We have just returned from Marrakech staying at the tichka salam. Our room was OK the view was of fenced off scrubland and building work was going on opposite our room and boy do they start early. The communal areas of the hotel are well kept and the bar is absolutely lovely ,really cosy and if you stick to beer or wine/soft drinks quite cheap. i really love the spicy olives and nuts that come with your drinks. We found the staff to be friendly and welcoming but not at all obtrusive. For the price you pay here you really can't complain about the bedrooms plus you get your sheets changed daily. People should remember that they are in Africa and not Europe 4 star accomodation but even so the facilities fit internaional 4 star criteria and you only get what you pay for so for the travellers who are whining about the Salam being 2 star charading as a 4 star i would suggest that maybe they should pay a little more and stay somewhere else because this hotel is a positive bargain..
Poor Maintenance & Bad Service

Please do not go by the Photographs & the like .. this is a 2 star property parading as 4 star.. Rooms were very badly kept.. dirty.. overused and generally unwelcoming. Staff can also put you off.. when we complained about the room AC not working the guy at the reception actually said ' we do not put the AC on in October.. you can sleep with your windows open' .. we even heard.. "consider yourself lucky that you are in marrkech????" Breakfast was adequate but served by staff who were listless and generally unhelpful...
Pretty good

Hit lucky with a room upgrade to a suite. Very nice room as such. Food average at best. Staff friendly but not fantastic. Out of town but we were just overnighting so not a problem.
Agree, just ok

The hotel has some charm in that they have tried to copy the Riad style and the outside pool area is pleasant and informal and a nice place to eat. The pool staff are friendly but as per other people's comments there can be a shortage of sun beds although the guys will do their best to find you one. Other than these positive comments the friendliness of the waiters is hit and miss and the reception/concierge staff are on the whole rude and unhelpful. We tried a couple of times one night to get them to reserve a restaurant table and got no where, equally we had been booked on a day trip and decided to return to this hotel after being in the mountains just to do the trip only to find it cancelled! - when we booked the concierge did not explain that it would be cancelled if we were the only guests. The acoustics in this hotel are also poor with maids starting early and noise traveling fast. Was glad we did not pay brochure prices - used lowcostbeds.com.
Give it a miss if you want friendly service

We got placed in this hotel by the Kenzi across the way that had overbooked. This is in no way a five star hotel, with rude staff and dirty, outdated rooms. When i fell ill, my girlfirend enquired what medicine they had available (as in their room leaflet) - to be told none. When she enquired if she could take some croissants from breakfast for me (which we paid for) she was told no by the general manager. When we asked for a later check out we were told no (again their leaflet suggested that they would try to accommodate us) with no explanation or comment. They lacked enough deck chairs for more than 30 people around the pool (the hotel has 138 rooms) and their staff were looking for tips for even locking a bag in a room . We had to ask for pillow cases to cover their disgusting pillows, there was dust everywhere in the room (and a disgusting old airconditioning unit), with fittings that had not been replaced since the day the hotel opened (probably 30 years ago). The only redeeming features were a very nice (and cold) pool, that it was quiet , and a nice breakfast...Not enought to make me recommend a long stay here.
Peaceful and elegant at the city limit
from Sillstryparn
We had not planned to stay at this hotel at all, we ended up there after a nightmarish late evening chase for the riad we had booked in the medina. We felt very welcome and got a large room in traditional moorish style. Our five nights there we remember with joy, despite the unusal bad weather; good service, good breakfeast, lovely garden. Ok, the location is far out from the medina (on the other side, a petit taxi there does not cost much), but we also learned to appreciate the new city with its restaurants and shops - which are within walking distance. One of the best restaurants in Marrakech was just some blocks away, for example. And after spending a day in the chaotic medina, it was quite refreshing to go back there and get away from all the noise.
Peaceful, Ryad like hotel for less money
from Rime
We have just returned from a week at Tichka Salam. I loved it, it's totally designed like a Riad or one of the Medina's old houses. it's great for someone who was looking to stay at a Riad but couldn't afford it. Service is very good, friendly atmosphere. You don't have to give tips if you don't have enough money, it doesn't really make a difference. however, the towels are little old and they only give you two big ones and two small. I like nice towels, my husband didn't even notice this. You can bring some extra towels with you. The pool area is very nice, towels and chairs are available all the time. The food is very good, nice breakfast and lunch. This hotel is far away from the old Medina. You can take taxis. The one thing I hated was the taxi drivers who are stationed outside the hotel, it's always the same gang, and the same faces, they are the worst people to deal with in Marrakech, they wait in front of the hotel for tourists only, and they refuse to take anyone else. They are lazy SOB, nosy as hell, and they are always looking for a big spender, or people who shop from the bazars, they seem like phony tour guide driving thoses cabs. One day we just wanted to go to Gueliz, a 5 Dirham ride which is .50 cents USD, but the driver wanted to convince us to go to some Bazzar. I had to promise him $2, just to drop us off where we wanted to go. Any how, If you have any problems with any of them take the number of the Taxi and get help from the concierge.

Lovely hotel, lovely people, breakfast was as much as you can eat buffet. Had a really good time, it was nice to be away from centre, taxis are really CHEAP!
lovely peaceful hotel

We have just returned from 5 days in Marrakech staying at the Tichka Salam and found it exceeded expectations. The room was well furnished and a good size with the top sheet on the bed folded to form a flower on the turn back and a large bowl of fruit + large bottle of water all included. The check in was very quick with us just completing cards. They didn't want passports or credit card details. The breakfast buffet was excellent and only once a little frantic with food running out. We did not have dinner in the main restaurant but ate in their Moroccan restaurant one evening where the food and entertainment were good and included a young belly dancer. the hotel staff were all very friendly. they mainly spoke in French but managed English when needed. I only wish that my French had been better. The large outdoor pool was heated and we enjoyed a quick dip one afternoon. Best advice given to us was to set a price you are willing to pay then work that out in local currency and don't go above that when buying. Also knowing what taxis should be charging was helpful as they may try to overcharge if you don't arrange a price before getting in.
Just OK

Terrible location. Hotel is OK but upstairs need redecorating. Bathroom floor looked as though it hadn't been washed for months. Very good breakfast. Staff were very polite and helpful. Beware they ALL expect tips. Takes at least 45 mins to walk to the centre and the hassle you get from the men is unbelievable. Taxis to centre is at least £1.50 each way. I would recommend staying closer to the main centre, I'm sure there are places there to stay that would be alot better.

We changed our booking to the tichka salam after reading reviews of our previous choice, and were really glad we did. The staff, from cleaners to concierge, were more than friendly and helpful. The breakfasts were consistently good no matter what time we went down and, on... more
