunbeds around the pools. People were very selfish and 'bagged' their sunbed with a towel and then went of to do other things. The hotel should adopt a policy of removing these unused towels. Luz is a lovely little village , not yet spoilt by tourism. It has a beautiful , safe beach, awarded with a blue flag. The sea is crystal clear and for those of you that have only visited the med in the past few years, it will come as a surprise to know that you can still swim and snorkel without getting an ear infection! There are a couple of very nice restuarants, try the 'Conche' on the sea front. They do very good steaks and the house red is to be recommended. The Bull Pub ( like an english pub from the 1950's) is immaculate. The food is homemade and great quality. You could eat of the floor here , it is so clean. The staff are very welcoming. The Resturant Fortulesa should be given a miss, especially if you like to eat before midnight. The service is appalling ( we went twice to double check and it didnt get any better) Chaplins is also to be avoided if you have children that like to eat without waiting for ages. The food here is good but the wait was too long. The Atlantic next door is a much better choice and you will need to book. Don't bother with the local taxis, whilst there are plenty at night , they are few and far between during the day. Portugals main roads and motorways are straight, clearly signposted and very easy to use. Hire a car ( we did and drove abroad for the first time in 30 years) try Sergio at Budget rent a car phone him on 282 76 41 12 and negoitate a rate. We got a A class Mercedes for the price of a Corsa and 4 days for the price of 3. Once you have your wheels , go up to Bergau (5 mins away ) don't try driving to the front unless you want to get stuck in the narrow cobbled streets of this lovely vilaage. Park at the top of the main street and walk. Have lunch at the BeachBar . Spend an afternoon here enjoying a bottle of wine an some of the best fish you have ever tasted. Another place to eat is Dom Sebastion in Lagos old town. Book the terrace for a special evening meal. By now you should be able to tackle a longer drive , so do try Monchique in the mountains. This spa town is just like Portmerion with the sun. The end of the world , past Sagres is an absolute must. You cannot go any further west in Europe. The cliffs here are fantastic , but not for the faint hearted. If you are interested in bird watching then here is for you. We visited far too many hideaway coves to mention, but do be adventurous and drive along the coastal paths, you will find bays to die for. Our two weeks went far too quickly and we are already planning our next trip to this lovely area.
Great place, shame about the surroundings
from SteveLeicestershire
This hotel is very nice. It's immaculately clean and the service is good. The hotel bars are amongst the cheapest in the resort which is good for a 4 star hotel. The rooms are well equipped and although not heated, the three outdoor pools were very clean and, in July, the water temerature was acceptable. The gardens are beautifully kept and the open areas in the interior of the complex are very welcoming. It's a shame that there is so much building work going on around the hotel. The noise is more background and wasn't nearly as bad as we expected when we read other reviews (it's moved farther away), but the skyline is dominated by cranes and unfinished concrete shells. Having said all this we really enjoyed our stay, there is a stunning beach within 5 mins walk with a nice promenade with an 'old' feel to it. We would actually go back there but perhaps in a years time when things are finished. Good news is that, despite all the building in the area, no-one tries so sell you anything! how refreshing! They are building in lots of parts of the Algarve and this isn't too bad, if you can get as good a deal as we did it's well worth going.
Spotless and relaxing
from kevhenderson
We booked before reading the 'building site' review and having read the review approached our holiday with some trepidation. However, we were very pleasantly surprised. There is a building site next door, but it causes absolutely no inconvenience and it certainly did not spoil our holiday. The room that we had was lovely, spotlessly clean and well appointed. The staff were very friendly and the grounds were immaculate. We would return again without hesitation. The beach is five minutes walk from the hotel.
Scortched by the pool!!
from A TripAdvisor Member
Went to this hotel in Mar 2005, although there was some building work going on in the locality the only disruption caused to us was by the barking guard dogs. During the day the noise was minimal and roads around the village were very quiet. The hotel was very clean, had a sauna, turkish bath and indoor pool (for a small charge 7.5 Euros). The staff were helpful and curtious. There was little nightlight life to speak of and the hotel bar shuts early! The other holiday makers create no noise at all - all in bed for 9:30 (SAGA holidays!) The hotel provides a minibus service to lagos 3 times a day, but unfortunately it is only open to over 50s - the rest of us will have to walk. Bewarned the outside pool is not heated as stated and grab the sunloungers early before others!
Building site!!!
from angel4
Me and my wife stayed at this hotel atracted by the description of it and by the fact that is located at a village out of the busy areas. Unfortunately, no one told us of the fact that this unit is located just by a building site with more inconvenients that one can imagine. Definitely not the place to go in the next three or four years.
Thought hotel was clean, quiet and friendly. Breakfast was a bit repetitive but plenty of choice. Perfect location for the village and beach, only 20mins from Lagos by taxi. Did not have to get down to pool early to reserve a sun bed as always available. Would stay there... more
